This was recorded during the beginning of the so called 'Farewell tour' in 2006. Ted Neeley stars once again as Jesus Christ. It has been said that Neeley had some problems with his voice on this night but he still manages to perform this incredible song with so much power that even his fellow cast and crew members couldn't keep their eyes dry. I didn't believe he was gonna do it, he is old, I assumed he was just gonna tone it down but no, what a performance to do at his age! Sometimes I'd rather hear someone sing with PASSION and hit some notes a little less than perfectly but make me BELIEVE he is that person. I watch this and am able to believe that is Jesus singing right there. Saw a tour production of Phantom of the Opera in Pittsburgh earlier this year with Chris Mann as the Phantom and he never made me believe he was the Phantom at any point. I never felt any passion in the performance. That's what makes this a great performance, not the technicality of it, but the passion and power.

Love it so much, always brings me to tears. Met him and Carl Anderson backstage in Vancouver Queen E theatre. With my wife who was awaiting a double lung transplant. Ted was so special and caring for her and Carl too. How many times has this man done that song and still he produces a performance that leaves me in sheer awe. To be honest I can't find the words to describe it - brilliant, fantastic etc etc doesn't come close to scratching the surface. There's always a debate on who does this song best but in my mind there's no doubt. Steve Balsamo can hit the notes and in fair dues he puts in a good performance but Ted still is the man!

Contrary to what many other people say about this performance. Personally, I thought this is Ted Neeley's best performance of Gethsemane (vs. Ian Gillians and others). He exquisitely depicted how Jesus agonized before His crucifixion (as he struggles with his voice); and that's amazing. It gives me goosebumps every time, especially with the rough texture of his voice. :) It's amazing that our God understands us because for once, He became a man while being a God. In this way he understands how it is to be a human.

Camilo perdió la gran voz a mediados de los 80 siempre se le veía fumando y seguramente beberia, luego ni parecía su voz en los 90, este hombre es buenísimo y se cuidó mas, me quedo con Camilo cuando podía cantar tanto en voz como interpretación

Mr. M for me Ted has more passion, in the high notes let the soul. Ian had a great voice but specifically that song needs a lot of passion.

Ted sure was beautiful in the film version. I remember seeing it when it came out in the early '70s. I was spellbound. I still watch the DVD every year on Good Friday.
