Around the 04:00 mark: Because the ligaments of the shoulder and elbow are already under immense strain at 100-105 MPH. Adding any more speed would likely tear ligaments and result in career-threatening injuries. The rest of the video is a bunch of footage of a dude in a lab trying to hit fastballs.

also, there is a point where you have to use the same amount of energy released in the 100mph throw, to even move it another 1 mph. The real limiting factor becomes the density of the ball and air resitance. try throwing a ping pong ball as far as you can, itll take twice the amount of effort just to get it another 4 feet

Just think how rare a pitcher like Nolan Ryan was back in those days throwing 100 mph when know one was. Must have been crazy for batters seeing that for the first time. I'm sure studying his mechanics helped others achieve better speed on their fast balls. Nolan is the G.O.A.T.
@caseydrucker2 жыл бұрын
Watch the documentary "Fastball". When Ryan was throwing 100, they were measuring pitch speed as it crossed the plate, as opposed to now, where they measure at the point of release. They had a physics professor run the numbers and it's likely he was throwing 110 if you measured at the point of release.

As a baseball pitch and a pretty successful batter i can tell you that a batter being able to hit a ball isn't just about the brain, it involves instinct and muscle memory while your brain makes that last second decision on whether to swing or not. That's why coach's always tell you to think strike then decide later because if you wait for your decision the ball is already past you, it takes years of practice to become really good batter. the key is timing then making that last second adjustment based on the spin of the baseball. (and of course mechanics)

I watched the game when Aroldis Chapman threw that 105mph fastball. The announcers were gushing about it, but failed to mention that it was a foot outside and two feet high. His catcher had to jump up awkwardly to get it. I'd like to know how many of those 1,000+ fastballs at 100+mph in 2017 were strikes and how many of them were balls.
@jackson51166 жыл бұрын
The more they see a pitcher, the more intricate things they pick up. Gwynn was one of the earliest guys who revealed how they studied pitchers back in the 80's, and why he won so many batting titles back then. He used to use VHS tapes of the pitchers to study their motion, their release point, how the balls moved, etc, and it paid off, he won multiple batting titles.

Ur wrong, Nolan Ryan threw a 109 mph fastball. In the 9th inning with 154 pitches, a freak of nature
@CapAnson123456 жыл бұрын
The fastest pitcher of all time was almost certainly Steve Dalkowski, an early 60s minor leaguer who was thought to throw about 110. Nolan Ryan later in his career could touch 100 mph. Early in his career looking at video he was NOTICABLY faster. 105-plus and possibly closer to 110. But it's tough to really know for pitchers pre-1980. Feller, Koufax, Walter Johnson, guys like that probably topped out at 95. But usually lived in the low 90s to save on wear and tear. What made Ryan unique was how long and how many innings he could throw at those speeds.
@Mike-ib9tg2 жыл бұрын
They did the math Johnson was said to throw 93-95. Bob was said to throw 105. And Ryan 107. So Steve was said to throw faster them them all. Also good to note johnson was a side arm pitcher, typically side arms throw slower.
@mannynunez93612 жыл бұрын
Thing about Johnson is he could throw another 5 to 8 mph faster but his fastball would straighten out and he would get rocked so while he could have been a career 100mph pitcher it would have been short and unsuccessful. Now Ryan was rare in that he could throw as fast as he could possibly throw and his fastball still had movement never straightening out like most pitchers
@mannynunez93612 жыл бұрын
Oh and by the way Sid Finch a short time minor leaguer slash beer distribution salesman according to Sports Illustrated in the 80's was known for throwing 115 mph he just didn't want to i guess look it up.

@LazlosPlane3 жыл бұрын
Robin Roberts said, "You could go up there with a howitzer, a good fastball hitter is going to hit your fastball." What made Feller, Koufax, etc, so effective was the complemented the fastball with a really good curveball. So if, as a batter, you're "Looking," for one, you'll NEVER hit the other. And you HAVE to be looking for the fastball.

He said the trick was timing the release of the pushing leg with the elbow and wrist of the throwing arm and when you release the knee to pinch your but cheeks to give stability to your torso. I'm telling you this guy was insane. He had a very short career because he broke his arm throwing 3x, but dang-he had the mechanics down!

The biggest mistake in this is the batter reaction times. Yes, a batter has great reaction time, but baseball is a game of chess. The batter is trying to figure out what pitch is coming next, where is going to be. He'll begin his swing BEFORE the pitch is thrown, and hope he made the correct decision.

@ThatBlockyMan3 ай бұрын
It’s been five years so I don’t reckon you’ll see this but for others who do, this is a common misconception. Hitters can certainly guess what’s coming, but a baseball isn’t large enough to hit by pure chance. Hitters start the swing motion during the pitcher’s motion (watch clips, you’ll see they shift their weight back, this movement is called “loading up”). After the pitch is released the bat begins to come around. Then, based on their read of the ball, they either drive the bat through the ball or hold it back. This is why you sometimes hear the saying, “every pitch is either a swing or an aborted swing.” Alternatively, as any good coach will drill into your skull, “it’s a strike until it’s not.” After all, if batters just guessed, breaking balls would be pointless. Pitchers would just throw fastballs and changeups because those are easiest to control.

I think in 10-15 years it will be 108-109mph and average speed will be 100-104. Batters won’t be able to hit anymore there will be a lot of walks and strikeouts. Baseball will have to change in some way, like the elimination of the mound. If the mound was eliminated the velocity of the ball would drop drastically. Hitters now are having s big issue with hitting 93-97mph and it is showing in the strikeout stats in 2018.
@StaySqueezy126 жыл бұрын
akaredcrossbow I doubt it. The great thing about baseball is, their isnt as much change over the years in it as in other sports. NFL, NHL, NBA players of the 60s most likely couldn't compete in the modern leagues. Thats probably not the case for baseball. The skill sets required for baseball dont rely as much on genetics and superior athleticism but more so on skill.

My friend once had a friend with an MLB pitcher. I was a varsity at Badminton at the time and was competing at sports events. It was my first time playing baseball and the pitcher wanted to test how good I was at swinging. My friend said the guy was a almost a 3 digit pitcher dude (sorry I forgot his name). So we just wanted to see how well I'd do as a batter, and myghad it was one of the proudest moments of my life. I hit all of his 15 shots and 3 were homeruns. Not bad for a rookie imo. The thing is I didnt know how to swing properly but I did have very good reflexes, in all honesty the ball moved slower than how a shuttle moves in badminton imo
@vaderdarth47583 жыл бұрын
Forgot to mention ...it's the same concept as a slow speed pitch being hit by a really powerful batter. The faster the velocity of the batter along with minimal impact being absorbed (meaning the batter is very strong and doesn't give at all when contact with the ball is made) has the same effect. More energy is just being injected by the batter in this case rather than the pitcher.
@imbangmaynn57053 жыл бұрын
@@vaderdarth4758 Yes I understand that rule. Even in Badminton that's used. The stronger the smash of the opponent the less force u have to use to deflect it back because the energy is returned, to the point that if the smash is strong enough u can literally just put ur racket where it's going to hit and it's going to rally without any effort. I was more shocked at how the ball was moving tho, like it was slower than a Badminton shuttle normally moves. That's why the shots weren't that hard to hit.
