Tutorial: How To Send & Receive Email Using A Custom Namecheap Domain - For Free! (Using GMail)

In this guide, we are going to learn how to make use of the free Namecheap redirect email feature to send and receive email using your custom Namecheap domain, right from Gmail. You can configure these settings using any domain registrar, but if you want to follow along with the tutorial, all you’ll need is a domain that you purchased from Namecheap. Email setup settings + troubleshooting steps (you’ll learn what to do with these settings within the video)
SMTP Server: smtp.gmail.com
Make sure you use your GMAIL username and password for the “Configure your mail to be sent through {yourdomain} SMTP servers” setting. Using any other username or password within this section will NOT work.
Run into trouble? If you get an error when trying to enter your username + password on the second step, Try these fixes:
1. Enable Less Secure Apps: myaccount.goog...
2. Click “Continue” on accounts.googl...
Then try adding the domain again in your Gmail settings.
These settings above fix the “Authentication Failed. Please check your username/password and Less Secure Apps access” and “Server returned error: “534-5.7.14” errors. If you are getting another error not outlined here or within the video, please leave a comment below with the error message you are receiving. Also make sure that you are entering your correct Gmail username and password. NOT your Namecheap username and password.

If you have 2FA enabled (which you absolutely should), then you will need to create an app password (just choose "custom app" from the options dropdown), instead of allowing access for less secure apps (which with 2FA enabled isn't an option). Then, you will have to enter the newly generated app password as your email password in that step 5:40.

**TIP FOR PEOPLE WATCHING IN 2024 OR LATER** Less secure apps no longer works. If you want to do this, enable 2-factor authentication, and look for an option "App passwords" in your Security tab. Create a new password, and use the provided key/password in the window instead of your normal Google account password. Hope this helps!

@@angelframe7183 No, I did not. I figured since it is FREE and hosted by Google, they would want to take credit for it. So, I decided to find peace with it since the main objective have been achieved. By summer, I would be switching over to paid custom email either by Google or Hostinger. I am pretty confident that the experience would be more professional.

The challenge is the email sent will go to the SPAM or promotional folder. Any way to solve this?

I went through an extensive search to figure this one out. In order to prevent mail from being sent to spam, you will need to add DKIM, SPF, and DMARC in your DNS records. This sets authentication signatures in the email headers that make it a trusted source and therefore being delivered into the recipient's inbox. The three methods serve different purposes to ensure your mail is delivered correctly, but this really is the best practice in setting up a secure mail for both you and your recipients.

But recently, I just built my website on Wix, and in order to connect my domain to Wix, I had to change the NAMESERVER(2nd row above REDIRECT EMAIL) from Namecheap BasicDNS to Custom DNS. namecheap offers free email forwarding and that's great also gmail smtp relay works well. BUT in order to avoid this workaround and have a clean separate email inbox it's far better to pay 8euro per year for email service and then put the mail address whenever you want (gmail,outlook,thunderbird) via imap,pop3,exchange ..it is easier , manageable and more professional.

Hi, I don't know if this is helpful to anyone. I did the whole process as mentioned in the video, but I still got an error. That happened because when I did the captcha part, I didn't realize that I had my other google account open, so I was doing the captcha on that account and not the one I should. In summary, if you are still having problems, one solution would be to log out of all your google accounts, and only have the google account you are working with logged in.
