*The characters in old video games* --- > They showed belonging to different cultures, with contrasting mentalities and customs, giving a Real feeling of Travel, adventure and discovery in a Very DIVERSE World. *Characters from current video games* --- > It doesn't matter if they try to look like Vikings, Samurai, Elves or Martians, they ALL behave like rich communist californians who get offended by Everything while drinking soy milk at a Starbucks.

Back when the good writers still worked at Bioware. Characters with flaws and beliefs of their own instead of marching in lock step with current thing

Sten was a fine comrade, his conversations were alright, but MY GOD was he annoying to have in a party since there are a ton of things he will disagree with you doing~ which quickly puts him in a hating disposition of you, and good luck being a rogue or mage with him on your team.

one thing I love about origins and dragon age 2 and even inquisition you can literally change your companions belief but in veilguard you can't you got accept it no matter what like they force you to like it like the dev knew most of us would change taash to since she go by them/they,

If we are being real very few, if any, women could ever properly move, let alone fight, in full plate and wield a zweihander. Size and strength become extremely important when armour is involved. You can train a woman for dueling or "streetfighting" but actual war involves a lot of marching under heavy loads, sleeping in harsh conditions and the use of heavy armor. Women are generally not nearly as good as men at handling this.

It is interesting that they realized it would be possible to finish Hearts of Stone, before finishing the main story. Going by memory, but I believe you'd have to get to that point in Hearts of Stone, just after the Battle of Kaer Morhen in order to take advantage of the advice. Doable, but on a first time playthrough (not game+)that would be kind of tough. Just the Toad Prince and that blasted Oferian mage would be tough at that point. I hate that mage! lol

It's so interesting that in some ways Sten and Taash are both Qunari who have trouble seeing from another point of view, but Sten comes off as much more palatable somehow. Even though he's saying things like "You can't possibly be right" and "You don't make any sense to me," it's feels fundamentally different compared to Taash. There is a sense that he is speaking for himself to you as a character within this world, commenting on the rules that exist within this world, which you as a player can choose to extend to the real world if you wish, but you don't have to. Whereas Taash comes off as much more overbearing, and her comments aren't really about herself or the world she is in but actually directed at the player's world. She is almost constantly reminding you of the real world and real world problems when quite frankly, people play these games to escape the real world for a while. We appreciate the parallels mainly because that's still through the lens of another world that we are temporarily seeking refuge in, but they're supposed to be incidental and primarily placed to enrich the game world, not commentate on the real one. It's much more grating to hear her say "You're wrong" because this feels personal now, whereas Sten's "You're wrong" is merely within the constraints of the game. He also comes across as more humble; he starts off with "I don't understand." He's not the most articulate, and I wouldn't even say he's necessarily MORE articulate than Taash, even, at least not all the time, but he's clearly coming from a place of humility, whereas Taash is much more overbearing about her position.

I got this ending. Not only was it the first time I felt disappointed about something that happened in a video game, but I was legitimately disturbed. It felt so personal... What's worse, the ending is actually kind of ambiguous... The game lets you just sit there with your thoughts, in a state of disbelief about what happened... After all that, Ciri is gone? WHAT?! On top of that, apparently EVERYTHING else got ruined as well: people got burned, tyrants ruled the world... and even Geralt dies. STOP. The whole thing even made me reflect on my own life decisions (yes, it gets even sadder). At the same time, guess that's to the credit of the game and its writing. Ironically, I had restarted the game once already, at the very beginning, because I was so disappointed that I failed the quest about giving the herbalist's daughter that potion in one of the first quests. Now imagine playing through the whole main story to realize it was all for nothing. TRAGIC.

Its interesting to see how tight the dialogue and worldbuilding is in Dragon Age (previously) because in Inquisition, the term Qun-Athlok was used (for Krem) as someone who was born one gender then identifies as another. Its cool how even with that much later addition to Qun lore, it doesn't retroactively invalidate Sten's confusion because of how literally he speaks. He genuinely wants to know if HoF is male despite clearly being female physically because that would make it easier for him to understand why she fights, and he would question it less if she said she was male. And thats a testament to how strong the writing was, happy accident or no, that such a later change can retroactively fit within the parameters of a prior characters mannerisms and culture. Maybe not perfectly, but it goes to show how much time and energy went into making these cultures and peoples as robust as possible. God I miss this IP, I wish we got a new one, that would've been nice.
