No, this is the Protestant way; Henry VIII decimated the English Catholic church to divorce his first, non decapitated wife (stolen from his late older brother, even) so he could marry Anne. Then she allegedly cheated on him and was put to death, if my half asleep brain remembers correctly..?

Wonderful video... At first didn't realize this was the Rudy Vallee orchestra version, since he isn't the singer. But Stanley Holloway or other U.K. versions would not have a U.S. "football" reference to "Army"! Was it the singer or the video-maker who left out the verse in which Henry says he can't tell which wife she is because "you've got your head tucked underneath your arm!"? Other "football" variations after Vallee (1930s) by Kingston Trio (1960s) and Caryl P. Weiss (1980s)

I'm not sure of the date given here because of the reference to Doc Blanchard as a football player. Doc Blanchard would have been 10 years old in 1934. His fame as Army's "Mister Inside" came from his career playing for West Point in 1944-46. It's also odd that there's an American football reference when surely a British football looks more like someone's head and it's a British song. My guess is this recording was made at an event in the 40s when the audience was American troops with the American Expeditionary Force who would have appreciated "Is Army going to win" and the reference to Doc Blanchard.
@mousetreehouse6833
@mousetreehouse6833 15 күн бұрын
My mom used to sing the American version to me... instead of the Army, it was referenced with the US football player, Red Grange, a very fast runner whose nickname was "The Galloping Ghost."

When me and my brothers were in Elementary my brother woke up screaming his head off and we ran to the living room where he had been sleeping and he was crying pointing at an old chair my grandma used to love to sit in. The oldschool ones with floral patterns and he said he had seen a man sitting there with his head tucked underneath his arm like you would do a basketball. We didnt see anything but boy my brother couldn't go back to sleep for the life of him.

In the tower of London, large as life The ghost of Anne Bolyn walks, they declare Poor Anne Bolyn was once King Henry's wife Until he made the headsman bob her hair Ah, yes, he did her wrong long years ago And she comes up at night to tell him so With her head tucked underneath her arm She walks the bloody tower With her head tucked underneath her arm At the midnight hour She comes to haunt King Henry, she means giving him what for Gadzooks, she's going to tell him off for having spilled her gore And just in case the headsman wants to give her an encore She has her head tucked underneath her arm With her head tucked underneath her arm She walks the bloody tower With her head tucked underneath her arm At the midnight hour Along the draughty corridors, for miles and miles she goes She often catches cold, poor thing It's cold there when it blows And it's awfully awkward for the Queen to have to blow her nose With her head tucked underneath her arm Sometimes gay King Henry gives a spread For all his gals and pals and ghostly crew The headsman craves the joint and cuts the bread Then in comes Anne Bolyn to queer the do She holds her head up with a wild war whoop And Henry cries "don't drop it in the soup!" With her head tucked underneath her arm She walks the bloody tower, With her head tucked underneath her arm At the midnight hour The sentries think that it's a football that she carries in And when they've had a few they shout "is Ars'nal going to win?" They think it's Alec James instead of poor old Ann Boleyn With her head tucked underneath her arm With her head tucked underneath her arm She walks the bloody tower With her head tucked underneath her arm At the midnight hour One night she caught King Henry, he was in the canteen bar Said he, "are you Jane Seymour, Anne Bolyn, or Katherine Parr? For how the sweet san fairy ann do I know who you are With your head tucked underneath your arm?"

That's because the axe was seen as a mere tool while the sword was a noble instrument. If I recall, Henry had a special swordsman brought in from France to ensure the execution was quick and 'merciful'.

Good Christian people, I am come hither to die, for according to the law, and by the law I am judged to die, and therefore I will speak nothing against it. I am come hither to accuse no man, nor to speak anything of that, whereof I am accused and condemned to die, but I pray God save the king and send him long to reign over you, for a gentler nor a more merciful prince was there never: and to me he was ever a good, a gentle and sovereign lord. And if any person will meddle of my cause, I require them to judge the best. And thus I take my leave of the world and of you all, and I heartily desire you all to pray for me. O Lord have mercy on me, to God I commend my soul. To Jesus Christ I commend my soul; Lord Jesu receive my soul.
