I remember the OLD WNEW Channel 5 in New York City! Now called WNYW and under News Corp ownership, WNEW-TV was a fave station of mine, with shows like Wonderama, reruns of Lost In Space, The Flintstones, Bugs Bunny cartoons, The Brady Bunch, among others, and their news department with Bill Jorgensen (who lives these days in Florida and is still with us, bless his heart), John Roland, Linda Gialanella with the weather (a true beauty), Bill Mazer (RIP) with sports, Bill McCreary (RIP) with Black News, among others. Also WNEW had game shows like Truth Or Consequences, The Cross-Wits, Dealer's Choice, Pay Cards! and Super Pay Cards!, and other reruns such as The Andy Griffith Show, Mister Ed, I Love Lucy, Mission: Impossible, Woody Woodpecker, You Bet Your Life with Groucho Marx (RIP) and George Fenneman (RIP), McHale's Navy, plus it was the longtime New York City area home of The Merv Griffin Show (mostly on weeknights at 8:30 p.m.).

I liked WNEW before FOX took it over. These are great. I feel like I am home in New York again.Thank you for it. Amazing what you yearn for sometimes

I am watching WPIX and WWOR on Dish Network and I am 1200 miles from NYC. Got to love it. I see WPIX is trying to recover the old independent station before WB took them over. Remember the Million Dollar Movie. Sat afternoon's.

This was the update of the May 8, 1980 "Ten O'Clock News," with the edit of the opening theme as heard on sign-on and sign-off newscasts at the time. Also, anyone else besides myself miss Christopher Jones?

And in-between WNEW-TV and WFTS, among her other stints included WABC-TV, "World News This Morning," and KYW-TV.

Those were the days. I remember "Battle of the planets", Lost in space " reruns. That takes me back. I remember seeing both an Elton John & Paul McCartney & Wings concert. Don Kirshner, Mary Hartman, "Small Wonder", "Wonderama",etc. What a time to be a kid. I feel sorry for the kids today.

Several former indies that are now FOX owned were once great. WTAF/WTXF in Philly kicked ass under previous ownership, as did WFLD in Chicago.

This was also prior to Gabe Pressman's return to WNBC-TV after an eight-year absence, and not long before John Miller joined that station, as well.

I remember Jones went to El Salvador or some other war-torn country in 1980 or 1981 to cover a story. He was arrested and thrown in jail for a few days. He then got released. I remember him hosting a NJ News report show in the afternoon also on Channel 5.

I was able to specify May 8, 1980, due to the same news stories being on that night's "Action News" on WPIX, parts of which are scattered around YT. And I would agree on Stewart Klein. He's probably giving today's "American Idol"-promoting "newscasts" on his old station a thumbs-down - with his usual sardonic wit - from wherever he is today in the next world.

WNEW rocked! The old guy who was the voiceover had a scary voice to me. It gave me chills when he said "It's 10pm, do you know where your children are?" Do they still say that?
@a.b.sproductionsllc5 жыл бұрын
Yes they do! Of course now it’s no longer WNEW it’s WNYW Fox 5. It’s not as gripping as it used to be.

It was called "TV Pixx." It was torture to sit through those short segments where kids would call in to play and they'd just scream "PIX PIX PIX PIX..." lol... I was a kid at the time and it still annoyed me, lol. Good times though.

I miss the old channel 5, the Jerry Lewis telethon every Labor Day. I remember one episode in 1976, where Jerry Lewis was reunited with his estranged former partner,Dean Martin. I remember finding out one December day that John Lennon was assassinated, ironic since I saw a documentary on the Beatles in 1976.

The "Linda" he is referring to in the news update is none other than meterologist Linda Gialanella who eventually made her way down here to WFTS in Tampa but I hear she is no longer with the network....

@East180thStreetYard Your brother is much better than Harry Martin is nowadays (they should just keep Harry on 9 and have Ernie do all the Fox 5 newscasts). Taking nothing away from Harry, but today's anchors can't hold a candle to any of the past anchors in NYC.

@redonionsauce million dollar movie... bowery boys on channel 5.... remember the afternoons WPIX would have this primitive video game where to make it fire you would call in the station and if they answered your call.. you'd get a few attempts but you had to shout PIX to make the little laser on screen fire at the ships... like a knockoff of Space Invaders or Pong or something. Just imagine Jodi Applegate hosting that thing.. she'd have been a snotty teen at that point saying.."hurry up!"

The only thing that I'm glad about the changes in the anchors is that back then, they"'re weren't many lady anchors to crush on. Pat Harper looked like Pat Nixon.
