It's always a blast and learning experience spending an afternoon in the boat chasing bass with Shaw Grigsby, especially in his home state of Florida. Given all the grass in Florida, a Texas-rigged worm was the first bass lure he mastered, and he's continued to evolve how he uses it. In this video, Grigsby gives us an excellent tutorial on how he swims worms and excellent tips to increase your hookup ratio.
TACKLE USED
• WORM - Strike King Cut R Worm, 7-inch: wired2.fish/3ljnmkj
• HOOK - Lazer TroKar MagWorm Hook 5/0: wired2.fish/3Njl3tl
• WEIGHT - Eagle Claw Pro Series Lead Worm Weight: wired2.fish/EagleClawProWormWe...
• ROD - Team Lews Pro-Ti Speed Stick Casting Rod: wired2.fish/LewsProTiCastingRod
• REEL - Team Lews Pro-Ti SLP casting Reel: wired2.fish/Lews-Pro-Ti-SLP-S...
• LINE - Seaguar AbrazX Fluorocarbon Line: wired2.fish/SeaguarAbrazX
A Texas rig is the ultimate in versatility, allowing you to fish fast or slow, horizontally and vertically. For these reasons, it plays excellently for covering water, then killing the bait when you come across a hole in the grass or bass bed. However, a common problem with Texas-rigging worms is having the bait slide down the shank and bunch up around the hook on a hook set - this prevents hook penetration. Grigsby shares a couple of excellent rigging tips to curb this problem and lead to more catching.
Lastly, he discusses the importance of rod angle when retrieving the bait and giving the bass a little time before setting the hook. He shares his typical rod, reel, and line setup for swimming worms anywhere in the country when bass are shallow and relating to grass.

I subscribed @1:24 into it when I read the comment ….”Hickok45”…… It helped watching this man work a rig so naturally that it makes it come to life. All while explaining it in a such a manner that I felt that I can do this or I’m at least a bit wiser than before. Hope it can now live up to the extremely high expectations that I’m hoping for……….

It's great finding him here on KZbin - I grew up watching Shaw and the other legends catch fish, but over the years fishing shows became few and far between, until nowadays when you need to order an Outdoor Channel just to see em. Finding Shaw, Jimmy Houston, Roland Martin, and Bill Dance is like seeing uncles you've missed for years.

I went out to the local river this past weekend on a Saturday. Everyone was fishing top water, spinners, whopper ploppers because of the flooding and all the grass that's grown. One guy had one bite in an hour. Meanwhile I ended up with 24 bass in 3 hours thanks to your video, 5 inch super salt brown finesse worm showed em all up. Fishing it slow def helped, a few times I went to rig up another pole after a cast and found myself with a fish on the end a minute later.

My number 1 lure last year was a 10” Berkeley tequila sunrise power worm with a 1/4 oz weight with a 5/0 mustard power lock. My number 2 lure was a Mann’s baby 1 minus lemon shad with red hooks. (I changed the hooks) My number 3 lure was a chompers 4” black/blue fleck tube craw with no weight and a 3/0 mustard power lock. There were others but these 3 lures caught most of the bass I caught in Minnesota last year. If you fish Minnesota these might be worth a try. Good luck out there 🎣

Shaw great tips. One question, when you use the toothpick to peg the worm so it does not slide down the hook shank. Are you pushing the toothpick through the eye of the hook buried in the head of the worm or just through the body of the worm near the top or at the bend of the hook?

I just figured out my current dilemma. Up in Northern Wisconsin we are in a sever drought. Lakes are down 3 feet or so. My lake is spring fed but it is busy trying to feeds 26 other lakes and is down at least 18 to 20 inches. Weeds are thicker than I have ever seen them. Weeds are matting on top in areas never before seen. Squarebills & Chatter Baits are not working this year. Some success with Whopper Ploppers in some open surface. I will try this method tomorrow. I got too close to the trees to see the forest.
