In this video we try to tease apart the somewhat hidden but important distinctions between wisdom and knowledge. These distinctions will become increasingly important as we deepen into our study of Asian philosophy. Philosophy in general, and Asian philosophy in particular, place the acquisition of wisdom at the center of their purpose and mission. The sciences are concerned with the amassing of knowledge, but philosophy is the love of wisdom.

🙏 Dear Peter, from where I stand after listened to some of your videos, you appear to me and I believe that you are the embodiment of wisdom and your knowledge on spiritual and religious matters is bottomless. I am so grateful to have found your channel, Grace came upon me and as the saying goes : When the student is ready, the teacher appears. Many many pranams to you, with metta. 💜🙏📿 Tat Tvam Asi.

You're too kind and give me too much credit. But it is a good feeling, and one I know well, when you come across a book or a video or a teacher that opens up something inside of you so your own wisdom can come out. It's a resonance thing. No one's in charge of that.

@@PeterBolland 🙏 I am not giving you too much credit, just a right judgement that I firmly believe and of course your ego being near to non-existent at the worst you need someone from the outside to tell you that. Thank you for the resonance thing, it means a lot to me, meaning that maybe we both hear the same Drummer. With plenty of metta 💜 🙏📿 Om Tat Sat

Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is, botanically speaking, a fruit salad. Knowledge is knowing this is also true of cucumbers. Intelligence is being able to argue this makes that amazing Greek tomato/cucumber salad is technically a fruit salad. As is pico de gallo. Wisdom is knowing that when you Mom says "Honey, can you bring a fruit salad to the 4th of July party?" that bringing a tomato/cucumber salad or pico de gallo, while technically correct, is not what she has in mind. I would add Hillel the Elder to your list of wisdom teachers.

'Wisdom is the embodyment of equinamity', is good, I like that. But where does the equinamity come from? Giorgio Colli, an Italian philosopher from the 20th century, claims, more or less after Nietzsche, that with the Athenian philosophers (they are far less Greek than the Greek philosophers before them) - Socrates, Plato and Aristotle - something is lost. What is lost, is sophia, the wisdom that was the home of the 'pre-socratics' Pythagoras, Heraclitus, Parmenides, Empedocles and Zeno of Elea. It is traded in for episteme, knowledge in the hope it might lead tot wisdom The wisdom of the world, as far as I can see, teaches, or tries to show, to hint at - the Heraclitean 'semenai' - , that it is an insight, an insight into nondual reality. This insight, as far as I can see, is at the heart of all the great traditions. In Plato there still are reflections of where he came from; in Aristotle it is lost. Heraclitus is just as arrogant as Jesus; they do not say 'What I know is that I don't know'; they teach you, or try to guide you towards the threshold that, when crossed, catapults you straight up into this kingdom/heaven, or nothingness, or harmony or however it is called. That is where the equinamity comes from, that is where its origin lies. Its perennial wisdom, it is insight in nondual reality - it is transformative. That is where the smile on your face comes from. You are really very good at what you're doing. I'm on the other side of the world, enjoying youre classes very much.

Knowledge is about facts, Wisdom is about applying those facts to your life in a positive way.
