A little rough math: about 10 people a year go to space. We'll say half of them for the first time. So 5 new people a year get to go to space. 53 players win a Superbowl every year. Not only is it harder to get to space than to win the Superbowl, it's about ten times harder. You've gotta be good, but you also have to have an insane amount of luck.

That is in part because of them, only Chris Hatfield went to space on more than one type of rocket. All of the others only launched into space on the Space Shuttle. Hatfield has launched into space on both the Space Shuttle and a Russian Soyuz.

Because you’re only selected to be an astronaut if you’re cool and chill! Most people get pissed off pretty quickly spending time locked up with others in a small space 24/7, so astronauts must be very sociable, empathetic, laid-back, compassionate, and very stress-tolerant.
