It's a one time thing. Once you pair your phone with CarPlay it'll recognise your device automatically without you even having to take out your phone from the bag or pocket.

I am confused as to what input is using the Aux cable? Is the Audio for music coming through the Aux or the Fiber Optic.

The aux connection ensures the audio signal between the head unit and MMI. The fiber optic is just a way of passing through information, instead of using electricity and wires, in some applications optic cables are used. If the fiber optic cable is wrongly plugged you will have not only audio issues but also no time displayed in iDrive menu and no Bluetooth connection.

The MMI doesn’t override any OEM functions, you will still be able to use the camera and parking sensors.

Hello, to be able to answer your first question we will need your car’s VIN number, as it depends on the used architecture. Unfortunately, you can only use one audio source in all BMWs, and as long as MMi uses a different signal than MMI - we cannot change BMW architecture, but you can force your phone to act as a speaker which tells you the directions in this situation.

If anyone reading this can answer that would be great as looking to purchase. 1. My BMW factory installed MIC will still work? 2. If I am listening to music through CarPlay and I want Waze on the screen can I? Will it leave th emusic playing whilst Waze is on the screen? I can also control the Waze voice volume on the iPhone so as not to have it booming over my music? 3. If I am playing music through CarPlay and I need to switch over to the original iDrive interafce does that then disconnect CarPlay and the music stops? 4. I have the original USB in the arm rest, however the iDrive does not allow music to be played trough it, only charge. Would that USB be able to be the new main USB to charge and play music connect through USB to the iDrive after install or would I have a seperate ned USB somewhere? Or can th eold USB stay as charge only and the new USB be the main one? 5. DO all phone calls now coen through CarPlay? Not the original BMW bluetooth in car setup? 6. Will I be able to go back to my original DAB radio if I don't want to play them through CarPlay? 7. If my wife was to play music connected through the USB off her phone would I be able to connect via wifi to use Waze on my phone? I guess not but worth asking as long journeys with family would be perfect as I get all the free data and she has all the music ha. But in general, our CarPlay MMI Prime and the native iDrive system are separate. You can easily switch between the two, and the CarPlay side supports all the standard CarPlay functions to move between apps. But it isn't possible to use CarPlay and iDrive features simultaneously, for example

Our MMI prime uses AUX sound source, so you can turn on the radio but then you won't hear anything from CarPlay.

Hi. I have 12/2015 BMW F20 M135i with 8.8 inch headunit from factory that I believe runs on NBT / NBT Evo ID 4. Do I need to upgrade a headunit in order to install MMI Prime? My goal is to have apple car play working. Also if my car already comes with a rear camera, should I select "no camera" option when ordering? Thanks!

Why does it appear so laggy? Does it really have that much of a low frame rate?

Hi! That's actually just a filming issue. We were getting a lot of flicker from the screen (as often happens when filming a display) so made a few adjustments in post-production to make sure you guys could see everything more clearly. You can see from 0:28 that the native iDrive menu has the same slightly laggy feel. How do you use MMI if you're not a crApple fanboy and have an Android phone?

You can use your Android phone with the MMI. Just download an Android Auto app from Google Play to your smartphone and pair your phone with the MMI. CarPlay will instantly switch to Android Auto :)

Marcus Isnard lol I saw other videos and turns out it’s just an edit from the there video it’s pretty smooth the only drawback I’ve seen is that no volume indicator when you put it up and down other than that you can even control the screen from the steering wheel

I recently got the CarPlay MMI Prime professionally installed by a BimmerTech approved shop in Dallas in my 2013 328i. I was able to pair iPhone X to the car fine with AUX set to radio station #8. It worked for a day. This morning the pairing stopped working again. The AUX setting (#8) was switched back to an FM radio station! How can that happen? So the phone calls and audio were no longer audible. This pairing video starts off with the iphone connected to a USB. I don’t have a USB available for this. Do I need USB to Pair initially?

@@Ventjock Actually you don't need to remove the glovebox. You have plenty space to route the cable from the multimedia box to the passenger front door using the space and view from removing the "aluminium look" trim from dashboard. I recommend you to plan the route through the car before starting the process. In my case, the most difficult part was the trunk. I disassembled almost everything because I want to route the cable near to factory cables. Hey Ashwin! Everything is wireless if your phones are compatible, but switching between the two is best done via the USB cable. Apple and Android make different use of the OEM BWM hardware.

CarPlay activation is usually available in 2016+ vehicles but with our CarPlay MMI Prime retrofit even 2008+ cars can have CarPlay. W can check if it's available for you only by your VIN. Please send us its last 7 digits.
