Well, some of the weirdness comes from other authors coming in adding their own content into it, such as Lancelot. Then some poor sod had to take all of these new additions and make it all make sense within the original Arthurian legend. Yes, the extra weirdness comes from essentially fanfic writers adding onto the Legend.

The second verse is actually from Sonic's perspective, if you really think about it. The second verse is about how the world will come to an end, and tells Merlina "Don't blame for what I have become." As in Sonic is telling her not to blame him for what he's about to do next, because her world has to come to an end, and Sonic has to be the one to make sure that happens.

@@stokilo18 I'm quoting Windii's retranslation, it's a series of more accurate translations for the original japanese dub. The official english dubs unfortunately have dialogue that sometimes sounds off with either the line itself or how the line is acted out. In this case it's the line itself, the other characters in the scene believe sonic keeps standing up because of a knight's chivalry, not fleeing from the enemy. However, sonic keeps standing up because he fully believes this is the right thing to do. Even though this isn't his world he chooses to fight for it until the very end and because of this display of his strong beliefs, he unlocks the power to revive and wield excalibur. The equivalent of requiring strong thoughts and will power to tap into the limitless power of the chaos emeralds.

This song always intrigued me, the main "villain" is trying to preserve the world in eternity because they don't want everything to die, while Sonic is the "hero" trying to take the world to it's course towards eventual end. In that sense, Sonic is technically the real villain of this story, as reflecting in this song.

But here is the problem. She is going to make the world eternal by using the magic of Excalibur’s Scabbard and the Underworld. Sure, the world and its inhabitants will be eternal, but now there are underworld knights and monsters everywhere. The world is full of cursed magic. It’s like the Blood Moon in Zelda. Except that now it applies to both people and monsters. I have played Shadow of War, where the main character is immortal, and fights the never-ending evil of Mordor. It’s not great. As for Sonic being “bad”, he is considered a true knight by the Lady of the Lake, who is a figure of authority on the arts of chivalry.

It sorta hints at that for Sonic, he does say that he might have to become a villain to save the world (in reference to fighting corrupted King Arthur) and he does, he isn't inherently being evil but he is doing things an evil person would do It is similar to Dr Maruki in Persona 5 Royal (Spoilers to The Third Semester to Persona 5 Royal) Dr Maruki is a good man, he wants to help people, to shield them from pain and heartbreak, he is inherently a good guy, a hero BUT he does evil things to get that, using his Persona to blind people from reality, making them believe their truth, their dream, their reality, even if it hurts them, Sumire is a massive example of this, her choices accidentally got her sister Kasumi killed in an accidental accident and Dr Maruki used her to test his power, making her believe she is Kasumi and that Sumire never existed, Dr Maruki took her pain away but without pain, without heartbreak or hardship, she can't get stronger, to become better When Joker and Akechi snap her out of it, she fights them because she was hurting but then she realises that she's only doing what got her sister killed in the first place so she decides to take the hardest path of all Personal growth She stands against Maruki along with Joker and the rest of the phantom thieves In this instance, they ain't fighting to keep humanity safe, they are fighting to free them from a happy world that they wanted and was materialised by Dr Maruki, inherently putting them though pain, hardship and heartbreak which is technically what a villain would want, for the world to be full of pain and hardship and heartbreak But without these things, we can't grow as a person so they defeat Dr Maruki, destroying the false realities of the masses, they will experience pain and sadness but the result They grow as a better person These battles, Sonic and Merlina, The Phantom Thieves and Dr Maruki Isn't a battle of good and evil Right and wrong It's a battle of morality It's a battle between people who want the same thing, to protect people, to save them from pain and sadness

I always thought it would be cool if the final "Dare to fight, dare to fight!" was replaced with "Dare to fight, dare to fight my might!" because of how the way that verse is sung allows for a few extra syllables. It would be a nice way to emphasize Merlina's point of view that she's truly become unstoppable and that the end of the story at her hand is inevitable while also highlighting Sonic's bravery in standing up to her.
