10:50 slight error. Aragorn’s army DIDN’T infact ignore Minas Morgul. They went straight to its gates, and challenged whatever insider there (Nazgul or otherwise) to sally out and meet them. But it was disturbingly quite and no answer nor a force came to challenge them. I believe it was also debated whether or not to retake Minas Morgul but then again it was refused, but i am not sure about this part. In the end, they decided to just demolish its bridges so no force can flank them from behind, and then went to the Black Gates

Slight error, Sam and frodo didn't turn on one another before Shelob, but rather went in her cave willingly, suspecting something was wrong and got separated after they confronted the sight of a thousand eyes in the dark. You could argue, that the war of the ring went on for many years after these events, since quite a number of the men in the east and south fought on, sometimes up to almost a generation. It is never clear said what happened to the orcs and trolls after the war, but a few bands may have survived in the deepest caves of the Misty Mountain and other places. What Morgoth and Sauron had created was not gone from the world.

I simultaneously believe that the scouring of the Shire is the most important part of the book and really the emotional core of Lord of the Rings as a story but if added to the movies it would've ruined the trilogy. It really speaks to how well PJ understood the difference between the two mediums of movies and books and what works for which. The scouring is intentionally anticlimactic and a big downer because it reflects Tolkiens own experiences of the "great" war. No matter how valiant you fight and how noble you believe your cause you will never get to return home, cause the home you left behind will not be the same that you return to, be it directly by the consequences of the war as in the scouring or just by the march of time. This works wonderful in a book format cause a book is inherently a slower paced and more personal experience that encourages reflection and introspection whilst in a visual media like a movie it would've completely taken the air out of the whole experience.
@garvinanders23552 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't have worked in the movie for reasons I think @Swedsman covered. But it works in the book showing that Hobbits and Men have "grown up" and no longer need the wizards and the elves to protect them from the forces of darkness in the world. It also showed that darkness and evil would continue to exist but even without the elder races it could be confronted and overthrown. An additional note there was to show that even the Shire wasn't untouchable by the outside world and needed to be alert for darker influences.

Cool video and I love the animation which I sadly cannot duplicate. Couple of minor points. The Army of the West was assaulted in Ithilien by a force of Orcs & Easterlings (not HAradrim) in the very place that Faramir had ambushed the Haradrim prior to the assault on Gondor. The guard left at the Cross Roads was probably no more than 300 of mostly archers. Left more as an outpost to warn if Sauron sent a force to get behind The Army of the West or to retake East Osgiliath. The men who were unmanned once they reached the end of North Ithilien and went instead to assail Cair Andros numbered between 800-1,000. Leaving Aragorn with an army of 5,800-5,500 depending on how many casualties they took in the previous assault. Aragorn had already made his dispositions before calling on the Black Gate. There were 2 Hosts that struck the Army of the West. The First Host came out of the Black Gate and from the surrounding hillsides and was made up primarily of Orcs while the 2nd Host of Easterlings came up from the shadows of the Ered Lithui beyond the further tower. One Host outnumbered them by a factor of x10 and the other Host by more than x10 (x10 +). So figure between 55,000-58,000 in one Host and anywhere from 60,000-65,000 in the other Host for a Grand total of 115,000-123,000 Orcs, Trolls, Easterlings and Haradrim).

I kind of hate in LOTR how, the second the ring is destroyed, all of Sauron's forces immediatelly flee or surrender, or are otherwise destroyed I get the idea of it But like. Gondor was asbolutely in no position to keep fighting. The Easterlings could 100% have kept fighting and took a bunch of land for themselves The Orcs makes sense, their entire reason for fighting was because Sauron bassically enslaved them to his will But the human allies, should have gone to infighting to fill the void, or redoubled their efforts to take land, now they'd be the ones fully controling it
@JustFlemishMe2 жыл бұрын
I think infighting is 100% what they did. Without Sauron uniting them, many States would no longer have a reason to go fight these better armed and often better led and organized Western powers, instead pursuing local goals. Other polities would fight everyone, Western or domestic, for security or resources. Others would focus on the West, perhaps forming coalitions or even one big coalition, but that'd be a shell of what Sauron fielded. Also, the logistics and politics would be much more complex without Sauron taking care of all that. For a historical parallel, think the Gallic Wars. Rome was NOT militarily stronger than the Gauls. But the Gauls were politically divided; even Vercingetorix never fully fixed that. The Belgae actually formed a massive coalition at one point, marched on Caesar, fought (and lost) a minor action, and then dispersed and went home. I absolutely believe the Belgae COULD have destroyed Caesar right here, BUT: 1) Logistics. Contrary to popular belief, the Gauls had sophisticated, advanced Kingdoms thanks to contact with Greeks, Carthaginians and Romans. However, they still lagged behind the 'civilised' States; the Belgae in particular were actually closer to the more traditional Britons. Keeping a massive army in the field wasn't an option. They had to attack or disperse. Obviously they should have attacked, but there are others factors. 2) Politics. Here there are two conflicting interests: casualties and glory. Glory was a good way for tribal leaders to cement their power within the tribe. However, a direct attack on the legions of Rome would cause terrible casualties. Casualties that risked leaving large tribes no longer large and small tribes at risk of extinction. So, who's going to man the front line? 3) Finally, the Belgae... won. Tribal warfare often wasn't decided in battle. It was all about showing strength. They had shown their numbers, and their willingness to fight. By their logic, that probably counted as winning. Especially since Caesar didn't attack them. Without Mordor's industrial might, how would the Easterlings and Haradrim and Variags field sufficient armies to threaten a newly revitalized Gondor? How would these tribes get along enough to cooperate effectively? How would they decide who fights in the front ranks? Would they even fight, or use their army to obtain diplomatic concessions?
@Pyro-et9vs9 ай бұрын
I just came to a realization. Could it be that Tolkien (unintentionally or intentionally) used the common theme of Dwarven ‘greed’ against the orcs of mordor, by using the mithril coat? If so, that would be incredibly poetic. How Sauron (accidentally) amplified the dwarve’s desires for riches before, via the dwarven rings, to cause the downfall of dwarven kingdom after dwarven kingdom, only for a similar sort of greed to plague his forces over a piece of dwarven making, thus allowing Frodo and Sam to slip into mordor relatively undetected, thus resulting in the defeat of Sauron, and his own kingdom?

2:43 Ok, come on K+G, you can do better than this. Esgaroth and Dale are *not* the same city - Dale is located immediately next to Erebor in the location shown, while Esgaroth and Lake-Town are located on the Long Lake much farther downstream. Also, the river on which all of this is located is *not* the River Redwater (aka the Carnen), but the River Running (aka the Celduin). The Redwater is another river entirely; it's the one forming the eastern border of the Kingdom of Dale on the previous map, flowing south from the Iron Hills and joining the River Running near Dorwinion. You do such a great job on so many aspects of your videos, so it really surprises me when you make obvious mistakes like this that 5 minutes of checking a map or looking something up would have avoided.
