Would this same method of wrapping around the stone work with different shapes? I only have teardrops and ovals.

Yes, for the teardrop, bend the wire into a v first, position that at the point of the teardrop, then carefully take the wire around, bending it with pliers when you get to the point of the stone. With an oval, just try and follow the shape of the stone, the wire will want to make a circle, so you have to shape it with your fingers as you go around. To wrap shapes like this can be a bit fiddly but it is possible 👍
