I just discovered this video today. It is a year after this was originally published; it is not a common practice for me to comment on post that have been around for a while but this time I must! This is yet another outstanding video created by you folks @Wired2Fish! I love the content and production of this video; really great stuff! What I enjoyed even more was Ryan's presentation of the information. Great job Ryan! Now, I need to get out there and give this a try! Sorry this comes so late, but thanks again @Wired2Fish!

Hi Jay, appreciate the comment. I personally started fishing swinging jigs around 5 years ago and it's been fun experimenting with new plastic pairings. Paddle tail swimbaits have been excellent. Have a good one - Ryan

@@Wired2Fish thanks for your comment and the tip! I haven't experimented with paddle tails on a jig much, mostly craws and beavers; now that will change! Thank you Ryan!

Good deal Zac, let us know how you end up. The swinging jig thing is kind of like Neko rigging - you can experiment with a bunch of different plastics and keep learning new and better ways to catch fish. Have a good one - Ryan.

Very impressive, can't wait to try this technique! In trying to guess necessary weight for depth you were fishing, I'm guessing you were using either the 1/2oz. or the 3/4. Would u mind sharing that info to help gauge? I may be "bottom bugging" for smallies in 18 - 25 feet, also using straight 15# FC. I'm guessing sparse (weed) cover is ok for this technique, but the fairly solid weed beds would not lend itself to this style.
@Wired2Fish
@Wired2Fish 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Bruce, thanks for the comment. I was using the 3/4-ounce in this video which I use exclusively in water > 10' deep. Please give this video a watch for what I feel is the ultimate deep-water swinging jig (kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5zOn3R8pKdnfKc). Although the Tokyo Rig is not technically a swinging jig, you'll be amazed by your ability to maintain bottom contact with a 3/4 - or 1-ounce tungsten dropper weight. Yeah, a little grass is fine but you'll start fighting it when you flirt with full-fledged weed beds. -Ryan

This was the 3/4oz. I use it about 90% of the time in order to get deep quickly and keep the bait near the bottom during the retrieve. I'll go lighter in shallow water or when a slow retrieve speed and light head are required for tentative fish. -Ryan

What size hook do you use for 3.5 to 5 inch swimbaits ?
@Wired2Fish
@Wired2Fish 5 жыл бұрын
Hey #Outdoors in Minnesota. The biggest one I can get away that still fits the particular bait. Typically a 3/0 for a 3'.5' bait and a 4 or 5/0 for a 5'' swimbait. In this video, a 5/0 was right for the 4'' Spark Shad being used.

Very versatile. I go slower with a baby brush hog with good results. Post and pre spawn female stagging bait... Thankfully I don't need thousands of dollars of electronics but I could see how it would be helpful in water you're not familiar with. Thanks guys

Will this work for bank fishing?
@Wired2Fish
@Wired2Fish 7 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! It's a good way to locate and target fish on rough patches of gravel or rock no matter what you're casting from. Since it's rigged weedless you don't have to worry about the occasional grass patch either but this bait really shines when it's kicking up the bottom and bashing off of things.

I rig up cheapo heavy splitshot versions in case I can't walk off a snag, like if I'm fishing a rocky river where you wedge your bait between bigger rocks a lot more often.

Should be doable with a hook size upgrade. The Mustad Fastach Football Weight ranges from 1/4 - 1 ounce in weight and allows you to attach whatever hook you prefer (same function as a swinging jig): goo.gl/oXyqjX
