Guys, that's not Sign Language, that's Fingerspelling!

Exactly. The other gloves aren't any better. You can't emulate sign language with just gloves.

Wouldn't it be cheaper and easier to just write on a pad? Even better would be to carry a touch screen tablet with Dragon Speak. The hearing impaired person could write or type text on the pad (which can speak the text), and the hearing person can simply speak, which in turn creates text on the screen for the user.

They don't like to be called hearing impaired. Dragon Speakeasy isn't that easy. It takes several times to translate, since we all speak differently and different accents. It doesn't work like that, nor does it work that way with sign language.

Please make two interactive gloves, including R-hand/L-hand dominate option for clarity, and make a simple vocabulary list for real signing, (particularly American Sign Language as that's ASL's manual alphabet you're using). Unfortunately Non-Manual Signals (necessary for understanding ASL grammar) cannot be registered by the gloves, so non-signers will have to figure it out.

I don't think it will work. They've done so many tests on them with ASL students. They don't work nor do they translate well.

Its a good idea but it has a long way to go. Its like google translate it will get close but no replacement. I would say it is a good study tool for ASL 1 and 2 so far thats all.

Could an app be developed that used the smartphone's video camera to track finger position and spell letters? Then again, why not just use a keyboard? Could deciphering whole words work?

A camera would be unpredictable. Low light, different angles and other factors would influence it. But idk maybe it would work?

How bout converting animal language such as cat language into human language? Why has this channel stopped uploading. It has some pretty cool inventions.

While this is interesting and an amazing invention it is a misnomer to call it a "sign language translator." Fingerspelling is one aspect of a complete and multifaceted language. this essentially is no more than a glorified written note as it still requires the user to have english be the source language of their message: e.g. no actual translation at all.

Sign language is its own language. It can translate into any language in the same way that french can be translated into any language. If you're really asking whether or not ASL is universal, it is not. Many countries around the world have their own sign language that the deaf there have developed. As to your last question, I don't have any idea why any gang member would be any more confused by sign language as anyone else.
