Dear Nicola! I watch this over and over. I never get tired of it! I thought the Evas spent, but there on their second wind! I brought them up from A 410 to A 440 and have been playing London Bridge is Falling Down. I made it into a chuffable concerto and the violin sounds like Sara on Dark Shadows! Its a trip! Thank you for tecomending the Eva Pirazzi green to me! Youve brought me out of the stone age and into the light! Chris E. 6 28 24 u.s.a. your loyal follower. Im so greatful to you!😅

As a classical violinist turned Irish fiddler, this is so refreshing to see! I adopted a new bow hold for my fiddle tunes, but will sometimes go back to a more classical hold for certain tunes. It really is all about the controlled flexibility! Thank you, I'm sending all my students to watch this video!

What I learned today on series 2 bow holds. I had seen a professional violin lady demonstrate bow holds. She left me with the impression that if I had a small hand the pinky could go on left facet just down from top of bow transom. But you have taught no it must perch on top to balance bow. I am confused because my anatomy says beczuse my pinky is short its more comfortable on side just down from top. I will trust you and endeavor to perch pinky on top. I will replay lesson 12:00 pm or 1pm today with the bow. Terrific lesson! I missed this series for last severL months! I can accept your engaged and love your ring. You are my teacher I am so fond of you! See you at 1:00pm with this lesson. My teacher.😅

The Flop is a massive help if you play ANY musical instrument. It's way more valuable than just the first step of your bow hold. I learnt it from my guitar teacher, who explained it by doing The Flop with both hands. Simply stand still, Flop the hands then stop and look at the natural shape that your hands fall into. Your wrist is straight, thumb is straight, fingers gently curved and it's totally relaxed, isn't it? So then keep that totally relaxed feeling (and hold the shape) in your hand and wrist as you slowly lift each arm onto whatever instrument you're playing, a classical guitar, a piano or a violin and both your hands will be in the perfect position.

Encouraging on the "unique hand" concept, thanks. I damaged my hand a couple of years ago and could no longer pinch a mandolin pick properly between thumb & index, so took up the fiddle to continue putting my left-hand knowledge to some use. Found there are many new challenges in holding the bow. But at least they are new!

Great video!! I especially like emphasizing that everyone has a unique bow hold; my first teacher was adamant about finger positions in the bow hold and I actually had to spend time unlearning some of that to progress. I still do the wave and relax from your first video on bow hold sometimes before practicing; its a good way to make sure your hand is relaxed too :)

This is. great.. and. .. I was hoping to show this to some little ones who are just beginning, to back up what I have been teaching them. I've used a lot of the exercises you show, especially at the beginning, and they have been working well (even over Zoom!). Would you consider doing a shorter version without the long words (like utilise or parallel) just showing the initial set up for young beginners, and maybe without the bit where you let go with the right hand, as their fingers are not strong enough for that yet? Also wondered what you think about the method moving the bow hold up towards the balance point at the beginning for smaller children so they find it easier to keep the arm soft. PS. I want that bow! :)

Hi Phil! Nicky will be doing two live sessions on the bow hold at the end of the month for young beginners and we'll see what we can do about a little beginner version of the video. Leave it with us! (The BF Team)

Thanks! Nicky, your bow appears very dark in the area around the frog. Is it dark from many years of practice, or, maybe paint, rosin, or some special coating?
