I purchased a new unit in 2016, had to call them out multiple times because of issues using the heater. The last time I called them out they told me the system needs to be rewired because the wiring was sliced together in multiple locations. Estimate $1400 for two man job. Given that fact that they installed it when I purchase the unit NEW, I told them to go you know what. After evaluating the system and seeing this video I went to my local hardware store spent $80 on 18-7 wire and in less than 5 hours the unit is working flawlessly. Well done on this presentation... Thank you for saving my families Christmas.

Well, I have been in refrigeration business for over 30 years and this is one of the best videos I have seen explaining heat pump wiring. Especially if you are marring units together. Like a Trane Condenser with a Lenox air handler to keep using R-22. Some folks don't have the funds to upgrade to 410a. So if Evaporator is good and holds nitrogen pressure, You can just replace the condenser/compressor. The only shock to the customer is the cost of R-22, and no warranty.

Excellent explanation that answered my question as to why W2 needed to be connected to the outside unit. It makes perfect sense to have the outside unit activate the heat strips during defrost cycle, but I had just assumed that the thermostat 3-degree deferential offset was handling that. This works to keep the temperature deferential at 1 degree. Thanks!

I installed my own heat pump system and was growing frustrated because my electric heat coil would come on about 1 minute after my heat pump. I was double and triple checking my low voltage wiring and refrigerant charge and everything kept checking out OK. What I didn't know, and what your video explained, is that the thermostat will automatically turn on the electric coil (i.e. "emergency heat") if there's more than 1 degree of difference between the set temperature and the temperature in the room. If the room were at 71 degrees, I'd set the thermostat to 78 degrees to ensure the heat didn't inadvertently turn off. I didn't realize the thermostat was SUPPOSED TO turn on the electric heat when there was such a large temperature difference between the room and thermostat setting. When I set the heat level so it was only 1 degree off, ta-da! It worked like I expected. THANK YOU for making this subtle, yet very important, point.

Now that is a great Video!!! I was having a problem with at new heat pump reversing valve, i didn't know that Reheem is backwards. I purchased a Weatherking (made by Reheem) 2 ton heat pump and the didn't understand why the damn this was running in heat mode. "O" was connected to it (backwards) I corrected it at the thermostat. I have a Carrier heat pump system with an Infinity thermostat and I want to upgrade to a wifi thermostat Honeywell T5 this week. Would there be anything that I would need to know? Does the Infinity thermostat have a C wire to make it the 5 wires I need for the T5?

Very very good explanation- I really enjoyed your tutorial because in my area of the world it gets very cold during winter so basically we use Nat Gas forced air furnace systems and air source HP are just not usable around here. That being said in 35+ years in the trade I never come across Air to Air HP's and so I like to learn about things I really never get a chance to get my hands on. That would also include oil burners, we are Natural gas country so an oil furnace would be a rare bird to come across. If you can do Oil furnace tutorials too, that would be my request. Cheers!

What might cause electric arc between contacts on the relay inside the furnace when the heat is on in an older Ruud? Seems to only do it after the heat runs then reaches temp then turns on the second time at which it starts clicking and jumping arc between contacts on the relay.

Great video, very good explanation of how a heat pump and the thermostat function. So, I have a related question and because you sound so knowledgeable I am going to ask you my "Thinking Out of the Box" question. I live in a 3200 s/f single-story house and I have two heat pumps now that we are retired and living on SS I don't want to heat or cool the entire house al the time. I have a 3.5-ton unit for the living part of the house and a separate 2.5-ton unit on the other side of the house down a hallway for the four bedrooms. Typically we only run the 3.5-ton unit during the day and turn the other unit off, then at night, we turn off the 3.5-ton unit and only run the 2.5-ton unit at night while we are sleeping. Doing this saves us a lot of money because there is no need to heat the entire house at night while we are sleeping, and vice-versa. A few times during the year when we have company over we run both units at the same time for a few hours to condition the entire house. Ok, here comes my question, is there a device used for zoning HVAC systems that would automatically switch between the two thermostats, meaning I could set a timer of sorts to turn on the 3.5 system during the day and then off at night and then turn on the 2.5 system to run during the night? In other words some device with a timer that would control the power to the two different thermostats? Or maybe a dual thermostat combo system that has two thermostats that communicate with each other? Any thoughts or info on how to accomplish cycling the on and off between the two different thermostats automatically would really be appreciated. Thanks

Did you ever get an answer to your question? If it were me, I would just buy 2 identical programmable thermostats and time them to go on and off opposite each other. Set one up to go on at morning and off at night, and the bedroom one to turn off in the morning to hand off to the other one as it is starting. Then at night they switch. One goes off and the other goes on. When you want both on, just put the off one on manual hold.

Working on Manual D, but the wiring time will come soon. I don't want the emergency heat to turn off manually, because if nobody is in the house by the time the temperature rises, we are going to damage the heat pump. Do you have a video on that? I can't thank you enough! I have a suspected defrost board failure after replacing a known failed thermostat- I believe lightning got both. Now I am confident I can do so. I do have ONE question, and I believe I know the answer. This Diamond Air board does NOT have a W2, but it does have a D terminal- which I wired into W2 at the air handler when I installed it 7 years ago.I had the manuals then.... so the D terminal is a defrost signal to the strip heat/ air handler?

Question: The defrost circuit board has an output wire W2 and it is connected to W2 on the air handler circuit, does W1 and W2 on the air handler side have to be jumped or is it optional? Great video. My question is if temp drops 3 degrees and 24 is send to wi or aux. for heat strip. and outdoor system goes into defrost at the same time sending 24 to heat strips as well. Wouldn't that be a problem with the two sources Of 24 volts. Thanks.

The 24v is all coming from one 24v transformer. There is not another in the outdoor unit so it will be ok. It will still read 24v and not double as if it was coming from two sources. Thanks, great question though!

Need advice, I have a common 3 Ton split system gas furnace. My compressor failed after 15 years of service. I recently purchased a new 3.5 Ton heat pump condenser as a replacement. I would like to take advantage of the heat pump technology and use the gas furnace as backup heat. My question revolves around the specifications of the new replacement evaporator coil. I noticed that most heat pump condenser units are married to an air handler with electric backup heat, instead of an evaporator coil box on a gas furnace. I understand that gas heat is possible as backup with a heat pump, but I'm confused about what modifications need to be made to the evaporator coil TXV. Please advise if there are special TXV for heat pump evaporator coil configuration and if there is something that is needs to be done to the furnace. Thanks Kevin

I have always put a small peace of stat wire between y1&2 and w1&2 on the fan coil bord I do not know the reasoning behind it but I see that you use just the y and w 2 terminal's next time and disregard the y&w 1 terminal's I guess that for dule stage heat and cool and the y&w#1 terminal's are the low part of the stage ?

Great question! So on this board which is a hk61ea005 the W1 and W2 are jumpered by that small black board jumper to the left of the terminal which you can remove. You are right that the y1 is only for 2 speed ac's or heat pumps and is not needed for single speed models. Great Questions! Continuous fan is for the G terminal when you turn the fan from auto to on to select the desired speed. The AC/HP Size selector and AC/HP Adjust are for the correct Y terminal fan speed. Thanks

Some electric strips boards won't allow W2 unless you hook up W1.

How to break the Rc or C to a heat pump for a condensation safety float switch USING A NEST thermostat. The nest has a battery that is charging. so when the float switch opens the thermostat charging circuit, the NEST continues to run the AC in humid Florida until the battery goes dead. I could break the 'call for compressor' but don't want for the fan to run continuously until the faulty condensate drain is found and corrected. Craig, I know you are the man and have the answer... GarGle can't find the answer and NEST tech support just was googling for the answer and then wanted to make an appointment for a tech to come out and likely break the call for compressor wire Y1

Hello: I live in Az, heat pump doesn't work too much. Do I need the white wire in the thermostat? The reason I'm asking is because I just discovered that my white wire in my thermostat is Orange the technician never connected a white one. Thanks a lot for the time you take to teach us.

White in the thermostat would be if you had electric resistance heat in the air handler. Otherwise it wouldn't be hooked up if you didn't have it, thanks

I have noticed that my system goes into defrost mode often and there is no ice on the outdoor coil. Is there any way I can make an adjustment on the defrost board to make it only do it when the coil is iced over? Sure hate allowing unecessary wear and tear on the compressor/reversing valve. I am in Savannah Ga so it does not get below 32 degrees often here. The unit is a Lennox 13-hpx-030-230-13.

Yes there is usually a time adjustment on the board but most boards also have an input for a dft temp sensor on the condensor line too and both need to make before defrost would occur. Look up "acservicetech deftrost board" "acservicetech dft"

hi im putting in a line set on a 21/2 heat pump company recommends 1/4 od line for liquid but service valve is 3/8 should i use 3/8 or get a reducer and use 1/4 thank you JIM

I am assuming that you are talking about a minisplit because a standard split system that is that size would not run 1/4" usually. On split systems 18,000 btu to 60,000 the liquid size is 3/8" depending on the refrigerant and line set length. A minisplit that is 2.5 tons and has multiple indoor head units may use multiple 1/4" liquid lines, thanks and I would read the installation literature again to be sure, thanks

I have a Goodman air handler being fed with a hydronic zone for heat. I have a 3 ton condenser outside for a/c. I have a Honeywell programmable heat/ac thermostat. The wiring(R,W,G) for the heat is coming from a taco switching relay at the boiler. I have 2 wires from the condenser to the air handler. My question is the wiring from the air handler to the thermostat. Hope I gave you enough information. A furnace I would have just run a five wire from the thermostat to the furnace and 2 wire from the condenser to the furnace. The air handler is obviously different since the heating source is from a separate boiler and does not generate heat on its own.

Hey Gary, I am assuming you do mean switching relay and definitely not a zone control instead. How about taking the voltage output that is going to the pump that feeds this loop and going to a 120 general purpose relay that opens and closes contacts. There you could take a red 24v power from the r terminal in the air handler and on the normally open side connect the a green wire to go to g on the air handler control board? That would turn the fan on for this hot water coil.

Quick question. My parents recently got a new rheem system. Non heat pump model. For heat it uses strips, which I think is a bad idea for efficiency. Im trying to talk then into buying a rheem heat pump condenser unit. Before doing so I want to make sure that a rheem heat pump condenser can be swapped with a rheem non heat pump condenser. Is the air handler any different or they all the same? Thanks for any help.

That would be the same as long as it was sized correctly. Yeah no one really installs heat strips with just a condensor unless it is just a seasonal residence that is not used much during winter. Up where I am at, it isn't even a good idea to install a heat pump with electric resistance because it is too cold so we do forced air gas furnaces and sometimes dual fuel systems with gas furnace and heat pump outdoor unit, thanks!

W1 and W2 are first and 2nd stage heat. I was hoping you could provide a little more detail on the w1 and w2 terminals, what they do and how to hook them up. Is one of them responsible for turning the emergency heat on during the defrost cycle? otherwise why would these terminals even need to be on the heat pump?

Where does the compressor contactor get its 24 volts from. Is it from the fan coil board or the defrost board outside

Hello, Thanks for the videos, I had a furnace and a cold climate heat pump installed, and for about the first five minutes both heat strips and pump come on at the same time, the installer is telling me this is normal. Thanks very much for any input.

Sounds normal. Seems that your set temp on thermostat upon start up is 2-3+ deg. higher than the indoor temp. This differential is calling for the heat strips. Once the differential is lessened, then only heat pump will run and eventually shut off once set point of thermostat is reached.

@@MaMa-qh4dy Hi thanks so much for the reply, no I have it set for 22 Celcius and they both come on every time it starts up. Strong heat for the first five minutes then you hear the relay clicks off and the heat goes down and then only the pump continues.

The outdoor stat is usually just a sensor that is wired into s1 and s2 on the honeywell thermostats like in the video "acservicetech dual fuel wiring" thanks

Changing everything now. I have two mixed systems. Inside unit is different than the outside but my thermostats don't seem to be corresponding with what is said on video. When I look at my thermostats and turn it on for heat. I get continuity through the R wire through G and W but not Y. So I get my heat strips turned on I am guessing. If the wires are following what this is claiming. The unit I have in my main home has been like this since I was in it. It is a Rheem inside so I do not have an air handler board inside. Goodman outside. My yellow transfers from it to a R when it goes outside. I will probably find out that it is connected to the Comp. outside. One is a Honeywell RTH2410B and the other is a RTH 2310 and they both do the same. Noting going through the Y on heat. Cooling seems right. Turn it on and it has from R to Y,O and G. Any thoughts. Wrong Thermostat?
