Seth played most of the old games he reviews when they came out. He'll reference that pretty regularly in his videos.

"How is Seth finding these games?" Easy. The newer games he reviews you learn about by following indie dev blogs. The older ones are games that a lot of people who played computer games in the late 90s and early 2000s would just remember. Seth's secret isn't some sort of underground information network. It's just being a videogame geek in his 30s.

This is correct. Every game Seth has reviewed, I have played myself when it came out and/or is actually pretty popular in the indie scene. And THIS game specifically was reviewed by Sseth around the time it was given away for free on some of the platforms and everyone was downloading and playing it.

In most cases, it's not about "finding" those games. Those games were extremely popular over 15 years ago. I've played more than half of what he covered. Wizardry 8 is a part of a trilogy, and the worst part, Wizardry 6-7-8. So he finds those games by being old enough to play them when they were still hype.

The one video I’ve been waiting for out of all Seth’s videos. It’s a great game, bought it as soon as I finished watching his video. Never regretted that decision Started with characters based on a old dnd group I played with having a psionic, fighter, rogue, cleric, a priest, and a second fighter. Seeing this world was cool but I do have to agree starting out sucked cause I didn’t know certain info. However after 30min it got better controlling it. Still playing on a second play through trying what some consider impossible builds and proving them wrong I If you ever have questions don’t be afraid to ask, I genuinely love this game

> How does Sseth finds these games? A lot of the games Sseth covers are oldschool classics. Wizardry was huge in the 90s, and is still huge today (in Japan). The newest Wizardry game came out something like three years ago and is Japanese-only.

Sir Tech also did the Jagged Alliance series, which also had a crapton of voice acting for a huge roster of hireable mercenaries (not even main characters). The face animations are virtually identical to this game, probably same actors too.

If we are going to mention MandaloreGaming on the SSeth video, you may as well watch his review of Sacrifice (3rd Person RTS Hybrid of the 2000) if you enjoy branching stories with good voice acting like Tim Curry, Jennifer Hale (FemShep), Paul Eding (Aldaris from Starcraft), and Tony Jay (Judge Frollo from Hunchback of NotreDame and The Elder God from Legacy of Kain). Or if you want a horror review, there is also Darkwood if you enjoy survival horror where everything looks like a painting in a Polish forest + open world and crafting elements.

The Wizardy series was a *very* popular series, along with ultima. Especially in the 80's and early 90's. By Wizardy 8 it had mostly been overshadowed by more immersive games and it was not considered bad, but kind of a throwback; (it was pretty nostalgic even then!). I would call Ultima underworld the first immersive game; you play you, not a party, in 3D, from first person perspective, there's simulation elements that lead to stealth gameplay, diplomacy. There's swimming, jumping, elevation difference (this is around the time of wolfenstein 3D!), bridges, a map you can take notes on, sloped floors, sloped walls, multiple ways to solve problems. It's a little bit like if Deus Ex had existed in 1992 and for the 386. It's *bizzarely* ahead of its time and led to kind of a revolution in game design. After this you had a bunch of games use first person immersive simulations. The elder scrolls (Daggerfall mainly, the first wasn't very good), Half-life, System shock and thief (same developer though, so maybe not that surprising). RPGs went mainly from playing a party to playing *you* the player. In the mid 90's the traditional first person "3D" fixed perspective RPG where you control a party just died. Immensely popular point and click games (like monkey island and Grim fandango) died. There was a lot of shooters, RTS' and racing games (vehicle based games were a quick way to make something in 3D; you didn't need to do animations really, which is still the hard part) and attempts to make big, open immersive 3D worlds in RPG games (many of which were delayed, over budget and awful series ending games, like Ultima IX; this was just very hard). A party based first person RPG in 2001 was a throwback; this was a year before Morrowind; a year after Deus ex. It was not uncommon for these games to have weird plots; especially in the 80's. A personal space shuttle in a medieval style fantasy world? Why not. Wizardy 7 felt right at home in 1992. Wizardry 8 felt like 10 year old gameplay in 2001, because it pretty much was.

I've played Wizardy 8 on and off over the years, I actually go back to it every 12 months or so if I had to guess. It was pretty impressive at the time. It's too bad they never really made a decent sequel after that. If you're looking for something more recent that doesn't require you to try and get a 20 year old game working on your PC, pick up Legend Of Grimrock 1 & 2. Nowhere near as deep, but easier to get into for newbies.

I remember playing Wizardry 8 when it first came out, when I was around 10. I had no idea what was going on or how to make a party, and I just kept wandering around the first level, getting killed by fleas. Needless to say, it got marginally better when I was older and came back to it. There were so many great RPGs around this time.

Wizardry 8 is a great game. Its all about setting up a party thats good at dominating the many, many, many creatures you'll run in to. The challenge is great, the variety of just about everything is extremely good, and the plot is pretty batshit. There's an equally good(In different ways) Wizardry game for PS2 called Tales of the Forsaken Lands, too.
