The lyrical narrator says "when" not "if". Death has become certain for him. You could see the whole song as a story of a young soldier joining the army with a relatively "optimistic" outlook on the war. Only in the 3rd verse the narrator is confronted with "real" death and in the 4th he first realizes that he might die too, even tho he thinks he will probably make it. In the end he understands that his death is only a matter of time. Also see how the "we are lost" part first starts when he contemplates the possibility of his own passing.

This song was born in the heads of the common soldiers and it shows. No unnecessary bravado, no excessive lyrical heroic hyperbola. War is just mud, stench of rotting corpses and constant artillery shelling. Only the thoughts of back home and the grave you might end up at any moment. The ugly naked reality of the soldier already half-buried in the trenches as if yet undecided if still alive or already dead. Lost in the space between those two states of existence. @@kaiserwilliam1755 There are only a handful of examples of trench warfare that compare to WW1 in their horrific nature. I can imagine the Iran-Iraq war was just as horrific due to other factors like the long duration which plays an important role. What made WW1 unique is the fact that trench warfare was new and neither side had prepared for it so it turned out to be a grind fest that produced mentally scarred soldiers at rates alarmingly above any other recent wars.
@USAR88882 жыл бұрын
The closest any of us can get to understanding that is reading their first hand accounts. "Storm of Steel" by Ernst Junger is the best one I've come across so far that truly captures the horror of sustained artillery barrage. Even then, there are no words in any language to describe being under continual artillery fire for days, weeks, months. I did a tour in Iraq and experienced continual mortar/rocket fire for a 2 month period and that was pretty terrifying in and of itself, yet is like child's play compared to what WW1 was.

My great grandpa was a hauptmann (capitan) in austro-hungarian army, mountain korps, fighting in Soča (Isonzo) valley for all 12 battles. He became a capitan just because he had some education and he spoke german fluently, although he was a slovenian. My grandmother told me that when he came home he lost 3 fingers to frostbite, he never spoke about the war, he burned his uniform. I was 4 years old when he died, but i remember him whisteling this song. After his death my dad did some research about his time in the army and he found out that he and 200 other boys, all less than 20 years old, were defending a ridge from more than 800 Italians. They ran out off ammunition and started throwing rocks and boulders on Italian climbers. They got overrun and only 31 survived. He said he wasn't a hero, he said he was lucky and that he can't sleep for a single night whitout waking up. Every year he went to visit mass graves in the region and lit 2 candles, one for slovenians and one for italians. Let there be peace

The first world war was worse in my opinion. Not because of the number of people that died, because of the horror, that those who survived had to see.
@khepasomaster79533 жыл бұрын
Yes, the years after WWI were as tragic as the war itself because people were living in a constant stress and fear of the uncertain future "If this horrible war started for something so simple in a small part of the world, then another and more devastating war could also break out very easily at any point". The interwar period was indeed the darkest age of the 20th century. Imagine being a veteran of WWI and seeing how Europe is slowly descending to another world war and you cant do anything to stop that future.

Romania In Interwar Period: haha,economy go boom Now seriously,interwar period was really horrific for some people though sadly most ww1 survivors died of other medical problems coming to haunt them from the miserable trenches of the war.I am really sorry for all those that participied in the war,to return home find it in economical crisis (mostly us and uk were in crisis,though romania,my native land always thinks interwar period was best because romania won the world war and the economy was booming,while we won them from 1 day of fighting against Austria Hungary when 2 years before we fought but we lost hard,we barely had a lot combat so the amount of people in horror was minimal,the sentiment of the interwar being a great time just increased in romania as now there is no romanian ww1 veteran tell us else.All.romania did was stab the dead horse that was hungary at the time and stole an incredible amount of land.Even though all this happened history its history and i still love my homeland and think interwar period wasnt that bad for romania at least,though for everyone that suffered,Rest In Peace And Enjoy Your Stay In Heaven)
@S-Fan20063 жыл бұрын
I personally believe that the Second World War was the worst because it claimed the lives of an estimated 70-85 million people (3% of the world’s population at the time), far more than the First World War, which only claimed the lives of roughly 20-40 million people. On top of that, the many atrocities committed by the Axis Powers, such as the Holocaust and the Rape of Nanking, were pure horrible. You should also consider that the civilian population of Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania, and a small bit of Australia got caught up in the brutal cross fire. (In term of nations at the time, the Soviet Union and China’s suffered the worst number of casualties, meaning that most of the casualties were Soviet and Chinese). A problem that Russia has begun suffering from 46 years after WWII ended.

It's so...terrifying to think that these events aren't just words on paper, or images on a screen. These horrors actually occurred to people just like me, a mere century ago.

This is the most unique patriotic song I've ever heard. No bold words of false grandeur, no honeyed words to sugarcoat the battlefield. It's a sad song of loss, pain, and struggling; of being in the last place anyone wants to be facing a most certain defeat, and yet staying nonetheless to face it in an act of love for their people and their country. This is a song that deserves to be remembered.

Unlike its successor, the Great War was not a fight between good and evil, liberty and fascism. It was a fight between emperors and generals. It was a fight between opposing ideals for Europe. There was no bad side. The Central Powers were certainly the aggressors, but those on the ground did not view the Entente with contempt or hate. They simply saw them as the soldier they must shoot to kill, for the glory of their Kaiser. The Great War is such a tragic story. Millions dead for a fallen cause, in the most brutal conditions known to man. The War accomplished very little and led to the collapse of four Empires inhabited by the terrified and misguided People of Europe who wished only for security in their simple lives. Ultimately its only legacy was creating the conditions necessary for the Second World War, and caused the needless suffering and sacrifices of millions of men.
@otgdy20813 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's true what you said. WW1 was completely different from WW2. In WW1 there was no big difference concerning the imperialism and the willingness to wage war between England, Germany and France. And the Russian Tsar wanted to stabilize his rule by uniting his dissatisfied people against an external opponent. For WW1, many countries were guilty to almost the same extent. A completely nonsensical disaster that killed and maimed millions of young people before their lives even began.
@Jer20102 жыл бұрын
Like the second comment said. Not one country was single handily responsible, the Central powers were in no world the aggressors either. Russia mobilized first andGermany told them to stand down. They did then they remobilized, Germany declares war in defence. France mobilized, Germanytold them to stand down, they ignored it. Germany declared war, Serbia provoked Austria into a war too. Knowing they had Russia and France. Austria wanted a justified revenge for the killing of the Archduke, against Belgium yes that was aggressive, Britain declared war in “defence of neutral nations” but they were going to anyways.

This song conveys exactly how soldiers at war would feel. The background effects , the voice , the lyrics . All are spot on . In the end , it is only the common soldier who prays the most for war to not break out , because it is he who loses the most in war .
@flickcentergaming6802 жыл бұрын
Seriously. The voice isn't at all hopeful. It's angry, sad, and terribly grim. The lyrics are simply their view as soon as they get out of their foxhole in the morning, and their worries that they will never see the ones they love ever again. The lyrics are just haunting and beautiful.
@jodii.63 жыл бұрын
This can just prove how bad the situation at war is, the tone of the song is sung in pain, the lyrics giving goosebumps to us who live under peace's umbrella, how horrible it was to be alive at that time. War can break any man, it's hell on earth. Countless of mothers burrying their son, sometimes even underage, or even never seeing them again, which is even more depressing. Let god treat these souls of the wars with care.
