I'm glad they're trying to do the book version but some movie stuff is leaking in. 1:55 There wasn't a column of women and children led to Helms Deep, Eowyn takes them to Dunharrow in the mountains. Theoden meanwhile rides out to reinforce the fords but encounters some survivors of the 2nd Battle of the Ford, who tell them that the fords have fallen. Gandalf advises them to go to the Hornburg while he rides off to rally Erkenbrand and his scattered forces. (Also not sure why the map shows the three companions and Eomer to be in different places to Theoden) 9:10 The ents didn't break Saruman's dam they actually dam the Isen themselves to redirect it into Isengard. 12:21 Erkenbrand and his men are on foot not riding in movie style Still am loving this series just not sure why they're presenting it mostly book with bits of movie

Where now the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing? Where is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing? Where is the hand on the harpstring, and the red fire glowing? Where is the spring and the harvest and the tall corn growing? They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow; The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow. Who shall gather the smoke of the dead wood burning, Or behold the flowing years from the Sea returning?

You made a mistake here Theoden did not go straight to Helms deep with his civilian population, that was strictly movie, in the book, (which is what you are mainly following here), he sent the people of Edoras (under Éowyn's leadership) to Dunharrow while he led all his fighting men to reinforce Erkenbrand in the west. However before he could reach there he learned that Saruman's forces had crossed the ford, this left him only one choice to retreat to Helms deep with what forces he had and join up with those remaining at the fort, while Gandalf rode to search for Erkenbrand and the remaining Rohirrim forces with him Another mistake you made is that Gandalf arrived with a thousand men on foot not riders and most of the men that Theoden led in his counterattack were also on foot with only a few on horse

though the battle was visually stunning, I thought they started making some poor decisions about how to adapt the books from that time on... I really hated that the elves showed up and that they made thw men of Roman wimps...

also, the poem is quoted by Aragorn when they arrive at Edoras... it is also about Eorl, not Theoden. Either do the movie version or the book, not this hybrid
@Lightingwarrior
@Lightingwarrior 2 жыл бұрын
@@jordansmith1541 First off they didn't make the men of Rohan wimps, I don't know where you got that from, in case you forgot they showed their fortitude multiple times throughout the movie, such as the warg rider skirmish, the holding of the keep, the final charge of Rohan and of course the fact that they won the battle because of their cavalry skill. Also I don't see the issue, when I went to the cinema to see it the first time I remember well people cheering the arrival of the Elves. Furthermore peter jackson clearly stated his reasons for it. Which was to show in the movie that the Elves hadn't abandoned middle-earth or mankind, that they were still fighting and doing their part, which was mentioned in the books, but couldn't be in the movie. Furthermore the Elves were also there to represent the Grey Company, who also were left out of the movie sadly. As like the Grey Company the Elves were dressed in Grey Cloaks, and had been sent by Lady Galadriel to aid Aragon and his friends in their fight against Sauron
@Lightingwarrior
@Lightingwarrior 2 жыл бұрын
@@jordansmith1541 Also I am well aware of who originally said the poem and who it is about, I simply forgot to mention that in my original comment. It's not the only time the movie did it, for example when Theoden tells Aragon "Let this be the hour that we draw swords together" right before he charges out was in fact said by Eomer right before he Aragon and Gimili snuck around the secret gate and attack the Ura Kai at the Main gate of the keep However I understand why Jackson had Theoden say the poem in the movie and the lines he quote, since it was to highlight Theoden lamenting how alone the Rohirrim stand against their enemy, which did a good job in that scene and in fairness and they did the remaining lines are sung in Old English on the score in the background of that scene as well so it wasn't left out completely. The poem wouldn't have worked the same way with Aragon saying it.

Uh, a few corrections: The civilians of Edoras were actually sent to Dunharrow during the Battle of Helms Deep. That's the opposite direction of where Helms Deep was. Theoden also left about 1000 men at Edoras to hold the city. This forced Saruman into a difficult choice. Erkenbrand was still loose in the field, while Theoden was cooped up at Helms Deep. Saruman's plan was to take control of the country and if that meant taking Edoras, he would have done so. But Theoden had 2000 men at Helms Deep, 1000 of them were cavalry. And Erkenbrand had 1000 riders, too. If Saruman besieged the capital, he'd be harassed by Theoden's raiders, and then crushed by Erkenbrand's Hammer against Edoras' Anvil. This left Saruman with no choice but to lay siege to Helms Deep. Besides, if he managed to kill Theoden, he'd be able to take control of Rohan much faster. And then his army cracked like an egg at Helms Deep. Saruman had shown poor tactical competence, as he had failed to anticipate the Ents' arrival, and not taken precautions to have his Uruks dig trenches in preparations for counterattacks from the front or the rear. His army had been impressive as a proof of concept but failed miserably due to poor leadership and foresight. This victory forced Sauron to speed up his plans and send his deadliest general into the field: The Witchking of Angmar was taking to the field yet again. And this time, there was no Man who could kill him, so victory was assured, even if the army was broken, not even Gandalf could stand up to him.

If I am not mistaken because It's been a long time since I last read the books. Gandalf could have had the Witch-king for breakfast since he is a Maiar just like Sauron. The only reason he didn't do so, is that his mission in Middle earth was to guide and counsel and not so much fight directly.

Real quick, if Erkenbrand is the awaiting hammer in Rohan with Erkenbrand himself and his mighty Rohirrim calvary roaming about, then what is the difference between Helm’s Deep and Edoras being the anvils upon which Isengard would break? Helm’s Deep being juicier with Theoden present?

@Scott-cy1ce
@Scott-cy1ce Жыл бұрын
It's actually the major reason why Saruman acts so rashly. The Black riders (on their way to Bree) encounter Grima, who spills Saruman's plans. Grishnakh is later sent by a black rider to see what the Uruks were up to in Amon Hen. The orcs would have sold out Ugluk's band of Uruks to the Nazgul and handed over the hobbits but they're killed by Eomer's band first. Saruman planned to have the ring before launching his attack on Rohan but that plan is out of the window and Theoden now knows that he is an enemy so he launches the attack prematurely to stop Theoden from gathering his full forces in one place.

The geopolitics of Tolkien’s world is deliberately built up from scratch, starting with the Journey to Erebor, then on the concluding War of the Ring between the Fellow Free Folk of Middle Earth and the Shadow of Sauron, until it is explained at last at the preceding dawn of the Ages, where the rhythm of Elu and his loyal and pretentious Maia’s among his choir of destiny, had decreed the fate of the Great Ages of the legendarily to showcase a history of struggles, heroics, villainies, and triumphs.

The Horn of Helm Hammerhand in particular in the book feels way more significant than the movie. Even though the movie has plenty of action it does really well for the Battle, when the horn is blown and Theodon and Aragorn charge the book really makes you feel how badass they are and even the Uruk-ai feel a stint of fear even though they outnumber them.

I am looking forward to this series continuing. I have to say this video is a masterpiece! If I would say one mistake you made, I do not think Gimli defeating Legolas by a single point references calling the dwarves superior to the elves. Either way, it is irrelevant because Legolas wasn't too upset. Instead, he was glad to see his friend safe. For at the end of the battle, Legolas said "My score is one less than you, but I do not grudge you. for I am glad to see you alive." Looking forward to the next one.

I think from a narrative standpoint, "the 2 Towers" movie made the best changes, gandalf seeking some random retired general is so boring but hin seeking a now banished eomer has so much more impact

I don’t like the idea of elves at Helm’s Deep. It makes no sense.
@kjsdpgijn

@@Apollo1989V I mean, it doesn't NOT make sense. The elves coming back for one last fight isn't a bad change in itself, it's just unnecessary.
@nmjjmn663
@nmjjmn663 2 жыл бұрын
@@kjsdpgijn It was a change, mainly because the appendices revealed that the elven kingdoms were also under attack at the time. They didn't have anyone to spare.

I can see why Gandalf bringing back Eomer was an interesting change. But other than that I personally think a lot of Peter Jackson's changes made the story worse.
@resileaf9501
@resileaf9501 2 жыл бұрын
Jackson wanted to have the elves have more involvement in the movies because otherwise, it looked like they did nothing whatsoever for the entire war. Even if it was stated in the books that they were fighting their own battles, not being able to see it in the movies would make them look like dicks. It was just his way of showing that the elves were also participating in the war and weren't just passive observers.

Love the videos! Long time fan of the channel and Kings and Generals. Just an FYI you should be careful with adding bright flashes at that level of intensity in your videos. At the very least you should incorporate a photosensitivity warning if u do want to leave them in. Keep up the awesome work!!

Great video! Love the Lord of the Rings and enjoyed seeing the breakdown and visualization of the battle. Another great book series to do could be “The Lost Regiment” series by William Forstchen. Has a lot of great battles between a Union Civil war regiment/Rus peasant/Roman force and the hordes of the Tugars/Merki/and Bantag.
