I never tire of listening to Paul kossoffs music or Andy Frazier’s bass lines.kossoff made every note count,he shook every note in his solos and that’s not easy.I practiced his vibrato for over a decade.his accuracy was amazing, note selection.what a friggin shame he’s gone

I really enjoy the Blackfoot cover of this song as well. I think Rick Medlocke plays the E power chord starting at the 2nd fret and finishes the riff with an E at 7 after playing the C and D respectively. I like playing it that way as well for some variety. Anyhow, thanks for another good cover.

You have helped me learn so much thanks I appreciate how you teach me to understand using my ear... any average player can go to ultimate guitar and play the song but you show how to play with your ear which is more effective.

DEF Kossoff on that searing solo his finger vibrato was epic.

Yes, despite the sleeve notes on the Heartbreaker album, Koss played the solo, as confirmed by Simon Kirke and their manager, John Glover. He plays some beautiful guitar on the track Come Together in the Morning, and the live version of Heartbreaker (on the vinyl of Free story but not the CD version) is fantastic, in it's own way as good as anything he ever played, in my opinion. I'll shut up now, thanks for the lesson. :-)

I've been rereading the book 'Heavy Load' the Free Story recently. Kossoff was literally slowly dying of Methaqualone over use at this point in his life. Free had fallen apart primarily because of a rift between Fraser & Rodgers and reformed in part because they were so worried about the disastrous effect on Kossoff. He managed some of his most hauntingly powerful playing on the Heartbreaker album despite being barely capable of playing on tour. It's such a tragedy, they were such an incredible band.

@@jamesjames9275 Thanks, James. :-) This the version I mentioned, not professionally recorded, and not everybody's cup of tea, I thought it was a noise when I first heard it - but when I "decoded" it, for me it's got all the pain, the beauty, the frustration..... and the heartbreak in there. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYPOo4OEncZsbpY

You said it was written about Koss which is incorrect. It was written about their friend Bevan T. Woodhouse. Guitar work on it is sketchy but seems the most correct info is Paul Rodgers - Rhythm, Koss - Solo and Snuffy Walden - Overdubs on the US mix.

Great song, but I have to admit I never knew this was by Free - I only know the song from Maggie Bell's version. Always liked maggie's voice. In fact, maybe the best non-Joplin Joplin song

I like their version. Gary Moore's was a little bit heavy metal for my tastes, though.
