Great stuff! I was first taught the Minor Pentatonic Scale way back in high school (around 1979). It was my junior year and I was taking guitar lessons from a senior, who was already a really good player. My 2 stated goals were to learn how to play Stairway To Heaven and to learn how to “play lead.” We accomplished the first goal in no time flat, and when we moved on to LEAD GUITAR, he assured me the magic door to reaching my goal was THE PENTATONIC SCALE!!! So he taught it to me; just the first position, and I must have played in a few hundred times. When we got together for each weekly lesson, he played a basic 12 bar blues progression and I went up and down that damn scale. No riffs, no licks, just some awkward pauses on various notes, hoping I’d suddenly and miraculously start jamming like Jimmy Page. After about the 5th or 6th “lesson,” I bailed. I couldn’t see how that damn scale would transition to LEAD GUITAR. I should mention, I also played trombone in the high school band, so I had a pretty solid understanding of basic music theory; all be it in bass clef. Anyhow, week or so after I quit, the guy’s little brother (who played the baritone) told me his brother said it was a shame I quit, because he could tell, I was “almost there.” Holy shit, almost there? So I kept practicing that damn scale, but nothing happened. And then I went to college and only brought along my acoustic guitar. So for about the next 25 years or so, I only played acoustic guitars. I never forgot that scale, but I’d given up my dreams of playing LEAD GUITAR. Now fast forward, and after a 3 year sabbatical when I never touched a guitar, I decided to get back into it. And this time, I was going to really try to learn new things. I now know all 5 positions of the minor Pentatonic Scale and practice them every day. You tube and channels like this have been a big help, too. I am definitely a better olayer now, than I was before, but I have to admit, I still can not improvise (i.e, play LEAD GUITAR), and I know very few licks to noodle around on. Kind of pisses me off, now that I think about it. But I am what I am. So, thanks for trying. Big fan.

If you want to get good at improvising, I'd suggest learning intervals, the minor pentatonic is great, but its not everything, start trying to learn simple solos by ear, califonication by red hot chilli peppers, summer of 69, smells like teen spirit, these are all simple songs to work out. I do it with little jingles i hear all the time, it's taken me from no improvisational skills to being able to sound half decent. Also when your practising your minor pentatonic, don't just play up and down the scale, you wont learn how to use it that way, its great to start with for getting the patterns ingrained, but when you have that down start to mix the notes of the scale up, (make sure you know it up and down first) start skiping strings and working in patterns for example try playing note 1, note 3, note 2, note 4, note 3, note 5, note 4, note 1 work up and down like that, and just change it up every time you've figured it out. That's how you'll learn to use it in improvisation, when you know it inside and out, and know what the intervals sound like, thats when it comes to life.

@@troublingleaf thanks. I do all that already. Truly do. And I’ve learned solos and practiced them, over and over, but I sound stiff when I do that and it just doesn’t translate. On the other hand I’m super comfortable improving chords and sound smooth and melodic. And not just 145 stuff either, some really interesting chord transitions. I also have a strong ear for music and can typically quickly pickup whatever is playing in the background while watching TV or YT. But the effortless lead guitar stuff has always eluded me. I need to learn more licks that I can chain together in different combinations, but I haven’t found a good place to pick that part up. Thanks again for your thoughtful advice and your lengthy reply. All the best.

@jeffpodrug8942
@jeffpodrug8942 Жыл бұрын
@@TylerJohnstonGuitar we were all over Sabbath. So cool to have your dad teach you how to play! My dad didn't play, but he knew I wanted it so bad, that he took me to buy my first guitar. I was so stubborn, I worked with him. We had a water well drilling business. I wanted to pay for it with my own money. He knew me so well. He wanted to pay for it, but he knew how badly I was drawn to this, and I believe he just wanted to support me. Our personalities were the same. God rest his soul. My mom was played Sax when she was younger, and had stacks of wax. The old big bands, Glen Miller etc. I luckily had 3 older sisters who were hippies, so I had access to all the everything 60's. I borrowed my oldest sisters portable record player, and holed up in my bedroom for 6 months. It know it had to sound terrible, but I was on my way. My mom never said a negative word about my hacking. She gave me the most important thing anyone could give a kid who was starting their journey with a musical instrument. Encouragement. One negative word from her, and I might've quit. Years later, my other two sisters took my parents out for drinks and dinner. What they really did was bring my parents to a nightly gig I was doing in San Diego, I was playing guitar and some percussion at this bar right on Pacific Pier. We were between sets and just about to come back on stage, and my sisters got a table and they excused themselves. They told my parents they had to go to the restroom and came over to this little cubby where we ran the sound board, and a small table. They came over just as I was getting up, drink in hand, about to follow my mates over to the stage. They came up to me, and I was happy to see them, gave them a hug and kiss and told them to hang out and get some drinks on my tab. I made my way to the stage, and something about the way they were smiling, seemed kinda weird, I quickly dismissed it by thinking that they were stoned or something. It took me halfway into the second song to realize that my mom and dad were sitting there, with my sisters watching me play. It was so cool, that I butchered the lead break smh. Nobody even noticed, but I became nervous, and I had to calm myself down. Believe it or not, I turned my back to the audience and told the percussionist that my sisters brought my parents to see me play. Now we're laughing and the drummer, and Bass player/ lead singer have no idea why, but they start laughing too smh!! That was one of the best nights of my life. My mom and dad never heard me play, with a band. They told me how proud they were of me. Up until that night, I never identified myself as a musician. I'm sorry, Tyler. I didn't mean to write a novel, but all four of the people who were at that show, to see, and hear me play, are no longer with us. I miss them dearly. I'm so glad that my parents were able to witness the end result of, what began as a bunch of noise. I still have the guitar that I bought that day. It's a Peavey T-60 lead, which is hilarious by it's own merits. I believe it's a 70s model. Serial number is 001973, and I named it Dolores, because if it wasn't for her gentle voice telling me to keep playing, I wouldn't have continued to hack away at it. BTW, Tyler. I hope and pray that your father, and everyone who helped you on your journey is somehow blessed, recognized, acknowledged, and loved. 🤘✌️❤️🎸

Easy one to get right. All the gain all the time!! Ha ha ha ha, just kidding. But seriously, I was told by a great musician to do the following to get the very best out of your amp, no matter what it is: Turn all knobs/dials to 10 or max and then do the same on your guitar, strum a chord or even just hit a string, and then slowly turn them down until you start finding that magic zone. Then either go analog and take a marker or something to make a mark on the amp where those settings are, or take a phot with your phone of all the settings, amp and guitar. Now you have the start of a great tone for your set-up. Do this with any pedals you have too. If it doesn't sound good with pedals, re-arrange the order they are in and try again. Rinse and repeat until you have "your" sound. Happy playing and experimenting. Oh, and if you are like me, you will do this with every guitar and amp and pedal you own, and notice how different they all sound. Loads of fun.
