WORKERSANDDREAMERS What's that got to do with it? We're talking about accents, and Lahr's accent in this song is pure New York. There are many Jews in NY, but most New Yorkers are not Jewish. I always liked the music that starts at 1:47 the best. Those trumpets and everything. There's something very special about this time period in human history. A generation that went from the old world and darkness in the night into the the future of the electric age, technology, and all the prosperity it would bring and had brought by that time. A kind of celebration. A sense of defiance against the centuries that mankind spent struggling in the darkness. It's represented in the art deco and many things of this era.

+Mr. Extreme Really any music pre 1985 to me is genius. Live bands like what your are talking about are the best. If you listen to Feed the Birds from Mary Poppins it's hard to believe we humans could create such beautiful music.

+millers3888 Powerful stuff for sure! I know I wouldn't be the same person today inside if I hadn't grown up with the music and movies that I had like Marry Poppins. Prosperity. Hm. You do realize that the Great Depression was still present for many at this time in America's history, don't you? What you say smacks of chronological snobbery, the notion that we in the present have it all over them in the past because they were so stupid and ignorant. Never mind that most of humankind's greatest achievements in the areas of art, architecture, religion, science, philosophy, poetry, theater, literature, and music lie in the past and that everything we do with those things now is just variations on themes. As for Oz: "The Witch of the North seemed to think for a time, with her head bowed and her eyes upon the ground. Then she looked up and said, 'I do not know where Kansas is, for I have never heard that country mentioned before. But tell me, is it a civilized country?' "'Oh, yes,' replied Dorothy. "'Then that accounts for it. In the civilized countries I believe there are no witches left, nor wizards, nor sorceresses, nor magicians. But, you see, the Land of Oz has never been civilized, for we are cut off from all the rest of the world. Therefore we still have witches and wizards amongst us.'" -- "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," Chapter 2, "The Council with the Munchkins"

All of the men in that scene were vaudeville veterans. Buddy Ebsen - a talented dancer - was the original Tin Man, but was hospitalized after a bad reaction to the silver paint. They wanted Shirley Temple to play Dorothy, and she would have been great, but I’m so glad Judy got the part. One of the best films ever; the sound track rivals anything ever made: Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, Cabaret ... even musicals made for the stage, like Showboat, Oklahoma!, Grease, My Fair Lady, Sweet Charity and Jesus Christ Superstar. Just superb in every respect. I wish Hollywood could still make films this timeless.

an extraordinary movie, when I was a child the Television station used to show this once a year and everyone looked forward to seeing it. I only wished at the very end when Dorothy was back in her own bed that the would have scanned down to show that she was actually wearing the Ruby Slippers.Just a thought

That would have been contrived and cheap.

The Cowardly Lion is amazing and funny. 😂 He is my favorite character of this movie other than Dorothy.

Bert Lahr should have been nominated or won an Oscar for best supporting actor back then for this movie in 1939. if he had done a more incredibly amazing and very powerful outstanding and very good job in this movie, he would have won an Oscar for best supporting actor back then for this movie. i wish he had won an Oscar this amazing movie.

I think a huge part of this classic's success is due to Herbert Stothart. He orchestrated this incredible soundtrack.

Man, the "coronation" sequence (1:47 to 2:22) is done all in one continuous shot and there are SO many things which could have gone wrong.
