In my experience, no one matched Mark in his presentation of the hobo lifestyle. His broad knowledge of trains, travel, locations, geography, nature, camping, etc, all presented in the candid, funny, informative, disarming manner that typified his work kept me spellbound. For all us that fantasized about the potential freedom and adventure of this lifestyle, Mark provided something that we could share vicariously. Mark's passing has affected me with a a strong sense of loss and sadness. RIP Mark and I'd like to express my sincere condolences to his family, friends and fellow fans.

I enjoyed his video's as well. Not only was he knowledgeable about "all things rail", but he was also knowledgeable about plants, nature, weather and even the human body. I learned a great deal from him. I know this may not be of much help but I guess one way to look at this is his body was found and now we all know where he is rather than his body being out in the woods somewhere for years and possibly never knowing.

As a fellow train enthusiast and railfanner myself I feel bad if you and your family saw negative comments by other users, some people just don't think before they say anything. Your uncle had a very great personality and I enjoyed hearing all of his stories he told me and his other viewers about the railroads watching his videos. Does anyone know if his raft was found on Boone Lake? I find it hard to believe that he was out 'swimming' in his condition and with missing fingers. I don't even know if he could swim. We know that he had a raft. If he 'fell in' accidentally...the raft should still be somewhere around there to confirm that. They seem to be avoiding talking about it in the media and among the JCPD. Even police seemed to be trying to take credit for the find when it was fishermen that found Shoestring's body.

Well, as channels like adventures with purpose illustrate, anytime someone disappears in an area with lakes and rivers nearby, if you do not find them quickly on land, go looking in the water. They should have been trying that days ago. They say this was within a couple of hundred yards of where he was staying. They should have been doing sonar on that area in the first 3 days of his disappearance.

Mark was a kind and gentle soul as well as a very interesting character; however, if this turns out he took his own life I will feel just a little less respect for the man. That's not something you do to thousands of admirers of whom enjoy your videos and look up to you. It's cowardly and sets a bad example. I hope that's not what happened. It's my understanding he had just returned from an emergency room hospital visit right before he disappeared. Some say he didn't have medical insurance and may have been why he left the hospital so soon after receiving bad news. Even without insurance they will still provide medical care to someone in need. No reason to be without insurance as he had a steady good income from his videos and low income folks can always get state assisted insurance which is very reasonable. Also let's not forget train hopping is illegal.
