If you go to the blog post in the description below the video you can see directions for that. They are indented bullets. Essentially, I would insert all of the clothes and recipe ingredients sprinkled over the top and then start the machine. Once the water has filled let it agitate to fully dissolve the laundry stripping ingredients and then use the stop/pause button to soak. Periodically start it again for the agitation and then re-pause/stop to soak more. Repeat that process for 2 to 8 hours. Then finish off with the wash cycle. Marie's new washing machine is a front loading locking machine so this is what she has to do.

What if I mixed all the ingredients in a bucket first with really hot water to make sure it's all dissolved, then place it in the washer with the clothes then start the cycle?

For the one worrying about the fancy new machines. I would maybe suggest mixing up the solution in a bucket of close to hot water then dumping it in. It's quite a challenge using the old methods on the new machines, that's for sure. I'm jealous to see an "old" machine in that great condition...I'd love to get one! We're on a farm, and our new machine doesn't even have a filter to clean out. It's awful when I wash the men's work clothes. Sand, dirt, anything that isn't soluble stays in the tub and I have to clean in it out by hand, sometimes with a damp rag then vaccum. I had a schedule in my month to clean the filter on my old one and loved it.

My friend just bought a old school Speed Queen and I’m so jealous! I HAAAAATE my newer machine! Even when I tell it I want extra water, I come out half way through the cycle and it has decided for me that I won’t be having extra water this load and turns the extra water light off. I hate it!

I have a fairly newish top load low agitation machine. I need to dissolve powders outside of the machine as it does not dissolve even in hot water. I do have a laundry tub next to the washer so will try this in it. Washing the items in the same gross water seems a bit gross.

Though I'm nervous about all the chemicals, I might try this. I appreciate your instruction, as well as the informative responses you've given to commenters. I do want to bring up one thing on your video that is of concern, though: you mention leaving the top of the washer up to "stop" it. However, doing that does not "stop the timer" of the machine, which means you'll basically lose out on the agitation cycle and will find, within the hour, that your clotheswasher has automatically drained because the timer is still going; it drains at the same time it would do so with a regular, closed lid cycle...at least that's what my washer does (GE) and I assume it's the same for the more basic (but awesome!) washers, regardless of the brand. The instructions for my machine mention this, but I first learned about it by accident when manually soaking items for the first time. It was not so great finding that my clotheswasher had drained within the hour of when I was expecting to find my clothes still soaking :-/ I don't know why the older/basic washers were built like that--it doesn't make sense!--but that is my cautionary tale to prevent unpleasant surprises, especially after putting all that product into the washer. With that said, the only way to stop agitation is by either pushing the dial button in or using the pause button on your washer (if that is what you have, instead). Perhaps that might be a correction to add to your video, if you're able!? 😬 Again, thank you for the video! I can only wonder how you came up with that concoction! It noticeably worked, especially with your aprons! Kudos!

How well does this work on colors? My sons work in food service as cooks. I have to add Dawn dish soap a couple of times a month to "degrease" their uniforms.

@Lyla Waters, This is Emmaline chiming in. It's fine to omit the citric acid as Marie Said, if you are concerned of the higher acidic levels, but I don't. I use this on my husband's construction clothes all the time and never have a problem. I believe the color of his clothes are just as bright even with the citric acid.

I'm in the UK and most of our machines are front loading, cold fill. My first automatic machine was top loading but as I don't have a laundry room and the machine has to be in the kitchen under the worktop, I had to change to the front load. I never feel the need to strip my laundry. If I wash something and it still has a stain when it has been washed, I would treat the stain and wash again and everything would be clean. My whites come out white, my colours come out clean and bright. A little bit of bleach now and again on some things. I don't use fabric softener in my machine any more because I feel it collects inside the machine too much. When I used washing powder I always put it directly into the drum on top of the clothes, now I tend to use small pods that dissolve.

For anyone else who hates their newer washing machine as much as I do, after losing one and a half batches of these ingredients (1st time-filled up the washer about three inches with hot water, but the pause button and added all the ingredients, ran back inside to grab the laundry and returned to an empty washer 5 minutes later 😤😡😤 because I guess it can’t hold water at that point?!??? 2nd time-added it faster and kept watch as it continued on with the cycle a bit so I could rest assured it was beyond the point where it’s not really holding water- but while I paused it to push the laundry around inside with a long stick and was trying to get the dirtiest thing to stay under water (my son’s backpack), the stupid washer without any warning said “dr” and started draining the water!!!! 🤬) so I learned the trick… once you get as much water in it as you want, UNPLUG IT! I’m three hours in now and it’s holding water. I hate my new washing machine sooooooooo much!

If you use it for colors, you just leave out the citric acid. It's not a bad idea to test a corner of the fabric to be sure it will work well. Each are a little different.

I’m curious, if washing soda is just baking soda with the moisture baked out of it, and you’re adding it back to the water, why can’t we just use baking soda for stripping? Is there really a difference?

Washing soda and baking soda are very different chemicals. When baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is heated the sodium bicarbonate changes to sodium carbonate (washing soda), carbon dioxide, and water. While baking soda can be used to wash fruits/vegetables and use in cooking as a leavening agent (for example in quick breads), washing up soda is NOT edible. Just adding water to the washing up soda does not reverse this chemical reaction.

I'm with everyone else complaining about the new washers. I think they forget about farmers,ranchers,lumberjack s, and many more of the working occupation s that actually get dirty! I gave my ringer washer to my Mom and Dad in the late 80's be cause mom didn't like the new machines then. She would take a hammer to the ones we have now!😁 Thanks ladies, I will try adding the boric acid. It works pretty good without it, it will be interesting to compare.

WHAT IS STRIPPING LAUNDRY? Traditionally speaking, stripping laundry is removing detergent and fabric softener residue from your fabrics. This includes the build-up of hard water minerals that you aren’t able to remove from your laundry with each regular washing.

So can you use this in a machine that is HE detergent only? I know if I use too much detergent in a wash that it will suds up to the point that the machine just stops working correctly. I ask because of the dish soap that you use in this. Thanks. Love your Videos!

While high-efficiency (HE) washers do require the use of low-sudsing HE detergent formulas due to lower water levels used in each cycle, the "old-fashioned" detergent boosters like wasging soda and borax can still be used in the machines. Detergent boosters add more cleaning power to less expensive laundry detergents to help whiten whites, remove stains, and act as a water softener. The hydrogen peroxide vinegar, and citric acid shouldn't do a thing. They are fine. The only item I would question is the Dish Soap. That is the item that is most sudsing. My internet research has shown people who have been successful and others who claim bubble came out the laundry soap drawer. I would put it directly on the clothes and not in the drawer. There's a possibility you would need an extra rinse cycle as well. BUT, as the research conflicts and I do not have an HE machine I would say you should test the dish soap in small portions. Perhaps try with 1/4 the amount and work up until you are sure it works perfectly. If anyone else has experience here, please chime in!

I personally think that this is too many ingredients to place in your washing at one time. And all of these ingredients can damage your laundry. Especially if you use it in every load. And many powdered ingredients have a hard time fully dissolving. I personally think that hot water and some white vinegar is more than enough to fully strip your clothing. And be extremely careful with Dawn dishwasher soap it is really bubbly and can cause your washing machine to break. So I really do not recommend using Dawn dish soap unless you are hand washing your clothing in a bucket or in your tube. And absolutely never use any type of fabric softener or fabric sheets in your dryer it will damage them. Add fabric softener and fabric sheets have a lot of toxic chemicals which stay on your clothing and is not safe. I would be very careful in what you place in your washing machine and in your dryer. And absolutely never overload your washing machine with your clothing and never overload your dryer with clothing small loads only. I honestly tried many of these kind of ideas which caused me a lot of problems. And damaged my washing machine by trying them. I would recommend trying these only with your hand washing before trying it in your washing machine. It is better to be safe than sorry.

you will have the same result using tide powder that is much more stronger than liquid and doesen't not have silicons and preservatives that stick in you clothes, and baking soda and leave in extra hot water 6 hours

I wish the host would explain why you need all these chemicals. It’s not cooking. There should be some science behind it all. One should know that some of the chemicals can be quite toxic and can burn you. Working with chemicals require safety glasses and gloves. Safety first! And btw, hydrogen peroxide is very dangerous. You try to mix it with something basic like baking soda will neutralize the pH, which kinda defeats the purpose. I’m not a chemist. But I vaguely remember all of it. Citric acid is similar to hydrogen peroxide. Except it’s milder. So why mix it all?! Please explain!!!

Citric acid and vinegar are safe to consume and digest so it's not toxic. Baking is also used in baking but they are using washing soda and when mixed with vinegar, it injects extra oxygen in the water to lift stains like with oxyclean. Dish soap is not toxic to your skin. Non of these items are toxic and only the dish soap is the only thing not found in nature.

It just seems like you were adding too many ingredients. Just too long of a video for something that should be simple. I would just stick to borax, detergent and arm & hammer detergents… way easier and you can still press pause on your machine.
