baltimore comic con (maybe) 2007-8, i was talking to Adam Hughes when Walt Simonson came up randomly to say hello, and absolutely start-struck I exclaimed "Wowwww, Walt Simonson!". With incredible sweetness and cartoon silliness, he leaned in and said "Would you believe I'm really John Byrne in disguise?!"

Peter David's X-Factor was phenomenal. It remains a highlight of Marvel in the 90s. It was totally a team that shouldn't work, but he made it, proving that old adage about there are no bad characters. And tagging with Larry Stroman was genius.

I liked Ron Lim's art when I was a kid. I grew up reading comics from the 70s and 80s, so I felt like his style was a blend of the way Marvel and DC looked back then, combined with some of that early 90s flashiness. He clearly could crank out books, and I can see why he got so much work. I had a poster drawn by him of a few dozen Marvel characters. It's now on my son's wall.

Man, I was riding that whole wave with you two durinf the Ron Lim segment. I even thought, "John Buscema was a journeyman type artist" right when you mentioned him. Great stuff, seriously. Love the wrestling ranking-analogies too. It's fun to play along

Upstart was the name of Chaykin/Miller/Simonson's studio in NYC, I think Jim Starlin was there as well.

I'm all about collecting the early issues of an artist especially an artist like Frank Miller whose art looked great in the beginning and has wonderfully evolved over time. I loved Angel Medina's art at Marvel and on Spawn. Awesome episode, guys!

@@CartoonistKayfabe Don't sleep on her directorial debut, Near Dark, starring Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton, and Jenette Goldstein - basically the Aliens cast doing a vampire movie. It's worth watching just for the bar scene. Personally, I liked it much better than Lost Boys, the other vampire flick that came out around the same time.

Also, quick fun fact, Near Dark was the partial inspiration for Preacher. @@anthonyr5762

Great episode, thanks Ed and Jim! Really appreciate the breakdown of workflow for artists (like you were talking about in how quickly Ron Lim (or Lin in that ad that you guys skipped) could pencil the Silver Surfer)- never really understood that before now. One question- I was a pretty big reader of Previews until around the time Wizard came out, then I gave it up for Wizard. Could the changes they were making for '92 be related to the fact that Wizard was giving them some competition?

Walt Simonson was no longer teaching at SVA when I was a student there (2003-2007). I believe he has recently retired at that point.

i just realized the first couple times you said James Cameron, I was totally thinking KIRK Cameron. and i was picturing people begging for Kirk Cameron to star AS Spider-man. ha. he would have been 21 in 1992.. not totally unrealistic. ha.
