My "craft closet" room is the one I struggle with keeping organized and clutter free, more than any other space in my home! I like how you separated the purging process from the reorganization. It definitely makes the whole process more manageable! Feeling inspired!

I am sure you have found places that will feel so blessed to receive your crafting supplies. How kind of you to always think of others. That just happens to be an added bonus to all your hard work, the feeling you get when you help others. Have a wonderful day Jen. You deserve it!

Thank you so much for sharing these wonderful videos. I especially appreciated this one. It helped me to understand that giving away precious sentimental belongings, some of which we have spent a lot of money on, is easier if we know we will be donating it to an organization that will appreciate it.

Sometimes I just want to quote you to my family and friends, "It's not that you don't love those hobbies, it's that they don't fit your lifestyle anymore." I never knew that someone else felt like I did. Because that is so true. Thank you! This video was great and it's wonderful that you donate!

I think its also hard to clean out crafting supplies because...how can I say this so it makes sense to humans other than myself...you kind of grieve for the projects that will never get done. Does that make sense? I mean, it's not a huge grief, but they are plans and hopes that will not be fulfilled.

I think it is wonderful that you are donating such lovely things. I found it very hard to purge my crafting supplies back in Jan.I donated all of my scrapbooking supplies,stickers,scissors,etc...It was one of the hardest things I have ever done.So many memories attached to that, but I no longer scrapbook, and it was time to move on. I hope you have a great weekend.I just adore all your videos.

Myself as well as my sister recently cleared out some paper crafting supplies we no longer were using. She found an after school program with a local church and donated a few of the boxes to. We have since received Thank You cards with the donated goodies as well as pictures with the children enjoying the products. So happy we did it and now have a box in the corner of my craft room so as I come across things I no longer want or use I just toss them in to go to their new home to be enjoyed again! Feels great to give!

Wow it must feel good to free up so much space! As a preschool teacher, it seems like our classroom could never have enough paper, felt, ribbon, yarn, paints, stamps, paper punches, etc. We even collected fake flowers for when we set up a pretend flower shop! :) So I know any preschool program would LOVE to receive those donations and make good use of them. It's so sweet of you to be so thoughtful about where your donations will be going.

Living with a paraplegic has changed me in so many ways. I have realized how much unnecessary things I have. He keeps it simple and that has changed everything for me I purged my 30 somewhat scrubs to ten. I had more scrubs then real outfits. I'm so happy now. Great video TFS.

A very inspirational and motivating video, but I should have waited until morning to watch it, because I'm all fired up to start my craft/sewing purge I want to start mine now but It's 10 p.m. and I know I'll end up staying awake most of the night, because once I start something I keep going until I'm done or forced to stop. I better wait 'til morning or I'll be grumpy pants all day tomorrow from lack of sleep. Thank you for the video!

midwestlittlesugar I'm going to be giving about 98% of my purge to my sister who is a special needs preschool teacher. She is always looking for supply donations or buying out of pocket for her classroom, because of budget cuts. I think we all know how ridiculously underfunded our schools are in this country, so if anyone else is considering donating from their purge please, please think of your local preschool program or an elementary art teacher. My sister is always begging for supplies of any kind. She even takes scraps of fabric and scrapbooking paper that I would think couldn't possibly be of any use, but she always finds a way to use every little bit up!

Enjoyed your closet revamp. I too am purging through the house in a Marie Kondo method. I have left my card room to the last. I have just downsized from a 15 room farmhouse to a 5 room bungalow. I donated to date 15 car loads of perfectly good stuff ( I mean stuffed). I've been dreading doing the carding paper. I look forward to watching your other videos. Thank you for doing this.

I was soooooo excited when I saw this posted in my subscriptions. I was in the process of my own purge. So, I recently had a career change, left my place of employment of 15 yrs in daycare and currently run an in home daycare and needed a space to organize the switch up toys and books. My basement is the only option. Our home is 1300sq " My basement houses, my laundry room, storage for holidays and daycare, and is my office/ craft/ scrapbooking. I was dreading the purge of this basement. I too have done my closet and other little purges, Konmarie, but I wasn't looking forward to the basement. I had all my crafting supplies, daycare items I have collected over the 20 yrs of work and then my scrapbook room. Once I finished the daycare part I was sooooo happy. I purged everything. It was great. I kept only what I will use now. And I purged all crafting things I was no longer interested in. BUT the biggest part was my scrapbooking. Its where a lot of my memories lie. I waited/tried 7 yrs to have my daughter and a lot of supplies were bought with the intention to scrap about her life. I did scrap her 1st yr of firsts and a few things when she was 2 and 3. But a lot of things just sat here. It took me a month, 3 tries to go through it all and I just brought 3 garbage bags full to good will. "I feel great". I got caught up in the KZbin world of scrapbooking and it seemed like people just kept buying and buying and adding the all sorts of embellishments on the layouts and was taking away from the reason on scrapbooking, to write about your memories in that picture and add a few little details. So I stopped watching and shopping and my things just sat here. I also lost the spark once my mom past away 2 yrs ago. Once I have read Marie Kondos book, I had this feeling of a more simple approach to the things I do and make and plan to scrapbook again keeping that in mind. I will tag you on IG with my after shot. TMI here Jen, sorry so long. I thank you so much for sharing all with us. And giving me an extra little push in doing things in my own home. xoxox

I think it's hard when we realize that we don't have the time and space to "do" everything. I'm a serial hobbyist, and this has really been therapeutic to watch because I struggle with letting go of the craft supplies, the crochet stock, and these time consuming things. We just recently purchased our first home and so I let go of a lot of life clutter when we moved, and I'm really trying not to fill up our house with what eventually feels like a chore list that I've created for myself. It's so much nicer to walk into my office and see some empty space. Thank you for sharing these videos. I feel motivated to keep on top of my own purging!

I have been married for 22 1/2 years and I still haven’t finished my honeymoon scrapbook 🙄 I’m about 10 years behind on all 3 of my boys albums 😰 but I just started getting back into scrapping 🤗 after recovering from back issues, and life changes with my parents moving in...there’s always something right? But scrapbooking and crafting will always be there waiting for us when we are ready again! I’m glad I found your video to help re-inspire me.

Thanks for sharing with us, because that gives us inspiration to do the same. Love your videos.

I would STRONGLY encourage you not to purge your honeymoon/wedding stuff. Yes, you have your photos, but the little bits and pieces that can go into a scrapbook will be the memories you share with your children, Don and yourself as you grow older. That little piece of napkin from that great honeymoon dinner you had may be taking up space now, but in years to come, it can rekindle a memory and lead to a sweet stroll down memory lane while sitting around the table with your family.

I've been following along on your purging series and doing it to my own home as you go. I've done my master closet (Wow what a chore, took me 3 days) and I've done my make up and travel accessories. (So much easier to pack for a trip now, having duplicates of things like makeup bag, brushes and such. Just toss it in your suitcase and I don't forget anything!) Now you've gotten me geared up on my craft/office room. I too have started traveling for the summer, but its hot here in Arizona so when I'm not traveling or in the pool with the grandkids I'm going to do some more purging. Going onto my kitchen I think... (How many mixing bowls does one woman need anyway???) Your so right about how good it feels to get it done BUT needing a little mental break in between is so needed. Thank you so much for the inspiration. I've noticed my home stays cleaner too, because there is a place for everything! Happy Trails...

Google! Look up women's shelters, homeless shelters, group homes, care homes, city youth programs, summer camps, etc. Many times on their websites they will have a list of needs or you can call. I donated my women's suits to my church's food pantry because I knew many of the women we worked with needed work or interview clothing. Have extra office supplies - donate it to teachers as many buy supplies for students and classrooms from their own pay. Hope this helps!

Michelle Scarberry I work for the National Health (nursing home) and we love donations! Local churches, schools, libraries even, will take donations almost all the time. Think about places (like my center) that rely on public funding to survive. There isn't enough funding for everything, so some things get cut in the budget.

+Michelle Scarberry if there is a YMCA near you this is a fantastic place to donate craft supplies. I run a Y school age child care program and the kids are always making crafts. We have a very small budget and quality donations are always greatly appreciated. There are also teen and senior crafting & knitting groups at the Y that are always looking for donations. Plus if a department can't use the supplies, the Y may know of a family going through hard times that may be able to use the supplies or other items.

Hi Jen, Love your videos! I just wanted to make a suggestion. Before I moved at the beginning of the year, I was a part of a church group that crocheted and knitted prayer shawls for people in the community. The shawls and lap throws were given to people who needed a little extra hug and comfort. Many of them lost a loved one and some had been diagnosed with a serious illness. The church had a team that reached out to people to pray with them and help out in anyway they could. Last year we made a total of 96 prayer shawls and lap throws for the church. Try the local churches they really love to receive crochet and knitting items. Specially yarn!!! Hugs, Kathy

PLEASE do not get rid of the cards that you and Don have given each other. I have kept every card or every flower delivery card that my husband has ever given me and we are celebrating our 18th year wedding anniversary tomorrow. It's so nice to look back on all of this stuff...... Also I completed our courtship/engagement/wedding albums but I still haven't finished our Honeymoon album....So you are not alone. I would never get rid of that stuff though, I will get to it someday. Great video Jen, can't wait to see how it all turns out!!

I used to be a Stampin' Up demo (mostly as a hobby) and I have bins upon bins of stamps, paper, punches, and inks that I haven't looked at or used in a very long time. The inclination to make scrapbooks and cards is no longer there and I now face the daunting task of going through everything and deciding what to keep (hopefully very little) and what to give away to friends or sell. You're right, it's a very sentimental journey to be taken, but if you no longer use something, it is useless clutter but may be worth something to someone else.

I have a full time job and I have been in the process of purging my craft room and it has been very difficult, in the sense that I felt guilty of letting go of supplies and paper that I had purchased. I have stuff from 1997 when I first started Scrapbooking. Yup! That right 1997. To be honest the stuff from 1997 was really easy to purge, because it was outdated. My goal is to keep it simple, clean, and organize, so I can enjoy crafting. I am hoping to wrap it up soon. My goal is to have it all done by the end of June so I can begin my crafting for the Holidays in July. 😊😊

I used to work at a retirement home. Yarn and things like that are great items to donate there. They will love it! Another thing that is great to gift to retirement homes are cards. If you have any blank Greeting Cards. Holidays, birthdays, get well and such, those will be used and greatly appreciated. Well at least where I worked they really loved them. Cards where one of the hardest things for them to get out and get, because it's such a personal thing to pick out for someone. A lot of the residents had shoppers for their needs or very limited shopping times.

The new wall colour looks great, and another impressive purge result. I'd love to see you move the wall of bins (assuming you keep what's in them) above your desk into the closet now that there's room. I think the extra lightness that would bring to the room would really lift it. I recently did a similar thing and moved our DVD collection from our living room into a closet. Still super easy to get to, but the living room feels SO much nicer without all that visual clutter.

thank so much for showing your purge on paper memorabilia!! I think you did a great job with purging and you really helped me!! I had a hard time purging this category ( I am doing the konmari method) I am still in college so I naturally have less stuff, but I safed alot of tickets, postcards and birthday cards from the last three years (basically since I moved out) and your huge collection showed me that I cannot and do not want to keep doing that. I safed the really special ones but everything else had to go. I kept them for scrapbooking which I love doing for other people (my best friend got one, my boyfriend has one and my sister) but I had alot of time the past three month and I never did it. It is just not a priority for me. Tank you for helping me clean my space out!! It feels so much more like home now :-)

Jen, As someone who has a Mom in a nursing home, please consider donating more than the yarn to a nursing home or eldercare facility. My Mom is a papercrafter, and there are NEVER supplies for her or her friends to use. Not trying to take away from a school or youth facility, but I think a lot of folks think to donate those types of items there, and don't think of the elderly. Just my two cents. . . . Have been enjoying all your videos, especially your purge ones. Also, on the subject of having some difficulty getting rid of craft supplies, I think in addition to mourning that we aren't doing a certain hobby anymore, there is also some guilt at the money we spent on things we didn't end up using. I am finding that I am so much more creative with less, which I never would have thought true, having too much makes me feel overwhelmed.
@LupieHousewife
@LupieHousewife 9 жыл бұрын
Maureen Hayes I never thought of that myself. Great suggestion. It's so true. The elderly really need activities such as crafting to keep their minds busy and less worried over things they have no control over anymore. Children will always have resources available to them but yes, so true. Jen is very nurturing and I'm sure she will consider your suggestion highly. :)

Maureen Hayes you actually convinced me to donate my whole crafting bin :-) I did divide between school and eldercare facility but just because I used to collect stickers as a kid and I can't imaging any adult decorating their crafts with glittery fish & co. Alot of my scrapbooking paper did go to a eldercare facility but here in germany scrapbooking is not really a thing. We do have photoalbums but usually they are not decorated, it's just photos and maybe a scentence or two...

I got rid of a lot of stuff in general. I just graduated university and moved from my mom's house to my aunts house a year ago so in the moving process I got rid of a lot. Then with graduating I went back through everything in the closet and got rid of some more stuff. I also am a huge book lover (I make book videos lol) and got rid of about 40 books off my shelves to make room for the books I really love instead of keeping ones that were only okay. I am not a huge crafter, I only do a couple of things, so I'm not too worried about that, but I reorganized my yarn and stuff for knitting and got rid off yarns that weren't enough for a project, and I'm making a blanket at the moment, so I have a ton of that yarn. I cleaned out the closet in my room to make everything less cluttered. I don't have a lot of space here, it's a small house, with three people living in it, so I try to keep everything I don't need in the basement closet to make it less stressful. I also decided towards the begining of the year I wanted to have less stuff which helped with getting rid of things. I've been trying to reduce my number of things in general, like I don't need several lotions or deoderants, one or two is enough. Or hair products from before I had a pixi, I gave away because I don't use them anymore. Sometime it's hard, when your favorite shampoo goes on sale I want to stock up but it takes me months to use one up, so it's kind of silly. And some of this is a long process, instead of throwing things out I'm trying to use them up and not purchase a replacement unless I need it, and I've donated a significant amount of things I have and don't need. I mean I'm young and pretty broke so it's not like the things I have a great, but even a $5 t shirt from target, will be welcomed by someone, the only thing I really spent money on was books and I'm definitely keeping more book than I need because they make me happy, but I have been working on only keeping good ones that I enjoyed, and focusing more on quality when I do buy things. It was easier than I thought it would be for me because I really realized I didn't want or need a lot of these things. Until I get my own place they're just sitting there. I gained a lot of weight when I got sick, so I only kept really sentimental clothe that hopefully I'll fit into again, but maybe not, so I got rid of quite a few things there and it's a really good feeling. Sorry for the huge freaking paragraph.

I totally understand this feeling you get getting rid of material things that were holding you to an old hobby ! I used to do a lot of drama in high school and even before, so I've collected a pretty sizable amount of drama plays in books versions. But right now, I do not have time to do drama anymore, so why keeping these ? Drama plays are not something you really just read for you pleasure, usually you have the goal to actually play them. So this is how I decided and convinced myself to get rid of about 35 drama plays books.. Kind of a little heartbreak, but it feels sooo good to let things go afterwards ! This was juste my little story haha. I'm new on your channel and I really love your simple style ! I'm French (hence the bad English haha) and this really helps me getting familiar with differents accents !

I, like most crafters, have way too much. It is much harder to part with sentimental stuff however my recent solution is to take a picture of it and then let it go. Its not taking up room space, just computer space and you still can look at it when you want to.

A lot of the problem with me getting rid of some crafting things now is I feel guilty that I spent money on them, and did not do what I hoped I would do. But I am fickle when it comes to hobbies and those change every so often in my life as to what I enjoy doing. So seeing this video helps me to see that the money spent will not be wasted because I know many places that would love those supplies. Now I can sigh with relief instead of disappointment in myself. And enjoy an extra hobby of donating my things and the fun of searching for the places. :D

I just tell myself the money is already spent and gone, and if it sits in my closet unused then it truly is wasted. I need to let someone else enjoy and love the things I donate.

when you do organise it you could consolidate the shelves to two walls, take out one side of the rolling carts so you can put all your lighting etc along one wall you so you can still walk in and access the other stored stuff.

You have such a big heart to donate those items, and knowing you, they will be in top condition! Unfortunately, my Diva Den doesn't have a closet, so the challenge is deciding between bins that are clear or tote-type storage that hides what's inside.

These purge videos are coming at such a great time! We are planning a big move in the next few weeks and I plan to purge as I pack. I already did a small house purge a few months ago, but I feel like so much more can do now that I've read Marie Kondo's book and watched your series.

I recently did the same thing. I had to empty out my craft room/office because my adult daughter moved back home. It. Was. Hard! I have a bunch of bins left of things that I am keeping, but I got rid of so much to donate. I mostly just donated to my daughter-in-law and some friends.

I feel like you might have mentioned her before, but do you watch Light by Coco? I feel like she's a great channel for minimalism but in a really realistic way. (Focusing on what is "light" for you and not necessarily just owning as few things as possibly.) But I feel like you would enjoy her videos as you're going through all your purges if you haven't watched her before. She also has a great video on her method of filing and what she makes digital and what she keeps hard copies of. Great video by the way!

Love this video and this whole series! I have very similar feelings about paper memorabilia (I too have boxes by year for mementos) and crafting supplies. I'm sure you have found great organizations to receive your donations, but just in case I would also suggest libraries. We do lots of programs for children, teens and adults in which those kinds of supplies would be so welcome! I also wanted to say that you just seem to be so in tune with yourself and your true wants and needs, and it's evident that this is making you happy! You seem to be full of joy!

WOW! WOW! WOW!!! You did really well, especially with the memorabilia. But I BEG you please don't get rid of your wedding and honeymoon things. You may want to now, but I PROMISE you a few years down the road you will wish you hadn't. I have so many craft Items I no longer use, but this is mainly because of an illness I started with 4 years ago. Its things I would still love to do if my health improved so I just cannot find it within myself to let them go. I feel if I do that I am giving up on there ever being a time I will be better. It is the first time I have seen your craft room, I wondered what it was like. It is gorgeous, I absolutely love the colour. Anyway, hope you have a good weekend and I look forward to seeing the closet when it's finished. Xx

Love your purge series. Feeling motivated! May I suggest you look into Becky Higgins "Project Life" scrapbooking system? There are traditional and digital systems and with your talent with software and design you've been incorporating into your blog and videos I bet this would be great. It's like Konmari for scrapbooking! Ease free, tidy and gets the job done! It's more minimal and isn't about products so much but more about making it easy to get your memories into a system that tells your story with less time while still documenting your life so you enjoy making more memories with family. She has videos on KZbin as well. Been a subscriber for years and enjoying your many talents! Can't wait to see where you take us next! (Love Don and Winnie, too!)

One of the most wonderful things I've found for photos and memorabilia is Becky Higgins Project Life products. You get a kit that includes beautiful card that you slide in pockets along with your photos and memorabilia. It has been a wonderful find for me and I quickly got caught up on photos when I found it! You might want to check it out . Love your organizing videos! So inspiring!

For your yarn supplies, check churches, hospitals, and yarn shops. There are groups of crafters that knit/ crochet prayer shawls and blankets and give them to people who are grieving, or are going through cancer, or other major health issues. These same groups knit pastel and light weight yarn into baby hats for newborns and premies at the hospitals. I recently sorted through my yarn stash and donated some.PS - I would love to see how you go about planning your trips.

You should look into the Becky Higgins "Project Life" system of scrapbooking to do your honeymoon and wedding books. It's way faster than traditional scrapbooking, but it's just as effective. Actually, it might be even better than traditional scrapbooking for when you have lots of memorabilia.

Hi Jen! Just a suggestion... You should add "memorabilia" or "mementos" to this video title for those of us following your KonMari- inspired purge! (Even though you're not really following it strictly, it's been helpful to see you go through the categories.) Great video!
