I've known Anneke's music for ages and knew she inspired Floor to take the path she's on. But in this song I actually saw some of the mannerisms Floor also has. Like the way they pop their eyes. Funny to see how influence can be seen in the little things.

She is a vocalist that just does her thing and absolutely loves doing it. Every song she does I swear she has a huge smile on her face She is considered by many to be the mother of symphonic metal

Anneke is 48 . She has a new album out it's all acoustic and I think it's awesome. You should react to her singing Travel from the 25th Anniversary of The Gathering and Strange Machines at Pink Pop . Strange Machines is what got Floor interested in Metal. I think the song you did before while Valley of the Queen's with Floor . I think you should listen to her singing Freedom with Orchestra. I like I saw a car, hurricane ,The Promise, Weary, Agape. The first three are video and the other 2 are lyric videos. She does do an acoustic song of Like a Stone by Chris Cornell and I would do Vuur with funny moments . I've seen the original video. The host sings.

When singing Anneke is always smiling. She sings this song for Roel van Velsen, who wrote this song. He song it with his father that recente died. Jan Smit was a child star singer. Every year he is one of the four toppers that give every year concerts in the Johan Cruijff soccer stadium. Every year visited by about 400.000 visitors. So he is also respected bij the guests.

Hi Tauri, I loved this reaction! You were mentioning the presenter. This is Jan Smit. He’s a singer/musician as well. Maybe that’s why he knows so many songs. This song is written by Roel van Velzen (the central artist for this episode). He grew up in a very musical family and his dad sang as well and was a big The Beatles fan. Hey played records all the time. He wrote this song because of those memories. And about Anneke, I’m a fan of her for over 15 years now. She’s not only a great singer but also a warm, social and fun person. She’s in the business for over 25 years. Being the singer in The Gathering, solo artist and project like The Gentle Storm and Vuur (fire in Dutch). She can fill concert halls a bi loud as hell with the band or do small theatre tours with just a guitar and mic. There’s still so much to discover about her for you. Keep up the good work!

Tonight in about one hour it's Belle Perez turn to sit in the spotlights. Anneke will also sing a song for her..Listen to Joe Buck on this show. I live in the Netherlands but I never heard about him. I just knew him when the show started 2 weeks ago. He is very good. Listen also to Karsu "Song for Furaha" on this show. This song has a sad story behind it.. It's about a girl in Africa who was raped by rebels when she was just 12 years old. She got pregnant by the rebels and her whole village rejected her..She had to work hard to make something of her life on her own and she did. She now has a business of her own. Roel van Velzen en Karsu are some kind of ambassadors. They visited her and heard her story. Roel wrote this song for her. He also made a deal with her that she owns a part of the song. Everytime the song brings up money she will get some of it. The one who presents the show is a dutch singer...and no he doesn't make the list they sing. They all come together before the show begin. They are getting to know eachother better. They will tell stories to eachother about something in their lives. The artist will pick up something they tell like I'm a fan or I like an very famous artist very much. They will sing song of the famous artist to the one in the spotlights or they will sing a song of the artist in the spotlights but the one who sings will do it in their own style..It's always a surprise...

We did know what Anneke could, but Bökkers, Joe Buck, Kursa & Alides Hiddink did surprise me in the positive way. Belle Perez is having a beautiful voice, but didn't give me a Wauw-feeling. Roel van Velzen can do great things, I expect still some fireworks from him in later episodes.

Ahem, I wish point out that the way over a hundred songs she wrote and performed with The Gathering, Lorrainville, The Gentle Storm and VuuR are just as much 'her own songs' as the dozens of songs she released under her own name or with Agua de Annique. She's not just a singer, but also a poetic lyricist, melodist and quite gifted guitar player. And she clearly leads on stage.

Yes, Travel! Personally I adore the lyric version, not the live version, because the sound of the band is much better in the lyric version.

Hi Tauri, I have a recommendation for you. Anneke was the lead singer of the band The Gathering at the beginning of her career. One of the songs that hit me every time I hear it is 'Travel'. It is from the album 'How to measure a planet' from 1998. There is a beautiful live performance from 2015. It was a concert for the celebration of 25 years The Gathering and a reunion of old and present members. The song is about composer Mozart who is important to Anneke. For who don't know: Anneke van Giersbergen is the formal singer for the symphonic- and progressive-metal-band The Gathering. Like Floor Jansen, her presence and play with the audience is one of her skills. Nearly every song becomes her own song. She covered a lot of songs and is often seen as guestsinger.

Nice one Tauri. You heard Anneke with The Gentle Storm performing The Storm as well. Idk what exactly you were hoping to hear from Anneke, but as you seemed to anticipate some 'rocky' approach ... I do recommend to check out The Gathering's performances live at Pinkpop or Dynamo 1996 or 1996, or at Bochum 2000 or Bizarre Festival 2000. Tracks like 'Eleanor', 'The Colorado Incident', 'Shot to Pieces' or 'Probably Built in the 50s' are most 'rocky' imo. Most influential in the goth metal scene was their 1995 landmark album 'Mandylion'. In their later albums they'd develop more towards 'trip rock'. The performances of 'Travel' and 'Waking Hour' in their TG25 concerts 2014 are considered by many as their best and most representative live and vocal performances. Enjoy annie further exploration!

Correction: 1996, 1997 and 1999. Besides, you mentioned you noticed a 'country' feel in her voice doing this Roel van Velzen song. I think she's a chameleon and can sing any style tbh. For a more country-esque sound, check what she did with Lorrainville: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJnWaauva8-eZ5o For more classical Anneke (with Arstirdir): kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJTKhp5teq5qgZY For the singer-songwriter Anneke (lyrics vid from her latest solo album): kzbin.info/www/bejne/faWcm56mmdapY5I ... and another track from that album live: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zmm5ZWaCbp2qnrc For more jazzy Anneke with TG, in their most trip rocky concert: kzbin.info/www/bejne/anfXqZt7q758opY For the rocky parts, at Dynamo 1999 (and also to showcase how Tg and Anneke never abided to the role model looks that dominated the metal genres before and after Mandylion): kzbin.info/www/bejne/raalfZKNgJqsiZY For more powerful rock sounds, at Bochum 2000: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJy4hKekqKtmfq8 For the Goth metal tracks from Mandylion TG and Anneke were most known for in the early days, which influenced people like Devin, Sharon, Tuomas and Floor: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gnjMlaOditNkhq8 For the haunting, doomy melodies and singing: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iIWsg4eLfNafgJo For the original performance that defined Anneke and TG for many followers: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3m4fqqfo7tld7M Most recommended for first reaction for both TG and Anneke: Travel (overwhelming): kzbin.info/www/bejne/j2WZfZmqlKeNrtE Waking hour (pitch perfect): kzbin.info/www/bejne/poauc4lugsSLjqc There's also a lot of very noteworthy stuff she did with Devin and Danny. Like these two: * Devin Townsend Project - Pixillate : kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZaknoVraNKCbK8 * Danny & Annie - Untouchable 2 (Anathema cover) : kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHeunoaVqZmkmc0 All worth for a first experience and reaction imo (and kinda random order I admit), covering a lot of what many aren't even aware of, and still just scratching the surface of over 25 albums and hundreds of a huge variety of gigs. Ye, I think I'm a fan. :^)

Anneke is great, in many ways.. Her voice, her stage presence, her personality and the absolute joy she spreads while performing. You can always hear her smile when she sings, she loves what she does and she radiates that joy to all of us. Like Floor, Anneke can sing pretty much anything she wants to sing, and it will be great. Hi Tauri, thanks for this reaction and for being so sincere! As for other work of Anneke, I myself was really blown away by this song from the project The Gentle Storm that she did with Arjen Anthony Lucassen (yes, him - though he does not appear in this song), called The Storm. This is from the Masters of Rock festival in 2015, and it shows Anneke's power and Marcela Bovio's too! (and it has the sound of one hand clapping, which will surprise you!) kzbin.info/www/bejne/gWbSY36Je994l80

Hi Tauri, I think Jan Smit, the presenter is a singer himself, wish he would join in sometimes :-) The Beste Zangers show format is super too, well worth watching the whole show (for the info and comments between each song) and the rest of the 2021 series! Oh, and other years too... Especially 2019, with Floor! Several Dutch singers from different genres are invited for a holiday in Ibiza, they get to know each other with picnics and walks on the beach during the day. They will be practicing a relevant song for each days centre of attention. It's not a competition, but they really inspire each other, and have a lot of fun. The duets I think was in the last episode of the series. How about the Eurovision celebration with Floor? "EuFlooria" ;-)

Oh, and for another great singer in this season of Beste Zangers, please have a look at Karsu Dönmez, a Dutch/Turkish singer who played Carnegie Hall already three times, the first time when she was seventeen. She goes wild in 'An de kant', ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKG8qq2ZmNqMfNk ) a song in dialect that she did for Hendrik Jan Bökkers (another one to watch - 'Hou van mij' is fenomenal! kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZi9i4isrJKHo6M )

Jan Smit, the host, is a fellow musician. He had very big hit, when he was only 11 years old! He a good career also on germany. He has had a long career already, while he is only 35 I believe. Also he has been a commentator on the Eurovision Song Contest for more then 10 years. While not everyone likes his music: he breathes music... Also he was one of the hosts during the ESC which was hosted by the Netherlands last year.
