Having read the brief autobiography they made at the end of the collection of Solomon Kane books, Robert was showing an interest in the Western genre. The mere thought of what he could’ve come up with would have been insane.

Robert E Howard was a prolific writer of pulp fiction. Most of his works that were published in his lifetime appeared in magazines such as Weird Tales. He wrote epic fantasy, horror, westerns, historical fiction, contemporary adventure stories, and boxing stories. Besides Conan he created Solomon Kane, King Kull of Atlantis, Bran Mac Morn last king of the Picts, Cormac Mac Art and others.

As a fan of the books long before I saw the movie, it infuriates me how many people misunderstand why Conan is so popular. All because of a movie that is a complete bastardization of the character, although the movie itself is a lot smarter than people give it credit for.
@NathanCassidy7212 жыл бұрын
@Lord Frieza As a fan of the Peter Jackson LOTR, I don't entirely disagree with the sentiment. My first problem is the movie is they did the character dirty and made everyone think that Conan as simpleton brute who puts all his points into STR. Especially when you compare it to the character in the book who was intelligent similar to that of a survivalist and learned how to speak and read multiple languages purely out of savage pragmatism. I just found the movie extremely disappointing and mediocre despite Arnold being perfectly cast in it and after hearing Midnight's Edge talk about it, I am willing to give it another shot. And my second problem is you can tell an interesting Conan movie based on the books as the lore is very deep and Howard kept a lot of notes on the history of the world you could draw from. Since they are short stories that you can justify adding some additional plot points to help add context to the greater narrative, a good example being the comic run of Queen of the Black Coast Dark Horse did. Conan has such vast potential and it's just frustrating that modern media just cannot figure out WHY it's has stood the test of time and just churn out trend-chaser products.

You have no idea how happy you’ve made this long-time Conan fan. This video is a adaptation of the story “The Black Colossus”, which is definitely one of the classics. If you have not taken a deep dive into Conan, know this: the movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger is NOT what Conan is. An entertaining movie with deep philosophical undertones but Conan in literature is a lot smarter than that. How smart? Well, in the story “The Servants of Bit-Yakin” there is a sequence in which he translates an ancient scroll from a tomb and is able to decipher a meaning from it despite it being extinct. And he learns to do this purely on the chance it could save his life one day. Yes, he pretty literally became an amateur archeologist out of survivalist pragmatism. you can find a collection of his books everywhere that also include his personal essays on the Hyborian Age that he made as notes similar to the Silmarillion for Tolkien. The books are split up into The Coming of Conan, The Conquering Sword of Conan, and The Bloody Crown of Conan which include all the pulp stories of Conan along with essays and drafts. I also do recommend the comics of Conan, the Dark Horse run and the French comic Conan the Cimmerian are great adaptations of the work. Don’t bother with the movies, they don’t do any justice to the work.

My favorite is when Yasmela introduces Conan to her men, telling them that she's found a commander to lead her army, talking him up to the officers, pulling back the curtain and revealing Conan, hunched over the table and eating meat right off the bone like an animal. I can almost see the soldiers' faces when they realize their princess hired a barbarian to be their general.

Documentaries, I don't know. I know of the movie "The Whole Wide World", that tells the story of the life of Robert E. Howard from his then girlfriend perspective, based on the biography she wrote. There are several scenes where he talks about the character. Otherwise, he had a lot of correspondence with other pulp writers of the age like Clark Ashton Smith or H.P. Lovecraft. And there are several books compiling those letters, and in some of those he speaks in detail of the thought process behind his creation of the character.

Great video. I always wanted to see the events of "The Black Colossus" depicted on something like this. And it was a great description of the battle. But the proportions of that map used for the Hyborian Age still seem weird to me. And why Brythunia and Nemedia are now part of Aquilonia? Anyway, for suggestions for future videos, I think you should give it a try at the Second Extrasolar War, from Killzone. Is a relatively short Sci-fi conflict, but is full of story details and political drama. Also, thinking about more popular franchises that could bring out more views, you could try your hand with the Fall of Camavor and the Ruination of Helia, from League of Legends. It's only a small battle, but is full of detail.

I think that by this point in the series Aquilonia had annexed Nemedia and Brythunia. In “Beyond the Black River” the Aquilonians are fighting a war with the Picts and Conan talks about them having Nemedian auxiliaries and Brythunian archers. Ironically, the Cimmerians are no friends of Aquilonia, but in that story Conan is doing a sort of Beorn the Bear-style ‘I don’t like “X group of people” … but “Y group of people” I hate more!’ kinda thing.
@JohnnyElRed2 жыл бұрын
@@stephenfitzgerald9769 I remember reading the essay Howard did of the Hyborian Age, and remember Nemedia being pointed out as one of the few nations they never managed to conquer. And the stories always mention mercenary armies, being brought out of every Hyborian nation near. I don't think that necessarily means Nemedia and Brythunia were under their control
@stephenfitzgerald97692 жыл бұрын
@@JohnnyElRed wouldn’t surprise me if I was mistaken. I just started reading Howard’s work last year and I’m not as well acquainted with it as I am with some other settings. Though Aquilonia does become an expansionist power at some point, I believe. Correct me if I’m wrong.
@JohnnyElRed2 жыл бұрын
@@stephenfitzgerald9769 Yeah, they do conquer a lot of their neighbouring countries like Zingara, and vasalize the rest. But in the time of Conan, I think they weren't even near their zeitgeist. In fact, with the mad king Numenides on the front, they were on a period of decline at that moment.

Geralt, I think. He was not only highly trained (what could be said about Conan, too I guess), but also mutated and has his magic and potions. I mean most beasts in Concan seem to be tough and strong, but a Witcher has not just to fight the brute but also enemies who are swift as the wind. And in his long life he has fought enemies of all kind, so I think he would be able to defeat Concan - if he see a reason to do so, since Geralt was a man who fought most times what he saw as a good cause (different to that barbarian), and he was not merc for hire to kill humans.
