Hey !😊 a question for Imaan I am a boxer and a soccer player .. and I do achieve good marks . My question is how do I get a sports scholarship in the US or even an academics scholarship
@wits_physician_soc
@wits_physician_soc 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Our sincere apologies for the delayed response. With regards to obtaining a sports scholarship in the US, the requirements differ between the different sports. As Imaan’s sport was tennis, the process is quite different to what it would be for soccer or boxing, in your case. She recommends going onto the websites of the different universities you are interested in and considering applying to in the States, and looking for their respective requirements regarding sports or academic scholarships! We hope this helps!

Hi there, hope the festive season is treating the society well! Just want to know from Caitlyn specifically, I am going into my 3rd year in my BSc Biological Science degree, and I intend to major in micro and physiology. I did pretty torrid in 2nd year this year (61% average) and I calculated that I need 90% in 3rd year to get a 75% average across the two years, which is apparently more or less where I need according to some friends. Now while I trust God, I don't trust myself to exactly get a 90% in 3rd year, so I am having to consider honours as well. I just wanted to know if it would be advisable to do my honours in micro or physiology, because its starting to look like that's what I will need. Also, about the average across the two years, what is the range of averages that tend to get the job done to get into the GEMP and honours programmes respectively?
@wits_physician_soc
@wits_physician_soc Жыл бұрын
Hi Shawn, We hope you're having a great start to the new year! 1) Regarding your Honours Major: - Caitlyn advises that you should choose your major in a manner that reflects your interests & what you feel you could pursue *if* medicine didn't work out (for Caitlyn, this was clinical microbiology). You can also consider which major/field would be more beneficial in terms of career opportunities. In other words, it's all about considering what leaves the most doors open and in keeping with your interests! - Take note that your choice of major doesn't really affect your chances of getting into GEMP. For example, neither microbiology or physiology will give you a 'better chance' over the other. In the end, your marks in the program you end up completing is what will matter when you apply! 2) Regarding the Averages: - Caitlyn advises, like you mentioned in your comment, that you aim for at least 75% across your last two years of study (the two up until when you apply). In your case with an honours degree, we would therefore encourage you to achieve that minimum 75% or above average between your 3rd year of undergrad & your honours degree. - The 'range' of averages which will get you into GEMP does vary between years, reason being that one year's cohort might be higher-performing than another year which will raise the standard expected of applicants who will be accepted. We hope the above has helped answer your questions. We wish you all the best for the new academic year!

Hi Kaylin, As with Kayla's case, doing well in BHSc Biomedical Sciences at Wits meant she did not have to write the WAPT *at all* (none of the three components of Anatomy, Physiology and Molecular Medicine), correct. However, Kayla suggests that you contact the faculty directly to confirm the exact marks or standard of "good academic performance" that allows you to be exempt from writing the WAPT. You can also contact the faculty officer, Ms Lephuthing at tabea.lephuthing@wits.ac.za (+27 011-717-2029). Your application takes the average mark of your last two years of study. For example; if you did a three year BSc degree and one year honours degree; the average of your honours and final year BSc mark will be used. This does depend on the various combinations of degrees that applicants may have completed. We hope this answers your question. Good Afternoon Tenica, Once again; we are medical students ourselves and thus strongly recommend fact-checking everything with WITS and on their website (www.wits.ac.za/health/gemp/). As per this website, they do mention that students who didn't take biology, chemistry or physics at university level (as these are part of the minimum requirements) such as with a BCom degree; are able to take these three subjects as part-time courses through Wits to satisfy these requirements. It might be helpful to contact the faculty to enquire more about these requirements and how you can meet them. The faculty officer is Ms Lephuthing (tabea.lephuthing@wits.ac.za // +27 011-717-2029). @wits_physician_soc 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Lindokuhle, Kindly note that we are only students, so we do not have complete knowledge of the different degrees which are eligible for entry into GEMP. That being said; taking biology, chemistry, and physics at university level is a minimum requirement for applying to GEMP. Therefore, it depends on whether those courses are taken in BCMP. It is however our understanding that you are still able to complete these three courses part-time through WitsPlus if you did not take them in your undergraduate degree, so as to fulfil this minimum requirement. We strongly recommend that you get in touch with the faculty's contact for the GEMP program: Ms Tabea Lephuthing (tabea.lephuthing@wits.ac.za) to check! We hope we've helped. Good day, Based on the university GEMP science requirements only first year biology, physics and chemistry are required. Thus having completed those three modules in first year you have met these requirements. Once all minimum requirements are met your chances of getting in are dependent on your Academic rating (your average mark across your final two years of study) as well as passing The WAPT exam. For a more detailed outline of the GEMP pre-requisites please visit the university website: www.wits.ac.za/health/gemp/ You can also watch our follow up GEMP video should you need any further information: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKC1cp6HebGDea8si=5Nq-WQ3uyZLjUamc However, we are only students so please feel free to contact the Health Science Faculty to verify all information or to submit further queries. Good Day, Kindly bear in mind that we are only students at the university and might not be able to provide detailed information about the process. That being said; our understanding is that you need not have taken Physical Science at high school; but rather biology, chemistry & biology at university level instead. For mathematics, you could either have taken it at high school OR at university to meet the minimum requirements. This is a very short summary of the minimum requirements. We strongly recommend going to the Wits website for more extensive detail on these requirements for entry into GEMP: www.wits.ac.za/health/gemp/ You can also contact the Health Sciences Faculty to verify all information or query things you are unsure about, as they might be able to help you more. @wits_physician_soc
@wits_physician_soc Жыл бұрын
Hi Ayanda, We are not aware of a specific timeline or date for when they send out the invite. Generally speaking, the invite is usually sent out not too long after the deadline for GEMP applications close (usually in June); in other words, somewhat late in the year. Therefore, it is recommended that you start studying for the WAPT as soon as possible (you don't have to wait for the invite), *if you are certain that you have met the minimum requirements* (as stated on the Wits website's GEMP page). That way, you don't leave any preparation until the last minute. We hope this answers your question!

Hi, As fellow students ourselves, we can sympathise with the difficulty in making decisions around degree choices. However, being students oureslves also means that we are unfortunately not qualified to give that kind of advice or guidance with regards to degree choice. At the end of the day, your degree choice should ideally reflect your interests and also lead to a future career you can see yourself in, including GEMP. Getting into GEMP is an achievable feat if you put in the work and commitment during your BSc!

@@okay10101 To be honest I am not going to sit here and tell you I magically came to terms with everything and developed a burning passion for computer science. I just registered because it was my second choice anyway. My first choice was medicine. I don't really fit in with the techy techy kids or the finance kids. I always knew this. So landing in this degree made me feel like I would now have to commit to lying to myself for the next 4 years and probably more. I remember having a mega tech phase in early highschool. I had a plan and everything. I read it out of my diary and felt inspired. I also have a trains passion (addiction) so i thought of course i love tech it's just a suppressed passion of mine. But soon after I accepted that offer and wrote that comment my entire day went dark and I felt tired already all the time so I knew maybe I wasn't being completely honest, there was something weighing me down. Here's what I did: I cam to a truce with myself. I wanted to help people right? You don't always have to do medicine to help people and you don't always have to be a doctor to practice in the medical field. My original dream was centered around medical research. Computer science can give me a bridge to that in my own unique way. Of course it would require higher education than just the singular degree but I will do it because I know it was what I was put here to do. You have no idea how much I cried when I realised I picked a career in a completely different part of STEM than I expected to work in. I thought I was okay with it and that people can just do any job for the stability and find a way to be interested in it. But my heart ached. It may even be a better career than medicine in many ways but I felt as though something in my shattered. The truce I made with myself helped me feel better. I feel like I haven't given up. I feel like I'm taking an unconventional path to the same place I always wanted to be in. Which is where I can help people somehow. I took a admin volunteering gig at a public clinic and everyday I felt really hurt that all I could do was register people and not help them. After the shadowing I knew where I belonged. I get so afraid everyday that being in a tech job means I will feel how it felt to be behind that glass window for the rest of my life. I will never consult or directly help people or see literal scientific miracles first hand. That will always hurt. So choose wisely. I chose because I'm more afraid of having no choices than choosing what I actually want later. Sometimes you have to learn to be happy where you didn't think you would ever be and sometimes you need to put yourself first. This is a life challenge I am willing to face head on. Only you can decide what is best for you.

Applications to our committee open around January or February each year, and we make all announcements regarding this on our Instagram page. If you are talking more generally, this does depend on & vary greatly between different societies at different universities. One way to follow different societies, is by following them on social media (a lot of university clubs/societies have an Instagram page). Some universities also have societies/clubs listed on their websites and/or online portal (i.e., Wits Self Service). This way, you can also keep up to date with their events, committee applications and ways of subscribing to that society. We hope this has answered your question!

Hi Ayanda, Unfortunately, we are not very familiar with undergraduate degrees from private colleges such as Boston City Campus and how they qualify for consideration for entry into GEMP, as we are only students ourselves. We strongly encourage that you reach out to faculty in the new year for guidance. You can reach out to the GEMP contact person Ms Lephuthing at: tabea.lephuthing@wits.ac.za All the best for the new year!

@wits_physician_soc
@wits_physician_soc Жыл бұрын
Hi Rita, GEMP is the programme through which one completes and qualifies with an MBBCh (medicine) degree, by gaining entrance into 3rd year and completing years 3-6. Sports medicine is its own undergraduate qualification which you apply for separately (it has no relation to the GEMP programme which is strictly for medicine). We hope this answers your question!

@wits_physician_soc
@wits_physician_soc 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Thandeka, One of the minimum requirements for entry into GEMP requires 50% for a university-level biology course; of which physiology is an equivalent course (according to the Wits website). However, it is possible that biochemistry may also be accepted for fulfilment of this minimum requirement. Both physiology and biochemistry are courses covered in 2nd year MBBCh, and will also be helpful for understanding content covered in later years. However, we unfortunately cannot give definitive advice on which course to select between the two. It might be helpful to select the course which you find more interesting. However as we are only students, we strongly recommend contacting the university to ensure that either of the two will be accepted when applying to GEMP to ensure that your choice does not affect whether you meet the minimum requirements or not. The faculty contact person is Ms Lephuthing. You can email her at “tabea.lephuthing@wits.ac.za”. We hope we've helped!

Hi Celine, To be considered for entry into GEMP, you have to meet the minimum requirements which includes Physics, Chemistry and Biology at an undergraduate levels (amongst others). You can find the details here: www.wits.ac.za/health/gemp/ If you do not meet these requirements (in your case, not taking those courses during your BCom Accounting), you are able to take these courses part-time through WitsPlus, so as to meet these requirements so that you become eligible. Information about WitsPlus can be found here: www.wits.ac.za/part-time/gemp-part-time-courses/ We hope this answers your question!

Hi Cazlin, Caitlyn applied for GEMP during her third year (before the June deadline) & wrote the WAPT in that same year. She then reapplied in her honours year but as she had already passed the WAPT from the previous year (third YOS), she did not have to write it again. She then joined the GEMP program after completing her honours. We hope this answers your question!

hey guys, So i just completed my first year in bcom accounting and i wanted to get information with regards to the wits plus prerequisite part time course for the 3 components. it is recommended that the program be done over 2 years. Does this mean i need to apply for the part time programme during my second year before applying for Gemp in the third year?
@wits_physician_soc
@wits_physician_soc Жыл бұрын
Hi Lufuno, Bear in mind that none of us have completed the WitsPlus part-time courses for GEMP so we are not very familiar therewith. Based on the understanding that these part-time courses are undertaken over two years and if you apply next year, you would only be able to *start* the courses in 2024 in your 3rd year (as applications to study in 2023 closed in September of this year as per the website). But you are correct in that you would have have to apply for GEMP the year before (however, this might not be your 3rd year if you are only able to *start* the part-time courses then). However, we recommend reaching out to the contact person for the WitsPlus GEMP part-time courses in the new year to discuss the timeline for your completion of these courses alongside your BCom degree. We hope we've helped. All the best for the new year!
