wm17959 at 19:05, how do you get the marks out left from the walking foot? Great video thanks for posting
@wm179597 жыл бұрын
Thanks John. Unfortunately there's no way to get those marks out. Vegetable tan leather is easily marked, which makes it ideal for leather carving. Chromium tan leather is not a problem in this way. I don't really mind though, it gives it a bit of a rustic look. An expensive sewing machine like the Cowboy CB4500 would not have this problem, but I think the machine costs about $3000.

I have just had a look at the sewing machine you are using,do you have to use it with the plastic cord or can you use any thread
@wm179596 жыл бұрын
You can use whatever thread the needle will handle. I bought larger needles for mine but I had to do a bit of digging to find them. This machine uses standard needles as used on a consumer sewing machine, and these needles are hard to find for heavier thread like what I'm using. When I sew a seam where the underside will not be visible I use the plastic thread, but all around the outside I use a 138lb polyester thread on top and bottom. I should mention this machine does not handle thick leather very well but for something like this it works pretty good. You can't expect too much from a machine of this price range, but for hobbyist like myself it's not bad, and a lot faster then sewing by hand. Here's a link to the machine if you're interested. www.ebay.ca/itm/Leather-Sewing-Machine-Manuel-Shoe-Patcher-Singer-Adler-Repair-Cobbler-Antique/132594116949?hash=item1edf39a955:g:60wAAOSwYUBa5CxO:rk:1:pf:0

If you go on eBay and search, 'Chinese shoe patch machine' or 'hand crank sewing machine' you will likely find one. They are new but look old and are 100% steel construction. They are also called 'Able 290' but you may not find them under that name. There is a Facebook page from Australia that sells parts for these machines under that name and they can also advise if you have problems. You can get them for around $200 Canadian. I had to tweak mine a bit to get it working better for leather, but if you need advice on this just contact me. Hope this helps.

What did you apply to the outside of the wallet? And why not apply finish when all parts were separated?I am new to the field of Leather Working, but trying to learn. Thank you. Lead on.
@wm179597 жыл бұрын
I'm actually learning too. LOL. There are so many tutorial videos and it seems like everyone is doing something different. I use different techniques too depending on what I'm making. The stuff I put on in the end is just pure neatsfoot oil. Some would say that's not really the best thing to use, but it's just a plain oil that soaks in and darkens everything down a bit. I don't put it on before I assemble the parts because when I'm gluing the parts together the glue may not hold if there's oil in the leather. Also, sometimes I like to dampen the parts down a bit before sewing them so the leather is a bit softer, and if the oil in in there it won't absorb the water as well. When I put this stuff on in the end it looks a bit blotchy, but after a day or two it will creep throughout the entire project and look uniform. Hope this helps.

what's the liquid that your applying to the leather and what it is for?

Vegetable tan leather does not contain any oil so you have to add some to keep the leather supple and prevent it from cracking. The needle is a size 20, which I had to order from China (eBay) because the local sewing store doesn't carry ones that big. This machine can't handle thick leather but it will do a lot more than a normal consumer sewing machine used for fabric. Hope this helps.
@wm179597 жыл бұрын
I should mention that I modified the tip of the needles so it would handle leather better. I used a diamond sharpening stone to put a slight chisel end on it. This allows it to cut into the leather better. If you Google needles used for leather you'll see pictures of this type of needle tip.

Sorry, I don't know what 'milled' means. I buy it at Tandy Leather in Canada. It's the higher grade vegetable tan leather they sell, 1.5 - 2.5 oz. The lighter coloured leather is vegetable tanned sheepskin, also 1.5 - 2.5 oz. Hope this helps.

What kind of sawing machine you are using? Looks nice!
@wm179596 жыл бұрын
The machine is sometimes known as an Able 290, but if you go on eBay you can find them under "Chinese shoe patch sewing machine". They're made in China and have no plastic parts at all, and are not very expensive either. I had to do a bit of tweaking on mine to make sewing in leather a little easier. Hope this helps.

@wm179597 жыл бұрын
Thanks you! Actually, I added the music later. I don't know who it is, I just found a video on KZbin of Spanish guitar. The sewing machine I would suggest is called Sailrite Ultrafeed. The one I use is good for small projects but if you're going to get serious you'll want either the Sailrite or if you have a lot of money, the Cowboy 4500.

Very nice. I just don't like the marks left by the walking foot. Seems like something could be done to eliminate that?
@wm179595 жыл бұрын
Thanks Milan. Yes, those marks are a problem, but it's an inexpensive machine and there isn't much that can be done. They don't really bother me because I think it gives it a bit of a rustic look, but it would be nice if they could be avoided. I thought about filing down the teeth on the foot a little bit, but then it might not be able to transport the material, especially if that material were something other than leather, like vinyl. Expensive machines like the Cowboy CB4500 do not have this problem, but they cost over $2000.
@milanradak2695 жыл бұрын
@@wm17959 perhaps you could glue a thin piece of suede to the sole of the foot. It might have enough grip to work, and is removable if it doesn't
@wm179595 жыл бұрын

Is that a chineese sewingmachine you are using ?? Satisfied ??
@wm179596 жыл бұрын
Hi Jef. Yes, it's a Chinese machine, sometimes called the Able 290. I like the machine, but I had to do some tweaking to get it working perfectly. I modified the bobbin and also sharpened the needle to make it better for leather. It's also not a good machine for sewing thick leather, and on some projects, like this one, where you're sewing through 5 layers of leather and then through 2 layers the lower thread loops will sometimes show because you can't change string tension between the thick and thin sections.

@wm179595 жыл бұрын
Hello Krida, thank you for the compliment! The oil is just neatsfoot oil. You can use any oil recommended for leather because vegetable tan leather does not contain oil, and neatsfoot oil has been used for hundreds of years.

@wm179596 жыл бұрын
Hello. I'm not sure of the exact name because they are sold under different names. They are made in China and are 100% steel construction. You can look up 'Able 290' but you can also go to eBay and search under Chinese leather shoe patch machine. Here's a link that might help. I had to do a bit of modifying to it in order for it to work with leather. I got larger needle and shaped the tip for leather sewing. And you can not sew thick leather with it but thin leather is fine: www.ebay.ca/itm/US-Hand-Sewing-Shoe-Cobbler-Making-Leather-Repair-Professional-Manual-Machine/132672123705?hash=item1ee3dff339:g:bkcAAOSw3EVbK3Fn

what solution are you applying at the last ? and what solution you applied with the sponge?
@wm179597 жыл бұрын
With the sponge I'm only applying water. Vegetable tan leather is raw leather and should be dampened before working with it. At the end I just apply neatsfoot oil.
@krishnendhuchakra63587 жыл бұрын
wm17959 Thank you,could you give me the specification of leather to make wallet? like its thickness,type of leather.what is the purpose of applying neetsfoot oil? is it a polishing process?
@wm179597 жыл бұрын
The leather I used is vegetable tan cowhide 1.5 to 2.5 oz thick. The lighter coloured leather is vegetable tan sheepskin, also 1.5 to 2.5 oz thick. Vegetable tan leather is raw leather, meaning it has no oils added in the processing stage making it ideal for carving, so oil will have to be added later or it will become brittle and not last very long. The oil keeps it supple and pliable but don't add too much or it will feel oily and may stain clothing. There are other oils that can also be used and maybe better than neatsfoot, but I jus stick with what people have been using for hundreds of years. Hope this helps.

I bought one of these yesterday to see if I like it. It was on sale and I am certain the quality in NO WAY compares to yours. I have been carrying my wallet in my front pocket for over 10 years, started when I started working in Mexico. Traditional wallets are a bit bulky in the front and these as you can see, are designed to form fit to the front pocket. That's the theory anyway so like I said, we'll see. It recently dawned on me that my wallets have been lasting A LOT longer when carried in the front pocket. It makes sense when you think about it. I imagine you would want one to use as a base pattern? Your price seems reasonable for a hand made high quality piece of functional artwork. www.rogue-industries.com/products/classic-rogue-wallet-with-walletguard?variant=7973325633&gclid=CjwKCAiAnabTBRA6EiwAemvBdygmo7BQ-ccMKNtJipqVMkA_OLW2-HD2m1ixU0pd5IGET75nAOJswRoCSYUQAvD_BwE
@wm179597 жыл бұрын
OK I looked at that page and I've never seen a wallet like that. I certainly couldn't make it for that price and the leather I use is much heavier. The heavy leather is part of the problem because it makes the wallet bulky and it's very hard to find just the right leather for this sort of thing. I think a lot of big companies that make wallets will have the skins custom tanned for them and buy them by the truckload. And with high-volume production they are able to keep their prices low. Thanks for sharing that!
