Wisco Boater meets Wayne Kolb, and his Miami Vice boats!!!

This was such a special opportunity for me and I had to share it with you! I met up with well-known Miami Vice guru, Wayne Kolb, for a tour of his shop that contains 4 Scarabs, one of which is "Star 2" from the show in an on-screen role. It was the first Scarab to appear on the show. Wayne also owns two Miami Vice Special Editions, one is still in Vice colors, and the other one will be again soon. The 4th boat is a Scarab 1, a George Barris boat that promoted the Universal Studios Miami Vice stunt show. A special treat for me at the end is a rip up the highway in Wayne's Ferrari Daytona Spider replica that is similar to the replica's that were used in the show. The Scarab One was actually nicknamed “Mini Vice.” We were the largest inland Wellcraft dealer in the mid 80s and located on Lake Lanier in Atlanta. I was about 13-14 at the time and I asked my dad what about the guys who can’t afford a “$100k” 38 KV? Why not paint up a Scarab One and call it Mini Vice? My dad ordered a few of them and they sold well as Wellcraft hadn’t thought of it and it was before the Universal stunt shows. There was many a time my dad was driving around his 38 and I was driving around my Scarab One Lake Lanier both painted up like Miami Vice.

I always like the Original Chris Craft Stinger over the Scarabs. The very famous scene in "Calderone's Return Part II" when they travel to the Bahamas with the song "Voices" by Russ Ballard. Iconic.

I remember going out on a boat just like this in the Pasadena/Annapolis area of Maryland. Guys’ names were Hal and Warner, a few mechanic shop owners. Would be insane if this is the same boat…Awesome memories.

There actually was a THIRD Scarab used in the show and only used ONCE in the episode Like a Hurricane S04E08 introducing Sheena Easton as Caitlin. The scene where Sonny and Caitlin are escaping the restaurant from the assassins and they leave via Sonny's boat, look at the rear of the boat. It does NOT have those raised vents for the engines. It has the sunbathing pads the original Chris Craft had on it's rear end. It was probably a stunt boat that they had to rig with spark squibs so the boat looks like it gets shot up.

For years I would pass by #2 on it's lift in Bluff Point, on the Severn River in Severna Park Md. I knew it was the real deal by the Number on the back , and also think that there were still camera mounts on the side of the cockpit. Never saw it off the lift or used in the water. Time period was mid 90's thru the 2000's. Also have recently as a few years ago seen a Hull ( no motors or interior) at Harbor Marine in West OC Maryland, but it disapeared a year ago.

Super nice. Those 400 cyclone motors rip! I have a 400 cyclone in a 27 Excalibur that bill farmer built. I rebuilt the motor with a bigger hydro roller cam and all the hydro goods. Same Gil exhaust. Boat cruises at 50 mph at 3500 rpm. Wot is 71 mph at 5400 rpm. The boat loves big water. Very fun to run. This video got my blood moving!!!

Too bad the interior of the car is the wrong color. otherwise a cool collection. The finest exsisting Miami Vice boat, which was also signed by Don Johnsen, bought by a Norwegian. It's been a long time since I've seen it here in Norway. I often saw it in the Oslofjord. Does anyone know where that boat is now ? This boat also had a signature on the dashboard, not just hidden away under an engine cover..
