Hi thanks for sharing this true story of Wojtek, my grandfather was in the Polish Regiment that Wojtek served and fought in and spent a lot of time with him, he really was loved by all the men. All thoe his friends from army were meeting him very often in Zoo- they were crossing fences to play with him (and people who didn't knew who they are were scared- it isn't very common for people to see some man crossing fence, meeting with bear, wrestling with him and drink beer and smoke cigaretes), Wojtek was very lonely in Zoo and died in age of 20 (it is not much for a Bear- well, Smokeing Cigaretes and Drinking Beer have something to do with this, but it is mostly lonelyness what killed him... Wojtek, all thoe a Bear, is one of Polish and Europe's war Heroes and deserves to be known. Poland is such a great country, that even Bear was fighting for it :D Pozdrawiam serdecznie

Hi, I'm a teacher in the UK and currently planning for a topic about Animals, and one of the lessons I'm planning is about Wojtek. I've been scouring KZbin looking for a video to show the children that is both informative but appropriate for their age and this is by far the best I've seen. The animation is just beautiful and tells Woytek's story very nicely.

Sad,that he was given to the zoo.He was very much suffering,leaving alone behind the cold bars of the zoo after being always with people - his friends.He didn't deserve this,spending his last days in the enclosure.He died of a brokem heart, long before his time at the age of only 20,it isn't much for a bear.It makes me cry.

Syrian bears live to the afge of 20-22 in the wild, so he didn't die before his time. He was well looked after in the ZOO. It was the most progressive ZOO in Eurpe at the time. It did take him a few months to adjust to living there., but he did get used to it. He had a swimming pool and he enjoyed penguin parades and many visitors. It was the best thing that could have happened to him. He coudn't be let out into the wild in Scotland. Soldiers had to move on to other places too.

It could be worse. He could have ended up like Basia Murmańska - the First bear that was adopted by Polish soldiers. During the winter of 1920, she broke loose of her chain and ran to a nearby village, and was killed and skinned by panicked peasants. Wojtek at least lived in luxury and became a celberity in the zoo.

I read somewhere that he would regularly be visited by the soldiers he served with. They would throw cigarettes for him to smoke and would sometimes climbed down the enclosure to have a beer and wrestle with him.

I suppose your name is Tom/Thomas/Tomasz and this came from Aramaic תאומא [tɑʔwmɑʔ] meaning "twin". My name e.g. means "God is my judge", and there is even Polish equivalent "Bogusąd".

Hi, I love the video, it's really nice of you to spread this beautiful story, the animation looks great, however I'd like to share my thoughts with you: why is the narrator speaking with a Russian accent (it doesn't sound Polish at all, or maybe it wasn't suppose to imitate it)? And Wojtek doesn't mean "the smilling warrior" - it's just an abbreviation of Polish name Wojciech, just like Jim/James or Will/William, but it has no meaning in our language at all. Best regards.

+cz4rek Thank you :) I didn't have a lot of time to make this film, so I used what I had. my (russian) uncle was pretty good at narrating, so I just used his narration. It was my graduation project in the visual communication department, so the most important thing was for it to be aesthetically pleasing (and something that i'll enjoy making) like I wrote in the description, It's not necessarily accurate, It's my own interpretation and some details were changed to fit my own needs The meaning of the name is something I read in Wikipedia and it fitted well with my character of Wojtek You can read about the meaning of the name here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wojciech
