I've always found Dijkstra's death to be a low point of the game. Not that I had a problem with killing him, but to have him die in such a unceremonious way seams underwhelming. A pivotal character like him in both the game and the books deserves at least a cutscene death.

Exactly. This guy was smart and knew not to mess with Geralt, come on what the hell was he thinking trying to kill Geralts buddies in front of him? At least do it when geralt is out of sight. Peasants killed Geralt. They are specialized monster hunters. You mustn't put Geralt on a pedestal before remembering that they are still humans, just evolved. Their magics are mere parlor tricks, but exceptionally useful for a shrewd fighter in one on ones or to confuse/disorient another. They are not really capable of killing with these tricks. A group of soldiers would very much cause problems for a Witcher. They have tactics and formations that a Witcher is not trained in. But since it's a game, AND because there are soldiers on your side as well (Roche is a very, very seasoned fighter), it becomes a balanced fight. Make no mistake, I am not saying a normal soldier could kill Geralt easily in any way, form or fashion. However surround a Witcher, even Geralt, and mere peasants with pitchforks can kill Witchers. Peasants did lay waste to Kaer Morhen, after all. Multiple Witchers and Witcher-apprentices present. Still lost.

@@Catonzo They're way above normal human, their movements are described as too fast to be perceived with naked eyes, and they can parry a crossbow bolt, a freaking crossbow bolt ! a quick google search will show you a medieval crossbow bolt can reach up to 300 fps which is faster than most modern supercars, deflecting a 1/2 inch target coming at you at such speed is definitely superhuman level feat Witcher's signs are mere parlor tricks only when compared to a full blown sorcerers magic arsenal, just like how our igni is a very watered down version of Triss's fireblast or Aard to Keira's telekinetic blast. They are still lethal to kill some paltry humans and geralt lets his guard down when that peasant boy killed him, a mistake that he will surely not repeat now once he is older and ripened with age dijkstra wouldn't have done such brazzen attack like this, he is a fucking spy, he can assassinate them quietly and mask it as some kind of accidents or whatnot, this is just an example of bad writing
@Catonzo5 жыл бұрын
@@Ariel24K First of all, I never said that a Witcher isn't above a normal human. However there are exceptional humans that defeated Witchers - or at least claimed to have killed them and collected their medallions. This character in the books would be Leo Bonhart. His achievement is questioned, but being questioned doesn't mean it's automatically false. And even if he were to have assassinated them, that is in itself a HUGE achievement given their immeasurably heightened senses and near immunity to poison. Second, a 300fps isn't impossible to be seen by the naked eye. 0,1 second for the bolt to reach ~10 meters is not impossible to react to, especially if it's predicted. Deflecting it, however, is nigh impossible for a regular human and I am not going to take such away from their skills. And yes, the pitchfork to the gut is a result of him with his guard down, but that is also proof of being human, if mutated and extremely strong. I do consider it a bad thing that they made Djikstra willing to kill all of them, but it is not impossible for a band of soldiers to kill Geralt. That he defeated them in the game is obviously for story progression.. not because it was a given for any situation. Otherwise it's just as much 'lore' that a single Drowner manages to kill Geralt because we let our arthritic 90 year old grandparent play the game.
@Ariel24K5 жыл бұрын
@@Catonzo obviously during several hundreds of years of witcher's existance there are those that fell by the hands of mere humans, yes, but some trickery is usually on play, remember Gaetan ? and Kiyan, as well as Aiden, all three witchers got tricked in a way and i believe Bonhart must have tricked the witcher's he killed. And i dont think witcher's are near immune to poisons, Geralt still cant brave poisonous gas under Dijkstra's lair. Its not impossible for a group of soldiers to kill Geralt, yes but its also not the smartest solution to an end, and Dijkstra should've known that. Dijkstra doesn't even bring that many men, how many was it ? 8 ? 9 ? 10 at most ? Geralt along with Roche Ves and Thaler wouldn't have any trouble whatsoever against such few mens, i'd reckon to overwhelm them you'll need at least 20 with multiple crossbowmen from differrent angles, even then such brutish tactic is really not in-character for Dijkstra

And to push further the comparison (even if "comparison" is not right), aside from his mafia side, Dijkstra is almost like De Gaulle, whose detractors said he was a stealth resistant to London and who will finally appear as the providential man who cleared France of Petain (Radovid) and found "the greatness of France" (Téméria) against the Nilfgaard (Nazi Germany) I know, I push the cap a lot, but it's just to make it clear that the choice "Dijkstra" is quite defensible in the end if we transpose the situation outside the game. The whole reason Geralt becomes involved is to help those closest to him (Yennefer, Ciri and Triss). Nilfgard doesn't treat mages well so handing the north to Ehmyr goes against his goals. Roche kept this from him because he knew Geralt would object. He betrayed Geralt and the whole north so Temeria could become a vassal state. Dijkstra is right in this regard, it was a shitty deal. Ultimately Geralt's intentions are clear. He wants to help mages. Dijkstra offers the best future for them since he acknowledges their importance and wants to form alliances with them. I hated letting Roche and Ves die but its not as if Geralt killes them. He just choses to be neutral and walk away. He said himself that when choosing between two evils its better to not chose at all.

WARNING! Few spoilers ahead, regarding the future plans of some of the important characters. For those who still, after 5 years, didn't finished this game at least once, although I don't know why anyone in his right mind wouldn't have done it by now... Anyway, to the point. I partially agree with you, but consider this: Emhyr doesn't treat mages well, but on the other hand, he isn't organising witch hunts, imprisoning and burning them alive. Except Fringilla, but not because she's a mage but for reasons of personal betrayal. And he obviously can be reasoned with, provided he needs their services... Radovid is dead, that was the whole idea and it was done. If you ask mages about their opininons (for you've taken them as a focal point in this decision), Phillipa is plotting to be a Ciri's advisor, provided Ciri ends up "sharing" Nilfgaard throne with Emhyr. Yen decided to part with politics and find a quiet, cozy spot for her and Geralt when everything is over... But knowing Yen and her inclination to tamper with politics, if she didn't, she'd be probably, if nothing, at least considering to serve Emhyr. Even Ciri could be persuaded to stand by Emhyr's side, if you wish to guide her to that ending, and she, of all, has the best reason of all to hate his guts. My point - kings die, kingdoms fall, borders shift, politics change, one day mages can be in the mercy of their rulers, very next day that can change. So, in that whole political mess, and kings - mages relations that are being constantly changed all over the Continent, loyalty and care (of Roach and Ves towards Geralt), are one of the few constants one can find around. Are you willing to walk away and leave them to their demise purely for the sake of Dijkstra's visions of greatness, that could, one day, very well, bite him on his ass? They sacrificed their lives for the safety of Ciri. Fighting a vastly superior enemy. And Ciri's safety and getting rid of wild hunt is the ultimate goal. Speaking of their willingness to fight wild hunt alongside Geralt, wouldn't you think they'd be ready and willing to fight the black ones to protect her again?
@bolg8922 жыл бұрын
Nilfgaard treats them significantly better than Radovid's Redania would've. Not to mention, just put Ciri on the throne and there will be peace lol.

@Machina31232 жыл бұрын
Geralt has never wanted to be involved in politics. I don’t think he would care about who rules the land as long as his friends and family are safe. Therefore, my takes on this quest are 1. He chose to kill Radovis to ensure the survival of mages and, to some degrees, non-human friends while avenging those killed before (the alchemist from tw1) 2. Roche and Ves went through hell with Geralt in TW2. Furthermore, they risked their necks against the Wild Hunt. They even accepted to fight along side Letho because Geralt had asked them. 3. Thaler helped Geralt, to some degrees, in TW1 4. Sigi only provided Geralt money (at best) to fight against the Hunt. Nothing guaranteed that he would not act against Geralt friends when he became king. 5. The Emperor, despite being a villain, did show some moderate tolerance to mages and give vassal states certain levels of independence (Toussaint). Furthermore, he did keep his words about Ciri. From one father to another, Geralt had some reasons to trust Emyr more than Sigi, who poke his nose in anythig Geralt had done. I still think we all know the clear choice here. A stupid quest though.

Even though I personally have some criticism about this quest, there really isn't a way you can win here. Either save your friends and hand the North to Nilfgaard, or let Dijkstra win and the North is ruled by Redania ( Dijkstra mentions he will unite ALL the North), which, under Dijkstra is just a re-colored Nilfgaard. Or you leave things as they are and Radovid just burns everyone he doesn't like. Really this quest doesn't have a good ending :(

And they died without a second thought. So how on earth has this suposedly clever man, not rounded up an entire army for Geralt alone...? Dijkstra, biggest dumbass of all

althought it was an a-hole move to betray his supposed allies, Dijkstra still had a very good point; letting an opposing army take all of the other territories in order to end the war was poor military decision. i would imagine that that truce would be short lived. all of the forces of the north would coagulate into one army, and eventually launch an overwhelming attack on Temeria, and conquer that as well.

I come back to this vid when the franchise is back in my mind. It’s insane how few people played Witcher 2. If you thought THIS was an easy choice, then you’re missing out. I have to wonder what Dijkstra's plan originally was. What was he supposed to get out of the deal made with the emperor? I mean Roche and Thaler wanted Temeria to become a vassal state, but Dijkstra wouldn't have really cared about that unless there was something to be gained. What was his original motive for joining them in the first place? was it only because he hated Radovid enough to want him dead? or did he always have an ulterior motive? It wasn't until Geralt told him about guilds not being happy with the Emperor that he changed the plan, and decided to act against them. Or did he always plan to betray them and take over for himself? That's the part that confuses me. Dijkstra brought Geralt in on the conspiracy to kill Radovid. We find out that Thaler was returning from negotiations when Geralt saved him from the trolls. Dijkstra was part of those negotiations as well. When Geralt told him that the Emperor was having internal problems of his own, Dijkstra seemed surprised by this revelation, but then decided to take advantage. So it really makes me wonder what Dijkstra wanted out of this deal before Geralt gave him that information. Was he hoping to gain favor with Emperor? or did he just want to stop the war as he stated to Geralt before that war solves nothing.

One of the few stupid moments in the game. There's no way Dijkstra would be dumb enough to try and kill people that Geralt holds dear right in front of him and expect him to just walk away. He should've just offered Roach and the others the same deal Emhyr did - a free Temeria as a vassal state of the united north. That way it wouldn't have seemed like a dumb ultimatum. No idea what the writers were thinking here.

This was the most difficult decision for me in all of W3 But nobody fuqs with my ploughing Thaler! Roche is neutral towards Geralt and says so that while he likes him, he wouldn't hesitate to cut him down if he were to get in his way. Whereas Thaler is actually a true bro to Geralt and even shows he gets conflicted about his craft as a spy and his liking of Geralt. He would love to tell Geralt intelligence but then he would fail in being a professional; something that Geralt completely understands as he strives to be a professional in his witcher craft. Thaler is with Geralt in all 3 games. W2 he sends a spy lackey due to Geralt being a fugitive of Temeria. But the P.S. in the letter shows his enderament Thaler style. An unlike Roche, Thaler never doubted Geralt. Thaler in W1 is what Roche is to W2 in fact I feel Roche came to be created to fill the place of Thaler. However, due to the fact that Thaler can't leave, because he is the master of intelligency in Temeria; he can't be by Geralt's side-like say a secret commando unit, hence the Blue Stripes. Still Roche proves likeable in W2 (Iorveth proves better as he mellows out a bit through Geralt "friendship" Roche doesn't develop as a character)

I think a lot of people didn’t understand Dijkstra’s sudden decision. Dijkstra doesn’t want the North to be a puppet of Nilfgaard while Roche and co just want Temeria back. Plus Sigi talked with Philippa that must have told him that sharing the North with Temeria would make him in an even weaker position. He did tell everybody that Phil has inspired him. Inspired him to fight. And don’t forget that the lady sorceress wins in all situations: 1) The one Phil thinks will happen, Geralt kills Dijkstra and then Nilfgaard wins and she becomes Ehmyr’s sorceress (more like Ehmyr becomes Phil’s little emperor) with no opponent to face. 2) Geralt doesn’t do anything, Dijkstra wins and she can still use him in the worst scenario. I believe he is still a bit in love (and I understand him!). That’s why I think this scene isn’t bad at all. I’m just very sad that Dijkstra has to die.
