For me, Velen was the most relatable region in Witcher 3. Just people trying to get by, amidst all the darkness and uncertainty. Also, during sundown you would get these absolutely gorgeus views from the plains and small hilltops. Wish I could go back and experience the game again for the first time , not a single game has come even close to Witcher 3 in the way it captured me.

@dugeor Your comments are really interesting to me. It's fascinating that how a game is advertised directly affected your experiences in-game. Like if your favorite cereal came out with a bad commercial and then suddenly you don't like how it tastes. Personally Im glad the series became more popular and the people that worked hard on everything got extra visibility and $$$, especially my pole brother sapkowski. But def understand we all have our own perspectives. I read all the Witcher books too, and found them to give me similar feelings as when I was playing the Witcher games. I think when you take any book and try to put it into diff media (games, TV, movies) it can never be a 1:1 replica. But if the feeling is captured, then the magic is there imo. I don't know you and I'm prob wrong here, but it feels like what you're really trying to say is "the people that like Witcher 3 are simps, they're not real Witcher fans. Im a real Witcher fan because I like Witcher 1 the most and I knew about the Witcher before all the 3 fans. also I read the books." Except in a less direct way. But like I said, I could be way off.

SPOIL: After having "finished" the bloody baron's quest where his daughter no longer wanted to see him and his wife had become a monster, I thought that this story was not finished and that I still had a lot of things to do. So I come back to the Baron to collect my dues, eager to see what happens next. And “reality” caught up with me. Brutally as she likes to do it. It started with a fade to black, announcing the start of a cutscene, then the legs of a body hanging from a tree. I naively told myself that it was the baron who had again taken these nerves out on his people, but no. The next image left no doubt. The barron had hanged himself, unable to accept the consequences of my choices. And there, the avalanche of emotion in my stomach. Denial, shock, sadness, then acceptance. Repeating in different orders. Thus making me understand that I had become attached to a character that I did not appreciate. I experienced it as a little trauma. I sometimes have the image of the Baron's lower body, hanged, which comes to mind at inopportune moments. Then a feeling of oppression. Since then, listening to music number 3 (3:46) is an emotional ordeal, which surprisingly I enjoy experiencing. It totally reflects the Velen region. And every time, at 4:13 I seem to hear the Baron crying and lamenting, in the last seconds before hanging himself. Feeling my own periocular muscles contract, as if to stop me from crying. And it's in these moments that I tell myself that The Witcher 3 had an impact on me like no other game has yet. Nor even like any other non-musical work for that matter. Long live video games, long live The Witcher 3.

I both hated and loved Velen for that sinking feeling in my chest I got whenever I passed by it and for giving me one of the most unforgettable experiences in a video game. I definitely feel more of the latter now that I haven't touched the game in a year and get to enjoy the music on its own. Also, am I the only one who didn't feel that sorry for the Baron? While I believe in second chances and didn't want him to end up dead, I'd rather choose to give the children a chance at life rather than the man who (if I remember correctly) beat his wife and made his family feel unsafe enough to plan an escape. Maybe it's because I'm a woman myself and I've seen too many real life cases where husband have dealt their wives a lifetime of trauma only to lament about how hurt they are when they face the consequences of their actions. Of course, it's also important to understand how cultures and inherited trauma affect these individuals, but it's never an excuse. Anyways, I'm getting too deep for a KZbin comment here, but that just goes to show how much life the writers have breathed into these characters to affect us so deeply. I love this game so much!
@FatKitty665 ай бұрын
Great comment, I was about to say that The Witcher gives us so much reflection upon various (mostly tragic) situations and complex characters, confronts us with our conscience and deepens us into ethical dilemma, broadens horizon... Valuable enrichment I'd say
@FatKitty665 ай бұрын
Baron's case is so difficult to jugde, I can't condamn him completely, but also don't wanna justify his horrible actions, I just don't see him as totally evil, black character, it's all so much not black-white, anyway I get your point of view (also woman here). To me he seems to have some good, he really helped and befriended Ciri afterall, was emotionally damaged because of all wars and battles he had taken part in and his wife cheated on him, but he had no right to be so cruel and extremely abusive towards her, it's reasonable that she (and daughter) escaped and hated him

When i first played this game, i hated Velen so much that I didn’t care to understand what’s going on in it. But after 4 playthroughs It became my favorite area in the main game, yes even better than Skillege. Sure there’s beauty in all areas but Velen was the best, like there’s almost a personality in this area, perhaps it has a personality. There’s a sense of Desperation, loneliness, fear and evil in Velen, truly a No Man's Land. I think all areas are great in their own way but Velen captured these feelings perfectly. My second favorite area is Toussain of course. That area is the exact opposite and i think that’s why i love them.

For those who haven't read it but would like to experience something similar to the atmosphere of Velen, I recommend the short stories by Andrzej Sapkowski, which inspired the Witcher game: "The Last Wish" (7 stories) and "Sword of Destiny" (also 7 stories, I believe). These have been translated into enlish but also other langs.
