Frames are not in the physical layer of the OSI (layer 1). They’re in the datalink (layer 2). The physical layer uses electrical signals/bits/symbols.

That depends on which end you are, the sending or receiving end. Both are correct.

Not to be nit-picky, but frames are on the data-link layer and ethernet is technically the physical layer. Layer 1= Bits Layer 2= Frames Layer 3= Packets Layer 4= Segments Layers 5-7= Data Wireshark labels things a little strangely so it can be misleading, just wanted to clarify that for anyone studying the OSI model.

I've used Wireshark regularly and the pcap files during my BSc studies. A cool feature is the TCP conversation visualization. I don't specifially know where you can find it, but it matches packets sent back and forth between the local computer and server. Worth a look.

Can't get video to play. It plays either an AllState ad and then goes nowhere displaying the red youtube play button. If I press it reload the page etc etc it just replays the ad. Can't watch.

Good video. It's been awhile since I've messed around with packet sniffers so this has been an excellent refresher. A future video with tips for spotting malicious activity would also be useful.

Hi Shannon, according to a Cisco course I followed some time ago, SSL is on the presentation layer, not the session layer. Is this correct?
@nilpo198 жыл бұрын
It's open to interpretation, but strictly speaking SSL should probably be on the Session layer since it is a wrapper for HTTP. However, you could argue that it is Session, Presentation, or even Application. SSL is one of those fun little gray areas. The OSI Model is just that, a model. It's open to interpretation and not everything fits it just perfectly.

Installed this on Mint Linux, right away said it's not authorized, I google a bit and there seems to be crazy long stuff you have to do to give the app access to your wifi.....OR "sudo wireshark" - But this seems frowned upon...so how about one episode in the series where you show us a nice easy way to get this up and running on Linux...and stop using Windows!...does Mr Kitchen use windows?!...I bet he doesn't.....Love the show, Scott in the UK (inc. Scotland)

We use all operating systems in the studio. I've been using my windows laptop lately because it's my default OS for my SDR series, and all has the best hardware. Yes, I'm aware can also dual boot into Linux as well, but I already did a Wireshark tutorial for linux back in 2012; kzbin.info/www/bejne/bImYhaqsfL17hpI

You cannot easily get around that requirement of running 'sudo'. Access to the lower layers (I believe transport and lower, but it may be a lower layer) requires kernel mode privileges. To do so, you need the root password, which you enter when you use 'sudo' to launch it. . I'm not sure who told you 'sudo' is "frowned upon", but it's not - it's necessary in some instances, such as examining low levels of the OSI layer which reside only inside kernel mode space and aren't exposed directly to user mode.

good info :D but dayum if she had been my teacher way back when I learned networks... I probably wouldn't remember OSI by now... rofl her cuteness along with 'her technical knowledge' is kinda disturbing imo, one would think she's just a host reading screens, but that's kinda sexist... who would exploit females for spectator views? oh right... humans
