McMurtry paints a very vivid mental image. And a very accurate one.

"I bought a whiskey for the gypsy, and she turned my leather back into skin... just a fleeting sense of that rare suspense I once thought made the world go round, but now there's no one to talk to, when the lines go down." Such a perfect description of time passing and how it changes you. Maybe not for everyone, but definitely for me.

"I don't want another drink, I only want the last one again" How can someone come up with that? I could never be a song writer. And a good song should last a spell. Every song doesn't have to run 2-3 minutes. I like that this runs 5+.

+T B-SHAW this song has more meaning than I'd ever like to admit. At least in my younger days.

Yeah, that's one of those quick one-liners that seem so obvious but, in reality, are so difficult to come up with that they kind've make your jaw drop a bit. Townes and Guy were also really good at that, and IMO, McMurtry is every bit their equal.

@@Ace_Hunter_lives "I'll miss the system here. The bottom's low. And the treble's clear. But it don't pay to think to much. On things you leave behind." "I wish I was in Austin In the Chili Parlor Bar Drinking Mad Dog Margaritas And not caring where you are."

Kudos. I'm sitting here waiting for Hurricane Idalia to make landfall in a few hours. There is a life changing event on the way that can't stopped only rin from. No running here, the a few remaining souls listening to your music. Sincerely, thanks so much for sharing the comfort of your songs. In a few hours all our comforts here will be swept away in ruins. No running here. Afterall we all are just visiting here on this planet. Thanks again. Had to send this before the powerlines go down and are washed away. Kudos.

I love John Prine, Dylan, Zevon...but when I hear McMurtry I just hear Texas. He paints the state in words and music like a Renaissance Master painting Italy in oils.

If there ever was a song that could impart a sense of nostalgia about something as disastrous as a hurricane, this is it. Nothing like a good hurricane party to take the edge off an impending disaster.

With all due respect to "Choctaw Bingo" I'm increasingly inclined to be believe this is McMurtry's best song, which means it's also one of the best songs ever written. "Just a fleeting sense of that rare suspense I once thought made the world go 'round"...how the fuck do you come up with something so perfect and profound?!?!?
