How to Build a Custom Jon Boat Casting Deck

Most aluminum jon boats come as a stripped down shell. This provides a prime opportunity to customize these light and versatile boats for specific uses such as bass fishing, duck hunting or a little of everything.
A front casting deck is a fast and easy way to greatly enhance the fishability of jon boats. It provides the angler a raised platform for better visibility, casting accuracy, and quietness. Our buddy Wayne walks through how to template and scribe a 3/4’’ piece of treated plywood to fit perfectly in the front of our Lund 1436L jon boat (wired2.fish/Lund1436L).

Love the saw horses. My first job as an apprentice carpenter back in the 70s (local 1622) was building 26 saw horses lol. Great job on the template tips. I put one strong back under and across the center of my 3/4" deck because it felt a little spongy with two of us on it.

Nice video! Hope you won't mind if I ask a question. I just bought an Alumacraft 1436LT, and I don't think it's stable enough for me to routinely stand and walk around on a raised deck while fishing. However, I'd like to raise the front factory metal shelf so it's flush with the top of the gunwales. Do you have a video or maybe photos of how you made and attached the raised shelf at the front of your boat? That would be a big help in getting my boat ready for the spring fishing season. Thanks!

Good video. I can hardly wait to watch hoe you install the carpet etc. Are you planning to put ant foam sheets under it for added flotation like many has done? How did you find the right place to put the front at to make sure the deck was level after you put the boat in the water? or did you already figure that out and if so how?

Hi Coy, we didn't need stringer support given the narrow width of the boat and rigidity of the 3/4-inch plywood.

Just in case someone at the hardware store says get plyform plywood for building a deck like me, do not. It separated after one rain.
