WLVI 56 Ten O'Clock News Final Segment (Part 1)

This is the final segment of the last newscast produced by WLVI-TV 56 as a Tribune station. The clip includes commentary by veteran Jack Hynes and goodbyes by the on air staff, and those behind the scenes. 12/18/06

One irony (as seen in the final closing credits) was that Jack Hynes had previously been an anchor at the first WHDH - which occupied Channel 5 before then-owners the Boston Herald-Traveler lost its license in 1972.

The way WHDH handled this was so uncalled for, cold and just plain wrong on so many levels. To buy a station and then fire all the employees ONE WEEK BEFORE CHRISTMAS?? Karma is starting to bite you in the ass Ch. 7 ratings arn't that great right now and hopefully will get worse!

I agree with the commentary of Jack Hynes. He said it well. Sunbeam and Ed Ansin did not have to fire those employees. They could have just updated the newscast and keep them on board. NBC UNiversal buying WBZ would be an interesting event. Let's see what happens.

I agree with you Tom. The days of WBZ make news look great. The graphics of today can only do so much. They need to smarten up in this way.

You're right and wrong. WLVI is still active, but it's no longer in its own building. So in that aspect, WLVI is gone. It can be said for then UPN station WSBK. They had their site until merging with WBZ due to CBS and UPN(Paramount) merging. If two stations agree to merge, or are brought together in a conglomerate, that's cool. Nobody other than Ed Ansin and Tribune really agreed. Plus, they have different networks. If WLVI gave the CW to WSBK, that's one thing.

Wanna bet that in today's mega-corporate-media world, the top-management strategy in shutting this station down would be to leave it on the air one more week until Christmas, keep almost all station employees in the semi-dark about what is going on, tell the news staff in the mid-afternoon of Christmas Eve that the station is going off the air, and then starting right at that time, run nothing but pre-recorded Christmas/holiday footage until the station goes dark on late December 25....That way, there probably couldn't be any on-air badmouthing from the news personalities about the shitty situation they've been hit with....

@pats14fann01 WXNE 25 Boston ran from 1977 to 1987. It's a shame too. I will always miss WBZ/NBC. Boston TV news has gone to the dogs, but good.

The late Ed Ansin (Sunbeam Television) bought them, and they were moved to 7 Bulfinch Place.

There was a plan to buy WBZ but Group W asked them not too. They had been looking for a VHF station in Boston. They even planned on buying Channel 7 but that fell through too. This was back in the 80's

What I hate about Sunbeam and WHDH is their preemption of daytime NBC shows for useless news items that are not worthy of interrupting network programming. Ie: A minor Accident on RTE 9, the Katrina Victims arriving in Cape Cod Air base, and other useless items. I am not surprised that NBC is not happy with Sunbeam.

What I miss about local TV both here in Boston and (maybe) nationally is that you don't get the local flavor of TV that people can bring as opposed to having someone being transplanted to that city/town and not quite getting the atmosphere the people growing up has when bringing a program to a network station. MISS U WLVI,WSBK. I can't even remember what the old name for channel 25.

Comcast should buy WFXT and WPXI Pittsburgh and Cox Cable from the Cox family while Fox should buy Sunbeam instead of Comcast buying a low powered stations sharing spectrum with Telemundo 60

very well said, burbank. I hate Ed Ansin's idea of hype in news, Scott Chapin's voice scares me, and I don't care at all of Chris Crane's music. IMO, Ansin, Chapin, and Crane smell like diarrhea.

It's not just Boston...cities all over the US are losing or have lost independent stations and have seen the rise of duopolies with fewer news options and less imaginative programming options. Just as TV destroyed print journalism, the internet has destroyed local TV.

I still hate Ed Ansin. Not only is he Anti-NBC, but he hyped up WLVI's news. If I were running WBZ, I would split WBZ and WSBK, make WSBK the CBS affiliate and sell WBZ to NBC-Universal because I think NBC would like that.

I'll tell you tom, You ain't the only one that hates Sunbeam with passion. I still can't believe WHDH has to make WLVI viewers sit through Chris Crane, Ed ANsin, and SCOTT CHAPIN. All three of whom I Hate. The biggest relief Boston needs is for CBS to sell WBZ to NBC-Universal, and make WHDH NO Network at all. Complete independent. I would suppose then WSBK would be a CBS station.

Adam, I feel your pain. However, I hope WSBK and WBZ get bought by NBC one day. I've been fantasizing that it became reality. Maybe one day it will be. Though the graphics and music of 7NEWS make me jump, it hurts that LVI went through this. One thing I'll miss is Tom Evans legendary voice signing off for this station.

Oh Yeah? Well you should actually be ashamed to have WSVN for your Fox affiliate. That station constantly pre-empts regular programming. That's why I hate WSVN AND Sunbeam. I've never been to Boston in two years, but I'm willing to bet the WLVI is constantly pre-mepted too.
