WLToys Cessna 182 RC Plane Unboxing, Build, Review, and Maiden Flight

This is an Unboxing, Build, Review, and Maiden Flight video for the WLToys Cessna 182 RC Plane. I reviewed this because of its price point and that a few of my subscribers were wondering if it was a decent alternative to the legendary Hobbyzone Champ made by Horizon Hobby.

Here are my review notes:
Pros:
- Long flight times
- Plenty of power
- The radio is very good for a ready to fly - RTF RC Plane
- Does nice loops
Cons:
- This is not a hobby grade RC Trainer Plane
- The CG is a challenge to get dialed in since the battery bay limits adjustments
The longer I have this WLtoys F949 Cessna 182 3 Channel RC Aircraft, the more I enjoy flying it.
Here are some facts about the The Cessna 182 Skylane which this RC Plane is modeled after:
The Cessna 182 Skylane is an American four-seat, single-engined light airplane, built by Cessna of Wichita, Kansas. It has the option of adding two child seats, installed in the baggage area.
Introduced in 1956, the 182 has been produced in a number of variants, including a version with retractable landing gear, and is the second most popular Cessna model, after the 172.
The Cessna 182 was introduced in 1956 as a tricycle gear variant of the 180. In 1957, the 182A variant was introduced along with the name Skylane. As production continued, later models were improved regularly with features such as a wider fuselage, swept tailfin with rear "omni-vision" window, enlarged baggage compartment, higher gross weights, landing gear changes, etc. The "restart" aircraft built after 1996 were different in many other details including a different engine, new seating design, etc.
By mid-2013 Cessna planned to introduce the next model of the 182T, the JT-A, using the 227 hp (169 kW) SMA SR305-230 diesel engine running on Jet-A with a burn rate of 11 U.S. gallons (42 L; 9.2 imp gal) per hour and cruise at 155 kn (287 km/h).[4][5] Cessna has no timeline for the JT-A and the diesel 172.[6] The normally aspirated, avgas fueled 182 went out of production in 2012, but came back in 2015.[7]

I've got this exact plane, it flies great and is easy to control, although I did manage to get it stuck in some trees a couple times though, but I was able to retrieve it. It's currently hanging from the chains of a lego tow truck in my bedroom.

I bought this so I could steal the electronics and Transmitter for a Spitfire I was building. That's when I discovered that there was a spare socket on the reciever for another servo so althought this Cessna only operates on 3 channels, the electronics and transmitter are actually 4 channel. Neat.

My first rc plane ended up in a coconut tree about 30ft up,I couldn't reach it and I gave up coming home in tears.Next morning I went to check it out,using the night before to plan out a slingshot rope mechanism to take the plane down(the plane was a XKa100).But when I arrived at the tree,the residence that lived near there had kept it for me due to how the wind aphid dislodged the plane,they kindly returned it back to me.I thanked them and till this day I think God had helped me.(This happened about 2 weeks back. I was still a beginner then.)

I have this and it's an amazing little plane. Absolutely perfect for a complete beginner, it's so easy to fly. Also, it's small and slow so you don't need a huge space, a big backyard or a park would work.

These are definitely most fun with zero wind. For hand launching and grass landings, remove the landing gear for less weight and drag and better performance.

Very good little trainer that allows entry into the hobby at a very low budget. I've paid a lot more and gotten a lot less when I was first getting into this many years ago. It's a "real" rc plane, and if you get proficient with this you will have no trouble stepping up to larger planes, in fact they will be easier to fly than this one.

I love that you mentioned the Champ. I learned on that plane, now I'm spoiled. So instead of dropping $100 on the champ, I ordered this guy for $45. Just hope it's close to the fun of the champ. Nice video by the way!

Thank you very much! For its price you can't beat it, but it isn't quite as smooth as the Champ. At half the cost, it is tough to expect that. I will say that the flight times are extremely long in comparison. The three motors up front also give it a lot of power. I haven't flown them side by side, but the power and flight times on this one are impressive. Let me know how you like it when you get it and if you have any questions. The foam is a bit different, but it works well overall.

GBLynden's RC well after having to wait 2 days for the rain to stop over Los Angeles. I got to take the maiden flight of the F949 Cessna. And no, its not the Champ. But I had a great time regardless. It's so darn fast, covered a football field in 2 seconds. Controls are a little tricky but not much. I think after one more flight it wil be like second nature. Thanks again and happy flying!

I just purchased this plane on eBay. I want this primarily for my indoor RC Club flights in a gymnasium. Of course, on calm days I'll fly it outside. I build and fly quads. I've not flown a fixed wing in years. I'm sure it will come back to me. I've owned a number of WL Toys quads. Their builds are very decent for the money...

+MrPolymers I would caution you about flying this in a gym until you get plenty of stick with it outside. I am sure it can be done, but you would have to have the rudder throws turned up very high to have any kind of control in a small space like that.

The best beginner Plane is one of Hobbyzone. E.g. the UMX Sport Cub S or the UMX Cessna 182. Also good to start with rc flying is the Sport Cub S+ 1300mm.

I can buy the whole plane for $70. Be aware of the ridiculously fragile gear. I got one of these planes for $70, but I'm not gamed to fly it yet (cos it's fast) and I have never flown RC planes at all. lol So, to slow it down, I converted mine to a cool slow-flyer (so I can learn to fly that first). My plane now has a completely new wing, it's double the wing area and tail-surface area (and hardly any more weight). It should be easier to learn. I made a "birds style" stabilizer on my plane (by adding extra foam pieces to the existing stabilizer) since I can't extend the fuselage length (it's like a Fokker tri-plane stabilizer). But I still have the original wing, and I can easily put it back on the plane, and the extra tail area is just foam added (carefully) and taped on (nicely). When I can fly the slow flyer (easily) I can easily convert back to the 182 again by replacing the wing, undercarriage and ripping off the tape on the stabilizer. I also changed the plane to conventional undercarriage (instead of tricycle) but I can easily change it back. Now it has large tundra wheels (like a cub) so it can take-off on lawn.. My plane now looks a bit like a Glassair high-wing variant (instead of a 182). lol I have no batteries for the controller yet. But the plane glides well, like it balloons very nicely. Can't wait to try it. I'll put it on YT soon. I noticed the original wing of the 182 has a bit less chord than the real 182 (in scale). With models, the wing should have slightly more chord, not less. I suppose it's a stunt plane and a 182 isn't. I'm going to add a quarter inch to the chord of mine, so it's about like a 182. Other than that' it's fairly close to a 182. The stabilizer would be just a little bit bigger, and that is essential for such a small model. Scale-effect.

For me, this birdy is an inexpensive good flying model - roundabout a good beginner !!! And it can be bind to a FlySky Radio easily for better control and range. It is the best hobby there is my friend! The strongest recommendations I can make for this plane are as follows 1) Make sure the H is showing on the display, not the L. It means you are in high rates, which are needed for good flight performance/control. 2) DO NOT charge and then store the batteries. That will destroy these sensitive lipo packs. 3) Visit my website at GBLynden.com. I have a learn to fly section there where I walk a new pilot through their maiden flight. It is pretty good, especially for the price. You may need to make some adjustments (tune it) to get it to fly perfectly, but it is amazing for what it is. It is also pretty durable too :)

Yes, it is hard to find an RC Plane easier to fly. With that being said, there is a steep learning curve with RC Flight.

I have this plane and it's easy to fly..! Lots of Fun and best of all..... It binds to my mod Devo 7 with no issues. I find that it has smoother controls.

Ive been trying to teach my step kids to fly but my smallest plane is the Eflite P47 w/AS3X and I buddy box with them. This plane looks like a much better option.

+Patrick Cooper Hi Patrick! This might be a decent low cost choice then for them. The only tricky thing about it is the CG is a bit off even with the battery all of the way forward. If you can mod that a little for better balance, it would make a great choice! It has plenty of power and long flight times due to its big battery.

I got this plane yesterday and flew it this morning it flew brilliantly than I had a pilot error and dived it into the ground and broke the propeller shaft.... Ah well I can replace the shaft and say practice makes perfect

I put a sums X5c battery in it, and put 4 led's on the bottom of the wings. I was expecting toy grade performance for the price, but I thought wrong.

It actually flies up to 30 minutes, 3 motor setup is more efficient compared to a 1 motor setup. Problem is when you crash it! You might have to replace 3 motors. :)

I have this plane, it seems like it would fly great but mine seems to have a faulty rudder servo and slightly crooked wing that both cause it to constantly bank to the left unless going at just below stall speed, it doesn’t fly well with faulty parts.

That is NOT good your plane has those issues. I will say that what you are describing under stalls speeds will happen to nearly every plane and sounds like a tip stall. I would try trimming the plane out with the trim buttons on the radio to help your plane perform the best it can at this point. In the future, I would recommend checking to make sure everything is straight and secure before assembling and flying the plane as that will void the warranty in most instances.
