When Regis describes Dettlaff's unique ability: "[...] his trump card is his herd instinct, his tribal propencity. He prefers the company of lesser vampires and shuns that of humans." Which would explain why lesser vampires listen to him, and why Dettlaff is so reserved and naiv when acting with humans. And Regis' ability is besides his inteligence his sense of empathy, pointed out by Geralt when first meeting Regis in the DLC. This is the reason he helped Geralt in the books without wanting anything in return, and why he comes to Beauclair in the first place, knowing something is wrong with Dettlaff and that his friend needs him. You should definitely do a character lore video on Regis. Also there’s a *tiny* thing on Dettlaff that you didn’t mention, which was if you talk to Regis right after the blackmailing cutscene in Detlaff’s home, Regis will tell you a bit about his youth and how he gave into peer pressure with blood (this is likely how he became addicted. Akin to that of a teenager becoming addicted to alcohol due to peer pressure) and trying impress his circle of friends and how he was popular. Anyway he mentioned that because of his popularity, he and Dettlaff became acquainted (but eventually their paths diverged) and how Dettlaff didn’t approve of Regis and his friends being childish- “guzzling blood” and “turning into bats to scare ladies”, suggesting that in their youth, he was more mature than Regis and his friends and wasn’t easily swayed due to peer pressure.

A few years out but I suspect that the aim of the story was that there was not one beast, but three. Syanna, Henrietta and Dettlaff. The problem is the canon ending allowed the two biggest beasts to survive without facing the consequences of their actions.
@adamfowler54754 жыл бұрын
Regis early on did point out, rather clearly that Dettlaff was very prone to having harshly dramatic, emotional reactions to painful events. He also specified that Dettlaff was unlearned with the complicated, sinful motives that humans possessed...not understanding the nature of trickery, deception, manipulation, etc...Frankly, I believe this sort of unfortunate ignorance gave Dettlaff a type of ethical/moral pass on his reactive behavior. He was the victim of some truly despicable evil-even worse coming from the only woman he ever loved. Humans act crazy from love I mean....so putting a vampire in this scenario should have catastrophic results.

Robbie Greene exactly. His "alpha" influence is most likely his unique power, especially since Regis put a lot of emphasis on him beaing "beastly" in a way. Additionally, Regis can transform into a bat-like form in the books, so most likely all Higher Vampires have a unique form.

@@WhiteWolf-di2nh May be. A Duchess means she has responsibility.. She can't just send her criminals to a vampire knowing they might die.. Also because Duchess is as much emotional as Dettlaff... Did you ever hear the Tragedy of Dettlaff the Vengeful? I thought not, it's not a story The Witchers would tell you, It's a Toussaint Legend. Dettlaff Van Der Eretein was a Higher Vampire so old and so powerful, he made the King of The Wild Hunt look like child's play. Dettlaff had fallen in love with a human woman, who when she disappeared from his life, he was convinced she was kidnapped. He was greeted with letters telling of her being held hostage and in order to free her, he would have to kill 5 Toussaint nobleman in an act of Vengeance. Little did he know that the kidnapper was his beloved who had used him from the start, in a mad fit of rage he killed her but was soon struck down by Geralt of Rivia and Regis, a Vampire who's life he had saved. Ironic... his most impactful accomplishments was always done because of others, but not for himself.

@WitcherGeorge According to Regis, and I quote him from the game (so I do not know if the books actually deepend this), "Each Vampire has a unique talent. One they hone over centuries. It's precisely what renders us so difficult to classify. Dettlaff's trump card is his herd instinct, his tribal propensity". Talent, as it's not just a personality trait, but a skill. He controls lesser vampires at a much greater degree is what I take from this - not his ability to transform. For all we know, the bat form that Regis can take too is just polymorphism and that he can also take the same form as Dettlaff did because he IS extremly powerful.
@Catonzo6 жыл бұрын
@Abdillah Azhar I think the Unseen Elder(s) is/are just that damn powerful, not a special ability. If Dettlaff had lived long enough to become one, he might have been able to do the same, though even more potent. But it's merely speculation.

Dettlaff I feel was such a gentle soul or rather such a vulnerable soul that suck deception truely hurt him. Look at his other actions. Some random kid gives him an apple. And when he hears the child is slain. He butchered the beast who did it. He’s a toy maker. He spends days building objects that children delight in. He apologizes to Geralt for their first fight. Personally this is a man with a strong sense of honor. Who happens to have a darker predatory nature unfortunately.

I don't get why they couldn't do the Syanna Ribbon route but then after the fight instead of killing Dettlaff they couldn't have either A: Chopped him up into little pieces and then buried him so that in 50+ years he could have regenerated like Regis did while having a good long think about what happened. or B: Lock him up in Tesham Mutna before he recovered and force him to listen to reason. Maybe even sneak Syanna out again to talk without him just jumping ahead to stabbing her. And least these ways Dettlaff didn't have to die.

Nice Video!2 "Good ending..." Hmm a matter of perspective. I think Syanna and Anna Henrietta are twisted brats, who rule or want to rule and were mentally abused by their environment. Due to his childhood, Syanna abused Dettlaff and made him a killer/executioner. The real murder is committed by Syanna. Anna Henrietta put Syannas life beyond all, even the lives of their citizen. Therefore I think letting Syanna die, Henrietta grief over Syanna and let Dettlaff take his revenge is in my eyes the ending which is really good. Regis fate makes this clear in my eyes. The called good ending is really bitter because Syanna is forgiven and held hostage in a golden cage. Having Regis Anathema and force him to kill Dettlaff and let Dettlaff die feels so wrong.

The sheer amount of people who consider a dude getting away with a casual genocide he committed over his spite with one single person a "good ending" is pretty unsettling. Dettlaff's feelings were hurt and he decided the best course of actions was to send vampires to slaughter hundreds of innocents bystanders, snack on orphans etc., and somehow he should not face repercussions because he's le cool fluffy wuffy incel vampire. Jesus Christ. I can see motivations for either condemning or sparing the ducal duo depending on whether you want to be lenient or draconian or whatever you feel like, but I see no reason to let Incelaff get away with a petty genocide.
@Senki2074 жыл бұрын
I find it easier to empathize with the higher vampires of the game than most of its humans. Sure, Dettlaf's done some pretty awful things to humans, but... He's not human. He's a superior species. I mean imagine being stranded in a world full of dogs: the can't talk, live short lives compared to you and are vastly beneath you in terms of intelligence, strength, etc. But one day you rescue a beat-up stray and form a bond with it, then you later learn that it was taken by a pack of savage, wild dogs. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't find it immoral to slay the 'beasts' that took your companion. Sure, dogs can't deceive or blackmail, but you get the allegory. Most people find it hard to empathize with the vampires, well, because we're conditioned to empathize with those we pity (the poor, the hungry, the outcast). Some people find it hard to empathize with rich people as well, just because they can't relate to them as easily.

Regis does have a "True Form" at least in Gwent. It does not look the same, 'Werebat' is the best description. You can see their nature's to a degree within their Feral Form. Look at the teeth and the Ears Regis grows long pointy ears, and his canines and incisors become long and pointed. His nose moves up.. like a bat. Dettlaff has a much more traditional Vampire set of teeth and his ears do not elongate but fold back slightly. He takes on a far more predatory appearance, akin to a big cat or wolves snout. Perhaps all HV have a True Form, but like much about them, each is unique and their own. I say this because we know Regis and Dettlaff are from the same clan. So despite that relation (how significant that may or may not be.) They are still very far from one another. Then we have A and her Bhruxa.

I went to the elder then reloaded doing the fables quest, because as Geralt says.. If such a huge outcry expands, every single higher vampire would be in risk of exposure, and yes, they won't die.. True... But they would be in a huge inconvenience for a long time.. Dettlaff is a great guy, but also a loose Canon.. Maybe not today, but tomorrow he'll be a tool to someone else again or maybe not, but we can't count on him being rational enough...

5 years late because I only just discovered your channel but here's my ideal ending for the DLC: Syanna dies, Dettlaff gets obliterated (not killed, so Regis can take him to the other side of the planet and nurse him back to health. That way Regis isn't shunned by the other vampires). I think they both could deserve to die (but Regis doesn't deserve to get shunned), but for Dettlaff I see him as more redeemable and therefore think another chance far, FAR away could be good. I see him as more redeemable because he shows genuine kindness to people, while Syanna manipulates the kindness of people and was even willing to kill her own sister. It's been a while since I played so I could be remembering wrong (and also didn't finish the video before making this comment so if this was brought up during I'm not aware) but she wanted to kill her sister for something that wasn't her fault on top of everything else. The blood of those who died is just as much on her hands as it is on his, and in my opinion her actions were more monstrous than his because she manipulated his kindness and his love for her, with no remorse. Except for the attacking the whole city thing, that was definitely more monstrous on his part. Honestly, in my opinion, Syanna 100% deserves to die. With Dettlaff, it's less clear. On one hand, he deserves to die too, but on the other, it isn't entirely his fault what happened. She manipulated him, he believed it because he trusted her. He didn't abuse her trust and kindness, he didn't hide true intentions from her, he didn't use her. She did that to him, which makes her worse than only a murderer in my eyes. They are both wrong, but to me she's worse. Everyone sucks kind of situation, hate the endings. Especially the "good" ending

But from a lore standpoint, I want dettlaff to understand that not only has a "human" (originally human) spared and maybe forgave him, but though he had caused trouble, his superiors CAN spare and forgive him. But he should be reminded that what he did put his species in danger, all because of a grudge against a stupid woman. I want to spare dettlaff but I also want him to learn from this mistake.
