there are a lot of good survivalists out there, but most of them are quiet reserved hunting guides, fisherman, and a lot are just loners that like to be alone in the woods. not many people like that actually like to talk to a camera and be a public figure. most survivalists that you see in the popular media are just adrenaline/danger junkies with a camera that are basically filming a long format red-bull stunt. Les is one of the few that is both a good survivalist and a good filmmaker/public figure.

For anyone who is driving in winter, even in the city, or out of city limits, dress like you're going to walk. My dad's best advice. Also, a story. Was driving a rental car after my car was totaled in an accident. Got a flat on highway 20 between grass valley and highway 80, it is complete wilderness. It rained then snowed hard and got dark. Roads entirely frozen. Jacked up the car and went to change the tire. Lug nuts had security locks on them, and no key to be found. Tow truck almost couldn’t make it to me do to thick ice on roads, took about 4-5 hours to make it out. He was going to turn around, but decided to keep going one more mile when he found me. This is basically in the middle of the forest, no civilization for many many miles. Temperature was probably like 10 degrees F. The lesson I learned was that 3 standard flares are not enough. I now carry a backup set of LED ones. Imagine if I hadn’t had the sense to put my kit into the rental car! If you are taking a rental car, bring your kit!!

To be honest it annoys me how much and how many people underestimate cars in a survival situation.I have seen some survival movies where their car breaks down and they just leave it. Looking at the thing itself, it’s a shelter you don’t have to build and I think a pretty good one because they often have cushions, good for sleeping, it’s also fairly strong and have usually some indirect insulation. Also you drive on the road, meaning you will have it beside the road, obviously people pass by the road and could help. Also you can just fit lots of stuff inside.

My car holds heat like crazy and we dont have working A/C right now so our trips are miserable but I keep a gallon of water in the car at all times. What I keep it in changes. That water has been more than useful. The types of snacks, meds, etc that I keep change too. Most meds expire or dont function properly if stored for a few days or more above 90°. So I become far more reliant on peroxide and gauze, and peppermint tea or ginger ale sodas. Fortunately I havnt had any emergencies but ive avoided several by being prepared.

It feels like there's something gnawing at your life force, assuming that your life force is centred in your legs (which, being a skier, didn't feel all that far off). Also, maybe goes without saying, but Taurius is, as far as I'm aware, *not* representative of most people's physiology. Three weeks is the traditional time limit; I don't know what the survival rate is for eleven days further but I don't think it'd be high. So, buying an off the shelf kit can be a good start and other than buying the most expensive one people who are starting don’t always know what’s good and what’s not. To me you may as well buy a kit and then just use what’s in it as you learn and gain the skills to use the tools. Then you can find what you like and don’t and be able to make better choices so you can put your own kit together. One thing to consider is also that some off the shelf kits come with a really nice case. Might be worth buying the kit for the case when you get your own kit together.

I grew up around hunting, but was too rebellious to want to partake. Les Stroud introduced me to the idea of just wanting to be out in the woods. I didn't want to hunt, but for some reason, as a young teen, I wanted to spend a whole weekend out in the woods. I never went that far, but I started to spend a lot of time outside, looking for hidden spots that get overlooked. Steve Rinella, combined my love of the outdoors with hunting and my love of wildlife. These two guys collectively have created another branch of morally sound hunters and/or supporters of nature, that will continue on for decades. If I have a son, I'll let him make his decisions, but not without trying to instill the love of natute that Stroud and Rinella instilled in me.

Great info. I have a question: I understand that in a survival situation, you can't be a picky eater; if all available is rotten meat you just have to eat it. But first, is there a way to "process" it to make it safer? Cause rotten meat indeed has bacteria that can kill you. Second, eating rotten things, at least for me, will get me food poisoning (I've experienced that more than once). Won't that make my situation worse? So, a related question: what to do in a survival situation if you have diarrhea?
