What is the scoia'tael? In this video I try my best to explain the history of the scoia'tael. I will go over prominent members and their history, the scoia'tael's effect on the witcher games, Iorveth, Isengrim Faoiltiarna, Yaevinn, Toruviel and many other members! A quick disclaimer - A lot of these videos use information from the witcher wiki, in some cases I do read directly from the pages, I do always make sure to include my own thoughts and other information I know myself, but I just want to make sure everyone is on the same page here. Even though I use information from the wiki, I do still create the videos, with time, effort and a lot of editing! The idea behind the lore videos is to present to information to you guys in a fun and more interesting way then you guys having to get the information from pages and read it yourself. I have a soft spot for the Elves in any universe, in which they nearly always seem to be the elder race and Witcher world is not an exception - this derives from the ancient European mythologies, actually. That's one reason why I let them be whenever I encounter any. Scoia'tael lifestyle may seem very brigand like for some, but I cannot say it's entirely unjustified.

Honestly if I was in the Witcher universe, I'd support the Scoia'tael despite being a dh'oine, I's be like the "Hurk" of the Scoia'tael, and call them "Homie" a lot :P Also if you don't know who Hurk is, he's this dude who helps the player out in Far Cry 3 and 4. Alos Iorveth is a badass, both him and Geralt! :3

it's unfortunate that you do not put subtitles, English is not my mother tongue so I find it difficult to understand the oral. I feel a mixture of love and pity for non-humans in general because they are really close to extinction. that is why I always supported the Soia'tael, it will be their salvation ... or their doom. in addition, what humans have done (and what they continue to do) is really horrible.

It's funny the elves in The Witcher both books and games were ment to serve as a deconstruction of Tolkien elves but even now they can be a deconstruction of elves from fantasy settings that came after the books. Like Dragon age where everyone os racist towards elves and the elves who reject living in the city to live in the forest are feared. In the Witcher most pesants don't really care outside of a few drunks and handfull or racists and the Scoia'tael are basically just homeless Larpers who get demolished when faced with even a small group of soldiers.

I'm not sure it's fair to say that, look at animals, there is not one species on Earth that does not fight its own kind for any reason. conflict is part of life, one might even think that it is an important part of it. But I agree that no other species has sown as much destruction as humans.

How many times have you seen or heard of an Elf killing another Elf? How many times have you seen or heard of a Dwarf killing another Dwarf? How many times have you seen or heard of a Human killing another Human? -An animal only kills another animal simply by a natural process in its survival instinct, that is not the same as killing someone just for greed, ambition, personal desires, etc... -Simply.., if they are compared, humans kill each other, or other species the 99% of the time, while members of other species try to kill each other at the most the 1% of the time. -So.. definitively.., humans are by far the most self-destructive species that exists, especially.., whether in their killings or not in these, they also destroy part of the environment in the process, which also brings them in one way or another to their own destuction & also to the other species along with them.

for the Ancient Races, I do not really know, no conflict is ever mentioned because their archives, their history was practically destroyed during the war, we do not know how they lived before the Conjunction, nobody ever talks about it except to say that this is where humans and monsters appeared (detail that humans often forget I find) but we know that they sometimes clash as when the Scoia'tael attacked a convoy of gold of Foltest composed mainly of dwarfs in the books. Besides, I have an example ... two actually, I think about it now: in TW2, in the 2nd chapter, way of Iorveth, E'leyas, his second, killed young men because they were the lovers of a Succubus to whom he had developed an obsession, Humans AND Elves. And the blacksmiths runes of the Dwarves killed his master to appropriate his secrets. (By the way, I find the quest for E'leyas ridiculous: where did he found the time, when his unit has just arrived in Vergen, to copulate with a Sucube, become obsessed and kill several people in just a few days?) so you see, it's unpleasant but Non-humans are no different from humans on this point. And then there is Loc muinne, where we have the suspicion that it was the Elves who massacred the Vrans of the city to appropriate it. no proof, of course, but the suspicion is there. an animal that kills another animal? are you kidding there? it happens every day of every month of every year. you think a cat catches a mouse to cuddle? so yes humans are undoubtedly the worst, the most destructive but to say that it only happens to us, that it is specific to our nature is wrong and unfair.

Never liked the Scoia'tail. I thought it being in the books and the games kind of racist, but I know it was important for the plot of course and it did have some cool characters but I think spakwoski could've done a better job if he just made them legit Rebels and not terrorists. I mean we get to see them commit unspeakable atrocities through out the wars but if you take a point of view from there side they literally didn't have any choice in it all. I prefer to call them liberators not terrorists, which Andreaj unfortunately made them look. Anyway I loved the video like always so thanks.

I think Iorveth is right in many things. If Scoiatael were allowed to live peacefully in Dol Blathanna after war, there would be no need for them to fight in the woods anymore. But they were not, so hiding is the only option for them because everyone wants them dead for their past crimes. By choosing to ally with Saskia, Iorveth just wanted a new chance of peace for Scoiatael members

Wish that hjalmar or cerys would realize the potential of granting the scoia tael one of the unoccupied islands of the archipelago as their own (kinda like nilfgard promised) and have them swear to the defence of skellige. Skellige, evidently, once had elf inhabitors. It may be cold, and unforgivin land, but an island is a hard border, a defined land. Skellige have great marine skill, but lack in land to land battles. The scoia tael could... soften up, the enemy before any fighting begin. The skellige jarls might object if it isnt presented properly, but if the military advantage is presented in... an non-dishonorable way, I think noome would object in giving them an island.

isengrim was supposed to be on the side of dijikstra so it makes sense for scoiatael to join him. in order to stop their rebilion he would just let them settle in dol blathanna or vergen thats all. once again nilfgaard stole their chance to live peacefully with humans in vergen. dijikstra killed them because they wanted to sell every northren country including redania. as for tes i prefer dunmers and i hate their empire as well. tamriel belongs to the dunmers. their empire steal their wealth and rob merchants and has a lot of corruption like bribes and so on. in skyrim i don't like both sides.

​@@efaristi9737 i think it would take away from the "story telling" aspect a bit, make it a bit sandbox-ish/elder scrolls-ish. And also it would be unbalanced a bit, a normal human guy can't possibly fight monsters, basically the witcher world would be a horror game if you would play as a regular human, even if you are a soldier kinda type you would probably die to a few drowners or something. Maybe if you can only be the "elite" of the said faction, like special commando unit as warrior or something, but still a witcher or a mage could just slaughter a pretty group of your class. Story telling would also become a bit problematic, like they would have to make basically different games for each (like a human flaming rose knight doesn't really have much in common with a scoia'tael archer lol and your average witcher has nothing in common with either of the two) So i think the best option in terms of character creation would be is to have a witcher as a class but you could chose your school which would basically give you a "class". Like wolf school witchers are basically the warrior/spellsword with some amount of magic archetype (the balanced ones) Cat school would be more "rouge-ish" Griffin would be more knight-ish/paladin-ish Bear could be straight up warrior/barbarian. Viper could maybe go for the assassin-ish type with twin blades. (similar to the cat but more on the line of poison, twin blades, bombs, while the cat could be more "mercenary" type with longsword, crossbow etc) This way your character could have a semi pre-rendered personality and voice, and the game could have a better more polished storyline this way while leaving you some freedom to personalize your character. i think this would be the best of both worlds.

​@@efaristi9737 I think to me atleast your last point is exactly what would make a better game, so the game could tell a story more consistently. Though i like your idea of "creat your own character from scratch" i've always had a problem with my character feeling more "empty"/no real personality. I don't mind it in other games too much where the point is only to explore and run around like the elder scrolls series, but to me it would cease to be a witcher game. it would be a cool "spinoff" kinda game but wouldn't call it "the witcher". Also i'm afraid that it would mean the storyline would be much shorter, since you can't give all the characters the same storyline (same as i said above, an order knight, a witcher, a scoia'tael, and a mage have nothing in common in their goals/life/etc mostly.) I know you wouldn't mind as you stated, but i think most players (or atleast i would) would mind. I agree with the fact that humans can take down monsters, but i highly doubt any game with give you a squad all the time. And running into a griffin while you try to explore or packs of drowners would be a pain in the ass imo. Though for some i reckon it could add to the immersion. So i guess if done correctly it could be cool to try and run and hide from monsters like in a "horror game" style. Or it could be solved more-less with having some kind of companion system implemented like the whole game would be about group traveling together, like Geralt's hanza in the books. That way i guess you could have different roles in the said group. (bit dragon age style i guess though but it could work i think) Rogue-rouge, 'cuz i can't fuckin' write lol English is not my native, though i know the difference between the two words but i fuck it up at every possible chance i get lol. All in all it's pretty much doable if the game has a well implemented group/hanza system or something, actually it might even be cooler/more "bookish" that way, not sure. Though i would still prefer to have a well written character as the main character. and as well written storyline (and length) of the previous game. So i guess the best option imo would be to have a witcher as a main character but with the hanza system where you could make choises like you either have a knight of the order in your group or a scoia'tael archer etc and it would have consiquences later on blabla. you get the idea.

I love the scoia'tael, I wish they had a bigegr part in Witcher3, I do understand their struggles and fight, I simpatize with their goal but I don't make excuses for all of their actions and ways of doing things. And how they often let themselves be politically used. I understand what made them do it and while Iorveth is one of the coolest characters in all saga and one of my fave, he is also a mass murderer of many guilty but also many innocent people. and is also feared and detested by many nonhumans too for that reason. so I'm really torn but yeah definitely have a soft spot for him/them. He's right in many things and some of his speeches give me chills, but he's not right in blaming all on humans, Elves alike have a history of racism towards other species and concerning and slaughtering other species too..

I do not think they would throw humans into the sea, when they landed in the world after the conjunction, it is said that they lived peacefully with other species for a few centuries (I think). It was when humans multiplied and began to need larger territories that things got worse.

I watched a string of youtuber Cianurr who read the books and make great videos on the universe The Witcher. And he says that indeed the Elves and the other Ancient Races had at least a short period of conflict at the beginning and then peace settled because they did not live in the same environment and far enough from each other . The Dryads do not seem to have been mistreated by the Elves, if that was the case, knowing the character of Eithnné, we would know quickly, the queen of Dryads forgives nothing. In addition, the Elves did not even attack the Humans when they arrived on the continent, their relations were very peaceful at the beginning also because the Elves liked a lot to sleep with them. it differentiates them a lot from Aen Elle. So if there was a conflict, I think it was because they were very different.

Scoia'tael aren't a culture but a army of diverse non-humans commando who have enough to be treated like shit and want to fight back. they are kind of a bit like terrorists and freedom fighters. The elves on the other hand are indeed a bit like the elves of DA: Some get assimilated and live in humans cities and others have chose exile in the woods and mountains and still live according to their traditions. but unlike the Dalish, they didn't lost their cultures and knowledges. The elves in the cities never fully integrate into humans societies, clinging to their culture, and the Free Aen Seidhes keep to themselves, even from their assimilated kin.

With the books I never really had any sympathy for the Elves but yes, a proper hell for them, first used as puppets by the Nilfgaardian powerhouses, when the war was lost they were sold out and betrayed by both Nilfgaard and the Elf leadership (Fransesca) while progroms were ongoing in the northern kingdons.... gegen sw human racism towards non-humans is not new, it may have been less important before but it existed. Hatred between humans and non-humans does not come out of nowhere and has existed for a long time for solid reasons. There is a codex in TW2 that mentions golems and how the first was built after a pogrom and it was well before the war. I'm pretty sure the books also suggest that nonhuman abuse by humans is not new, I remember a passage where a knight (Redanian, I believe) pointed out how the kingdoms had to deal with vermin non-human. Certainly, but it is better to sacrifice a part of his people than the totality, Dol blathanna still has the hope to continue. in witcher 2? you mean in the books? otherwise I'm sure she has nothing to do with it, she probably did not encourage it anyway. I doubt that Enid An Gleana is stupid to think that the only important thing is that she can reign over a small kingdom ... especially if this kingdom ends up losing its population.

And what would you have wanted her to do? that she resists the Emhyr? so they would all be dead, young and old, the Elves could not resist humans at a time when they all dominated the continent and humans were less organized, so Dol Blathanna would have had absolutely no chance against the empire. scoia'tael were the main reason humans didn't trust elves and other nonhumans. Humans dwarves and elves all lived amongst each other in every witcher game I have played. Many even own businesses within most towns so I feel like the discrimination and lack of trust from the humans was much more justified when there were these crazy fanatics murdering and kidnapping not even sparing women and children in the first witcher. I felt like the scoia'tael were more the cause of the issues that they were fighting for than the humans. At least imo.

Not exactly, Humans distrusted non-humans long before the war. Of course, not all of them, it varies from a individual to another, cities, states... But pogroms were still a thing before the wars and it's not rare that non-humans have to pay more taxes than humans. If you have played the games, then you had to see that the cohabitation between humans and non-humans wasn't always easy. The Scoia'tael is a result of it, not a cause. But their actions did make things worses. In season of storm, way before the wars, the new king expulsed all the non-humans from his kingdom and confiscated their posessions so you can't say they were all living in peace and harmony. There is also the fact that elves resented humans a lot for destroying their realms and forced them to live in their cities. The main problem of the Scoia'tael is that, from the beginning, they weren't fighting for themselves, they were fighting for Nilfgaard.

WitcherGeorge I never quite grasped that ending... a war is a costly affair. Especially if you have a national army. In feudal societies, each lord taxates and equip troops, which results in some disparity depending on funds and ambition. but in nilfgard, it all seems standardized. Meaning the most equipment seem to be funded by the crown, which probably indebted them in some way, or likely starved the population in some way (might be loot, but then they starved the occupied states instead). Causing those expenses, and then just "here, you can have it back" doesnt seem reasonable. They need to heavily taxate the occupied terrotories for some time to cover the deficit in the accounting. Giving the territories back before you have paid for the war? Hoping they continue to send you their taxes? If they stop, you will have double the expenses in taking it back AGAIN. It is just bad from a national economic standpoint. Emhyr should know this, for ploughing a fiends sake, he already know of the animosity at court for less than causing a huge national debt, if this got out of hand, there would be riots.

Had the romanovs managed that, then russia could have still been an empire to this day. If emhyr cannot direct his troops to another front, a profitable one, quickly, then hos massive army will have to be let go. Thousands of troops that havent been home for years. Comming home to their families and fields... that is another sensitive matter. Likely, not all wives have been faithful. Likely, not all farms are still there. Likely, many will not get the greeting they long for. Emhyr might actually have another rebellion on his hands real soon. From the bulk of his battle hardened veterans. Discontent is a dangerous thing.
