LOL! And if some kid get out in front of him, he would also be more likely to hit that than a car going the same speed (even if the car of course, is a lot worse for the kid, IF it hits). His starting acceleration during a race (the initial push) is very fast (even compared to car standards), but he can't stop or turn very fast (stopping distance is probably about the same as the acceleration distance would be, if he started by just standing upright, without the foot steps and the normal stating position - maybe even worse, because the shape of the body makes it easier to accelerate than decelerate when running). High speed turning is probably the worst, since that has to be done with very little contact with the ground all the way (during deceleration, he can at least increase the deceleration rate, as the speed get down and he get more contact with the ground)

To increase ground reaction a primary aspect that is often ignored is the increase created by a good arm action. Try standing on a set of scales and aggressively bringing your arms up. Note the effect on the scales. Also note how the change of arm motion at the end of its swing can reduce your body weight thus aiding flight. Research into this aspect of sprinting is too often neglected when compared with reaction times, leg power, cadence etc. In addition the arms counteract the eccentric thrust that is created by leg forces not being applied directly to the central line of the body. So wider hips and narrow shoulders do not encourage efficient application of power when sprinting. A rotating body core caused by eccentric thrust not being counteracted by the arm action reduces muscle efficiency in all limb muscles connected to it. So reducing 100m times depends on leg and arm actions plus all the other factors. Certainly it can go lower than it currently is.

I'm not sure under 9 seconds is impossible, partly because many used to say that Bob Beamon's long jump record would never be broken. It was broken in just over 20 years. There was speculation for a while that Bolt, if he applied himself enough, got even faster, had the perfect race, possibly at altitude with thinner air, and ran to his absolute best, might stand a chance of going under 9. BUT....there has to be a time that going below is impossible... For example, a human could never run the 100 meters in 2 seconds of course... So would love to know the absolute definitive answer on this.

Saying "This record will never be broken" is usually just meant as praise of an extraordinary performance. However: if said in earnest, it is essentially accusing the record holder of cheating. Obviously, if one person can do it, then eventually another will be born who can too. A 9 second 100m dash is not the same though. They aren't anywhere even remotely close to that... most athletes have a potential of 9.8 or so, some extreme outliers are down to 9.7 or 9.6... but even Bolt never did 9.5.

I find it a bit odd that they didn't factor height / stride length. I contend that a reason why Bolt is so remarkable in sprinting is his height. Bolt is the tallest Olympiad winner in the 100m ever at 6 feet 5 inches. The second tallest was 6 feet 2 inches (Carl Lewis). The fact that Bolt maintained a high turnover rate being that tall is astonishing and is a huge factor in his speed. Bolt ran the 100m sprint with an avg of 41 strides. That's about 2.439m per stride or 96 inches. If you could increase your stride length by form or just by extension of your height (such as the case with Bolt), over the course of a 100m race you could shave off 1 less stride. In a 100m sprint, 1 less stride to the finish line is a HUGE advantage. During my sprint training days I was told that starts, RPMs and stride length were the holy trinity in speed.
@theshermantanker70432 жыл бұрын
It's not just stride length, how fast muscle can contract also plays a role, too slow and your feet would've left the ground before your tremendously powerful leg muscles ever managed to apply full force to the ground
@s0mthinisf1shy68 Жыл бұрын
Su bingtian is a good example on how to maximise on block start phases and that less strides is not necessarily good during first 60 meters
@jzkakkd1426 Жыл бұрын
that's bs, the stride length doesn't count at all; if it did every 4 legged animal would be slower than us considering their less stride length. If we could manage to move our legs faster, the more steps we can do means more force that pushes us and the faster we get.

If Bolt had ever run a perfect race, just within the allowable tailwind, he'd have been down to 9.40.

Equinoxx They make you have a burst of energy so they speed you up but I’m not sure about size.

Jack Summers they do give you size over time regardless of training

JC No, I think steroids are like illegal energy drinks. Because why would the Russians drug all the runners if they decreased stamina?

50 years ago, no one thought 100m in 9.58 secs was possible. Same goes for now 100m in 9 sec, now.

Its a matter of force to weight ratio for the human body. If, in the future we come up with even better ways to train our bodies to be even stronger than we are now at the same body weight, then yeah of course. That guy is just basing his estimate on the limits based on the 5x ratio he's seen.

Einstein proved that time is relative so if we just got out the audience in a spaceship and propelled them at 50% the speed of light, it could be possible for the runner to make it in under 9 seconds relative to the audience. The only problem is that it is impossible to get an audience to move that fast.
@aighty72166 жыл бұрын
Lol it's easy. We just have to move our legs faster XD
