Not just in the Netherlands, but the world.. along with Liv Kristine Espenæs and Kari Rueslåtten. The trio of "the first women in metal", who inspired soo many of todays big bands.

I saw them live the first time 27 years ago, since then I saw them 14 times, and she blows me away every time! And yes, she is completely self thought, writes the songs and designed her own dresses! And she is one of the sweetest Nd most beautiful women I ever met! She is a goddess amongst us!

All of these amazing Dutch women (and many other vocalists from everywhere else, male and female) within rock and metal that people are seemingly paying more and more attention to all credit Anneke for influencing them immensely and helping pave the way with The Gathering in the 90s. She is incredibly impressive and I'm very thankful that she continues to make beautiful music, be it by herself or with all of the amazing projects she partakes in - Ayreon, Gentle Storm, her collabs with Devin Townsend, features in all sorts of songs by various bands, etc.

I don't know why, but it seems that the best female metal vocalists are Dutch, including in no particular order, Floor Jansen, Anneke van Giersbergen, Sharon den Adel, Simone Simons, Charlotte Wessels & Dianne van Giersbergen (no relation to Anneke).

...and tarja though finish. Most of them actually train and took years of lessons. Many American singers just start singing and get recognized without spending money on real lessons. And I can hear it in many of them. Other is just a difference in style. Pop/hiphop vs metal/classical.

Anneke was for me the reason I got hooked on Symphonic metal. Pinkpop 96 with the Gathering. She has some great videos online, solo (Paris), with the Gathering (TG25) but also with guest appearances. She will also be a Floor coming solo concert at Afas. This song is just beautiful I've read somewhere the Best Duet Ever, well after the Phantom of the opera at Beste Zangers 🤔 not so certain...but this comes close. Sharon performed in Liefde voor muziek (belgian version of BZ) and she did some lovely sings there. Thanks for this one Tauri... ...👊

My beloved Tauri, this song was the one that pulled me to Symphonic Music. And this performance always brings me to tears. The acoustic setting, the orchestra, the contrast between black and white and in their voices... There were 3 songs that drove to this path, this was the first, Nemo from NW the second and Phantom Agony the third, back in 2005. Now NW is my 1st, Epica 2nd and WT third, although like you said and agreed the newer stuff isnt nearly as good, and Lacuna Coil and Delain right behind it, i will continue commenting in Consign to Oblivion...LOL @lost dark unforgiven soul, nightdreaners reacticide.

In my opinion, Anneke is the best female live performer in rock/metal genre. Floor is close second, she is better at symphonic metal, while Anneke is more versatile and prolific, she's doing like ten different gigs each year for the past 10-15 years, with different bands, orcestras, acoustic shows, etc. I've seen her on multiple occasions, level of control that she has and dynamic range always amazes me. She was actually admitted to the conservatory for opera training but did not like it and switched to the arts academy where she studied clothing design and management . She concluded this successfully and has the paperwork to run fashion house. She used her clothing design skills in her costume for a lot their concerts. :-) .

I can understand it. If you really do not love classical, then going through years of training would be torture. Not sure if you have to pay for it in Netherlands, as well.

@@Immortall1408 which was the reason why Floor's path took a different way. Tilburg and the Rock Academy were stone's throw away from Gool, oops Goirle, where she lived, about a 5km bike ride. After a visit from a teacher she took lessons at the conservatory to complement the operatic voice.

Anneke has always been my fav. Her vocals in The Gathering are untouchable. Real good duet and well performed too. Only in Europe can you find this kind of raw talent.

@@TauriReacts No argument here. However, I've noticed a recent decline in talent in Europe and I realized that this loss of talent is due to the rapid secularization of Europe. The farther away Europe goes from tradition European values the lessor the talent will become. All these great female vocalists of Europe were all trained in the Church. If you do some research on these singers you'll discover that I'm right. Anneke grew up in a Christian community where she learned to sing. Music and vocal theory came to us from monks in the 9th century. But if the church is attacked as it is how will people be inspired to sing? Where I live its a very liberal area and rap music is all the youth listen to. Nobody listens to metal anymore who is under 30 years old. I have met people who have never heard a human being sing before. All they hear is rap and the secular culture it brings. So I have my concerns about Europe. Now Asia is becoming more and more Christian and as a result their vocalists are getting real good. Many virtuosos in Asia. They just need to perfect their overall approach and then Asia may lead the world in music.

Well, she has been singing and making music since 1994 when she joined The Gathering, since then she was also involved in two projects Arjen A. Lucassen - Ayreon and the Gentle Storm. She founded her own band known as VUUR. Worked with Devin Townsend. And then she also worked on more mainstream music project known Agua de Annique. @@tarmotyyri6733 Nice. :=) Here you have also take into account that Anneke originates from one of the southern provinces of The Netherlands and pronounces therefore the "G" (Giersbergen) with a socalled soft tone. The same as Floor Jansen does. For me - coming from the northern parts of The Netherlands - a much nicer pronunciation than in standard Dutch where it is pronounced with a hard "G". Which, that is essential, is not the same as the English hard "G". The hard "G" in Dutch is more gutteral, whereas the English "G" is more rounded (clog ;=) . As a Dutchman I do not know if there are English words with a gutteral (hard) "G". Maybe there are? If there is, that would be your reference for pronouncing her last name in standard Dutch correctly.
