Wishbone Ash - Rock Milestones - Argus - Full Documentary (Subs: ES/FR/DE/IT/SV)

In 1972 Wishbone Ash struck gold with their third album Argus, which helped propel the band to superstar status.
The album made Wishbone Ash one of the most popular rock bands in the world. Argus was a truly original album that saw the band at their commercial and creative peak. Argus contained epic, often medieval, themes, brilliant vocal harmonizing, insturmental precision, and arguably the best song writing of Wishbone Ash's career.
Tracks such as "The King Will Come", "Warrior" and "Throw Down the Sword" still feature in the band's live set to this day. Over time Argus has came to be regarded as The quintessential Wishbone Ash album, the one that best realized the group's complex vision.
This penetrating film review features in depth interviews with Martin Turner and Ted Turner who return to the original multi-track tapes to trace the creation of a masterpiece.

Certainly life changing for me. It was like I had found the sound that was me. Totally besotted with Ash and Argus, started a school band with mates and our first on stage song was off Argus. A while later I met a young lady who introduced me to Lord of the Rings, got the connection and everything slotted into place. That theme has stayed with me to this day.

David, saw them many times at the Cambridge Corn Exchange also in the very early 70s. When they first started out, they had garbage thrown at them on stage and was booed. The MC came out and told the audience after 3 songs in and for the show to go on, that nonsense had to stop. He reminded them that Led Zepplin had a similar thing happen at the Marque Club in London when they were starting out also. Needless to say, the show went on and I was blown away by this great band and won't forget that wonderful night of music with twin lead guitars. I even saw them with Laurie Wisefield who was a great replacement for Ted.

I've recently tripped over my Wishbone Ash collection, and revisited many of those albums. What a stupendous band - so many unforgettable melodies and lyrics from a time when talented musicians unashamedly aimed to bring beauty. I'm not too pleased to suddenly find myself knocking on the door of being 69, but that's the price one willingly pays to have grown up with bands like this. For me, this stuff never ages, just reminds me of a time when great bands served hard apprenticeships, the long slog, playing increasingly bigger venues until some A&R rep recognised genius; so unlike the numerous vacuous and vain 'musicians' of today, preening for (anti?) social media cameras and programming their material on computers.

Wishbone Ash are a guitarist's band first and foremost. I doubt there are any guitarist - certainly of my generation - that would not have had all these albums, but certainly Argus in their collection. And although this was the founding and difinitive line-up, Ash were a band that seemed to retain their unique sound and musicality well into the second and subsequent recent line-ups. I see Wishbone Ash as the UK's equivalent of Canadian band Rush in many ways, different sound for sure, but the progressive theme, prolific writing, the hard-driving committment and especially both band's longevity puts them both high on my list of all time favourite musicians and mentors. For me also, a lifelong fan of the Flying -V and Stratocaster, Powell and Schenker forged their sound on one of the most iconic electric guitars ever conceived. With W-A it was the guitar's audio nuances, distinctively different but always harmonically sychronised; the raw, nasal voice of the V complimented by the sweet bell-like tones of the Strat - With equally confident vocal harmony, That was Ash's signature.

6th May 1971 walked into a pub called the castle Tooting Broadway my 21st birthday . Big Hall out the back ended up beingstage right of Andy Powell Hooked bought the album and the song book learnt the stuff.mr Turner&Powell is self evident in my playing

There's the rub is the best! Wishbone fan since 73. Loved Argus, but all the songs on Rub are very good. Lady Jay is their masterpieces - a touching folk tale sung with such pathos by Martin, and Laurie's wailing guitar solo is so moving!

Very enjoyable documentary about one of my favourite albums, Sometime World is my favourite Wishbome Ash song, just sublime, seen them in concert four times, one was the return of the original line up in '89 at the Colston Hall bristol filmed for the granada Bedrock tv series, backed by Spirit no less, Great days that will not come again but at least we were there and will remember them until we're gone and who knows maybe we'll take them with us wherever we will go.

2:57 It all makes sense now! I was a big Iron Maiden fan from 1980-86 and discovered Wishbone Ash and had to acknowledge the heritage of that twin harmonised guitar sound. Never knew Martin "Headmaster" Birch (Iron Maiden's producer) was Wishbone Ash's sound engineer! Who Knew!

I’m from Minnesota. I first became aware of them around 75 or 76. A local band, who were really good was obviously very influenced by wishbone ash. And played a lot of their stuff. So of course we had to have the real stuff! Still have it.

Listening to their interview, I get a sense that they put a lot of thought into the making of their music. It wasn't haphazard. Every song was carefully mapped out. Compare them to a similar band like the Allman Brothers, they would probably tell you they had no idea how they came up with some of their music. Duane Allman and Dickey Betts jammed, the band followed and made it up as they went along.

One of the main reasons that these songs have a "religious, spiritual or moody" tone to them, is the regular use of minor chords. WA may have used minor chords more than most bands.....this added to "their" sound...I'm surprised no one mentions this...

Went to a concert that featured Robin Trower, Eddie Money and Wishbone ash, Never heard of Wishbone ash, and really didn't hear to much about this guy Eddie Money either, he was just starting out. I went to go see Robin Trower, Wishbone ash piloted for Eddie Money, By the time Wishbone ash got done, I felt I already got my moneys worth out of the concert. I could have went home, and been happy. They were that good. I was glad I stuck around though. This guy Eddie Money put on a great show too, Because my main attraction was for Trower I stayed for him. Trower was decent, but his base player had to leave every about every other song, was either to go do another couple of lines to continue, or he had a bathroom issue that evening. I can honestly say that Eddie Money stole the show from Trower, but Wishbone ash stole the show for the night. This was at Seland arena in Fresno. CA. Not sure what year that was but somewhere in the early to mid seventy's.

Why is the sum 3 a magic number? It's the same for such bands, it's basically a law of nature: after the third LP/CD, etc., everything went down musically and qualitatively for everyone. From the genius of the first three albums to normal to embarrassing. The reason is that youthful creativity is lost. Or they died at the age of around 30. A natural law that was only withheld from Bach and Bethoven and Hayden ecct. and some jazz musicians and singers.

39:30 that C and Bb in the lower harmony always bugged me..! (otherwise he sings C# and B which is correct) But now that it's been revealed that they recorded both parts together on the same mic, they probably didn't hear it at the time and couldn't punch-in to fix that one note (or it didn't bother them)

I was in a Toronto band way, way back covering Wishbone Ash. People often thought the Ash material was our own. Including RUSH that often caught our sets in the very early days, frequently at a bar called 'the abbey road pub' I spoke to geddy lee there on one occasion who was inquisitive as to my sound (i was on a jazz bass thru an orange reflex cabinet). No pedals whatsoever. He says: 'i'm getting one of those basses!' I told him to get a black one... I should have told him to grab a T bird bass like Martin Turner - after M.T. had been on a precision, and the ricky... Anyway, I mentioned Wishbone Ash, and if you break down some Rush tunes from that era, you can hear the Wishbone influence. I wish geddy lee would credit Wishbone Ash as an influence, but he never does. Wishbone Ash are truely incomparable. ARGUS is the best album from the best era of rock i ever heard. Just effing brilliant. All their albums are superior. No band quite like them.

I would say given the times of influence that Jailbait is heavily taken from Danny Kirwans Like Crying in his Fleetwood Mac time. I dont mind at all, late 60s early 70s produced a sound within a great pool of creativity. I would say though that Wishbone Ash didnt really need to do that.
