99% of the time, when an author strays to the reader side of the internet, the result is bad (see Sara Dessen, Lauren Hough). It's the same weird toxic feel as readers attacking other readers for disagreeing with 5 Star Reviews of Popular books (I was called an "illiterate turd monkey" for being meh on Addie LaRue). It's a weird bummer. We're all just beautiful weird book nerds on the internet. There shouldn't be cliques and bullies.

Yeah, it's so weird. Like why create a work- book, song, show, movie- etc, especially a creative one and expect everyone to love it or not discuss it? Just because it's not for one person doesn't mean it isn't for another. Just baffling, lol
@awkwardotter13
@awkwardotter13 2 жыл бұрын
@@mentallyunstable1926 thank you, I’ll look into it! Edit: I looked into it and remembered hearing/reading about it closer to when it happened but the gist is one of her books was nominated for a college reading list and some student I believe said it wasn’t really college level reading (I love Sara Dessens books and read them a lot when I was younger but I agree, not difficult reading and don’t really have any super deep messages) and Sara Dessen tweeted about it and got super defensive. Some of her fans and other authors joined in on criticizing (and basically bullied) that college student. It’s pretty nasty behavior for a YA author to be mad about not being labeled as college level.

Portrait of a Thief: wow THANK YOU. I love the premise of the book and there are some truly beautiful lines, but just a few chapters in I desperately wanted to ban all variations of the words "possible", "impossible", "change" and "dream", along with descriptions of fall. I totally agree, I found the repetition really distracting and wearying. Having so much text between lines of dialogue also slowed me down during their conversations - character B would respond and I would have to backtrack a paragraph or two to remind myself what character A had said 🙃

The thing with authors getting annoyed at what they consider "bad" reviews is annoying. Reading and writing is subjective, the book you wrote you obviously love the genre, and some readers aren't going to. That's because humans are different, shockingly. You can't get annoyed at what people think of your writing, when you are a writer. It's what we're taught in writing classes and it's just common sense. That being said, when Cindy releases her book I'm going to instantly rate it 5 stars.

there's this one ya "adventure" book that i really like that's called the midnight lie. it's about this girl who meets another girl ('-' ) in jail and they try to find magic on the island. the magic and class system is interesting, there's a nice twist at the end, but the romantic tension was thee best part.

I'm not an author, so I don't know how it feels to have a negative review about their book. But I find it cringe when an author is too obsessed w public's opinions. I'm not talking about a particular author, I'm talking in general. I've read many instances where an author fought with a reader because the reader "didn't understand the story" If I were them, if I couldn't accept criticisms, then I wouldn't read reviews

I think it's very natural for people to feel self-conscious or threatened by reviews when it's their work that they've put a lot of time into. I definitely think it requires being aware of this stuff though and drawing boundaries if you know you can't take criticism well
