A funnier Breaking Bad. It's really post-comedy, like Nanette. The punchline is just a punch, in the end. It's not there to make you laugh, the laughter is to help you make it until the end.

“The punchline is just a punch” That’s a good one!

A joke without a punchline is not a joke but rather just a statement. A lot of statements are gut punches. Nanette is not comedy. Also I'm not hating if you enjoy it you enjoy it I'm just letting you know comedy has to be funny.
@deSloleye2 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisMorganComedy it's more than that, it can be an argument, a fable. Breaking Bad wasn't a statement. It was an argument, a cautionary tale, a tragedy. And Nanette absolutely was comedy. That was a masterclass in comedy that pulled back around and hit with the punches afterwards. Comedy is a tool, a way to illustrate something in a way you're receptive to. That's how Hannah Gadsby used it, and how Bill Hader uses it. The tragedy isn't as interesting without the comedy, and we can handle much darker ideas when it's delivered with that comedy.

@failedleopard36852 жыл бұрын
I think the brilliance of the show is the incredible blend of the comedy and serious moments. It makes us laugh for two episodes straight, and then suddenly there is a long scene which shows how brutal and serious the themes they discuss are. Take the finale of season 2, Barry been stumbling through comedy and serious moments, and then suddenly it's all serious and emotionally gutter punch because it violates the expectations that been set. We hold our breaths waiting for the laughter track, but it never comes.

Barry reminds me a lot of the darkness of “Fargo” or Jerry Orbach’s disconnected zingers at the beginning of Law & Order. It’s really impressive they’ve managed to extend it this long though.

Little spoiler for the scene with the "death we see but don't hear", that was talked about The kill Sally does is super metal! This is the first time I've even had to think about someone being stabbed in the eye through the side of their skull. This attention to detail is shockingly mesmerising. Someone had to actually think through this entire motion in gruesome detail. The only other time I've felt like this was when the boss guy killed himself in Mr Robot and we saw the whole thing in way to realistic (maybe even practical SFX) detail
@toypianos4692 жыл бұрын
That dude's outright shock when he gets stabbed was so well executed.
@iwantgoals1566 Жыл бұрын
Man I thought I was the only one who appreciated little details like how realistic each violent scene is. Like when people get shot in the head with a bullet. We’ll have a scene of dead silence and quiet but all of a sudden you watch an object moving faster than you can see it just make a hole in somebody’s head with blood gushing out straight away and it’s quite shocking. Those little details really bring it home and allow you to understand just how serious, graphic violent and chaotic scenarios like shoot outs actually are. Unlike the way they are made to seem fun and almost harmless by most Hollywood media. Even the explosion in S3 wasn’t turned into a typical Hollywood explosion. They show you how these things violently rip everything to shreds without a ball of light to make it look cool and epic. Writing and directing on this show is on another level.

Throughout season 1 BARRY wonders "is this is all I'm good at?" And seeks out acting to prove that he's more than a killer, and I can't help but think that it's elegant self-insertion on Bill Hader's part, reflecting a very normal man's experience of the isolations of fame and the imposter syndrome that inevitably comes with being lauded for doing one thing well IE being an uncanny impressionist, or a star comedian, or more broadly just an actor.

For me the humor is how Barry can finally fix the anti-hero Paradox. Movies like The Wolf of Wall Street or shows like Breaking Bad have evil protagonists and the intent of the media is to criticize and show their errors, however, as we spend more time with the character we tend to empathise with its struggles and eventually glorify or romanticize their evil behaviour, as you can see if even Martin Scorsese or Vince Giligan have suffered on this issue, it is not something easy to fix. Barry succeds in fixing it by adding humour to the mix, we never see Barry as a badass warrior because the show mocks him for being pathetic, it's a genius way to fix a hard issue and contribute to making the media funnier. Conclusion, Barry is not deep and funny, Barry is deep because it's funny.

Black comedy has existed outside of television for decades. And to say that millennials are its most ardent fans is generationally myopic. I have noticed that it is mostly millennials who fret about whether Barry is a comedy or socially acceptable, or if its themes and gore are simply too much. The rest of us just recognize it as funny. Season 3 is funny. Because it is a comedy. It is written comedically. Characters don’t need to be redeemable; as long as the jokes are funny. It’s funny.
