Railroad Crossing: Columbus Avenue in Anderson, IN. CSX Main Track 2

This is CSX track 2 through Anderson, IN. Crossing Columbus Avenue between 19th Street and Ohio Avenue (State Road 32). Track 1 and track 2 split up through Anderson and come back together on either end of the city. Track 2 runs through downtown with several crossings. Track 1 runs through South Anderson Yards. The traffic lights are tied in to the crossing (pre-emption). During a train's presence, the lights at the crossing are on steady red, not flashing, but the lights at the intersection flash red in all directions.
(Update: They all flash now.)
Video starts with pictures of the crossing.
Actual video starts at 2:05.
At 18:08 signal maintainer shown checking the crossing signals. Notice how what he does affects the traffic lights, thus, confusing motorist into running the red light after they stop flashing at the intersection. You'll see a couple near-misses.
At 22:44 a storm knocked out power in the area. As a result, the crossing signals went to back-up power. The signals come on when this happens.

The detector count wheels, which means axles. It does not differentiate between wheels of railcars and locomotives. 99, thank you for showing the traffic signal preemption sequence. Why sounding horn for a grade crossing protected with gates?

I believe it's all the axles including the locos. I say this because I've seen just locos get an axle count from the defect detector also. On a related note, in my next video there will be "defect detected". Pretty cool for anyone who hasn't heard one yet.

@sirkrunch, I wish. They'd empty a few ticket books if they did. My next video blows this out of the water. There is a crossing here in town that everyone races the train. Throw stereo types out the window. Old ladies, young drivers, everyone. The train can be less than a city block away and they'll floor it.

@@mxderate - Columbus Ave curves in the middle of the intersection. - Bizarre/dumb angles of all roads involved. - Ohio Ave changes to E 18th St (confusing enough but it isn't signed anywhere, either). - E 18th St and Columbus Ave both curve immediately off of the intersection. - The RR crossing 60FT from the northbound stop line. - Unless some unsigned ordinance overrides, right turns are permitted on Red when northbound on Columbus Ave. - The Columbus Ave northbound right-turn lane signal has both right-pointing arrows and ball indications. - Northbound Columbus Ave grade crossing cantilever signals are not over the lanes entering the crossing. - Right-turn lane on Columbus Ave northbound adds additional conflict point coming off of the grade crossing which can dangerously queue vehicles. - No object marker on northbound gore for right-turn lane. - Missing "Do Not Stop On Tracks" signs. - Street lighting on north side of grade crossing appears inadequate to ensure approaching traffic can identify a train on the crossing in the dark. Alas my parents didn't have anything to do with the design of this intersection.

@@jovetj - Technically 18th doesn't really start until the split w/ Ohio Ave. but point taken there. - The cantilevers are where they are because of the traffic lights. Plus, it would be less visible because of the traffic lights. - For point 12, isn't that what RR crossing are for? Other than those, fair points. Though this crossing still is very nice and unique. There isn't many of these.

@@mxderate It's the intersection I don't like more than the crossing. Even that dumb building sitting right on the corner hampers road and track visibility. The crossing is what it is, but I'll bet the roads came after the tracks. The road engineers (hah!) should have had a longer bit of think. - Oh, I see what you mean. I was suckered in by a quirk of the map site. I sit corrected. - I understand why they chose to do the northbound cantilever that way, but it's a poor implementation with multiple lanes. If there were just one northbound lane then I would be okay with it. Visibility of the grade crossing signal lights is of the utmost importance. - Don't underestimate driver stupidity or impatience. Driving into the side of a shadowy train in the dark is common. The grade crossing signals will probably always work, but what if they don't? A well lit crossing helps everyone, no matter the situation.

No. The only reason traffic signals should be present at any railroad crossing is because of a proximate, signalized intersection.

Malfunction at 18:22 Railroad crossing lights just shut off during preemption but the traffic lights at the intersection thinks that they are active.

If you read the description of the video, you'll learn that a signal maintainer was confusing the traffic signal controller.

Alvin Logan, unfortunately I have no idea. This is one of my earlier works and I didn't know enough to get the unit numbers. I am working on an update on this crossing as the traffic signals have changed. It will be a while but should be a good improvement (HD, among other things).

I have to be honest with you, I don't know why. This is one of my earlier videos. I still had a lot to learn how to make a decent video and was still using a crappy version of Windows Movie Maker. Your question is legit. This is up near the top of one of my most viewed videos. My guess is something about my tags, but I don't know what exactly.
