I work with law, and today I read a ruling about an odontology student who had cheated in an examination. To get a passing grade, all students had to make a dental appliance from scratch. This they had to do with a supervising professional, and on the university premises. They were NOT allowed to take their project home. This student did, and they came back with a very professional looking dental appliance that did not look like the one they had taken home. They were, of course, charged with cheating. The student's defense was that they were a victim of racism... yeah... no... I'm happy to say the evidence against them was overwhelming (among other things, pictures of the project in different stages, it did not add up at all). It was an open and shut case and they they got suspended, but that they tried that approach to free themselves from the charges says a lot about today's society. Also, the blatant disregard of the fact that these skills actually matter is scary. They are supposed to educate themselves, so that they can work with the oral health of REAL PEOPLE... The examination is there to make sure they are capable enough, and if they aren't, real people will suffer. People like that should not only be suspended, they should get barred from ever practicing the profession.

Some people use it as an excuse, but the term itself is intended in therapeutic environments to assist in the development of coping strategies that make people more able to adapt to everyday life.

I absolutely hate the trend of Mental Illness is my identity. I have ADHD for most of my life. And the problem with this illness is that it affects every aspect of your life. Seeing those people claiming that they have ADHD and making videos about that, infuriates me. It’s the same as Dylan Mulvaney pretending to be a woman. Using the ridiculous stereotypes to make themselves look like they have what they claim to have.

The next time I read a comment saying something along the lines of "as someone with x disorder" it's just getting more ironic.
@radmilaivic7 ай бұрын
@bunille yes and no. Because mental health should be destigmatised, it should not be a trend among young people. Same for trans. Conditions that are very rare, are now becoming epidemic. And people who really struggle with those are once again ashamed to talk about it because they are being considered part of a trend.
@bunille7 ай бұрын
@@radmilaivic Nobody's stopping you from talking about it when it matters, but on a YT channel or whatever where it's irrelevant and you aren't even asking for advice, it's done for the purpose of attention. I'll never mention my sex, sexuality, ethnicity, disability, etc. because if I'm not asking for advice on it specifically, it's IRRELEVANT. I can give advice without even mentioning I'm so and so. And if I were to say I'm fed up of people on tiktok and the likes listing their 100 disorders they found on the internet, I absolutely will not be a part of that ironic pact and go "as someone with x, it is overdiagnosed" without also admitting I as well may in fact be misdiagnosed due to overdiagnoses. So forth. You're just better off giving the information without the clout me-involvement. The me-involvement is irrelevant and rather useless unless you literally have a PhD in the field yourself and hundreds of PhD doctors can certify what you say. What's to say your diagnosis is legit and theirs isn't? And as for sexualities... nobody who's genuinely a kind person cares or gives a crap, so cut the filler about yourself, it's not some pedestal. Unless it's verifiable (A.K.A. "I'm gay and was in a past abusive relationship so I can understand the high domestic violence rate" (still, you don't NEED to explain you're gay to prove the point)), it's just your opinion upon your opinion upon what you think, not what IS. And with mental disorders, nobody can label themselves, so they should not bother even trying. Unless the professional who diagnosed them wrote the message that was sent out, it literally is just their opinion without any facts. That's what becomes damaging. Unironically, people talking about how so many people fake ADHD, yet the writer claims to have ADHD, may still be promoting a misdiagnosed version of ADHD. These words when taken seriously can be damaging when misdiagnoses are rather common, and this only makes it more common. Strangers on the internet aren't your best buddies. On a tangent, but not to mention that abusive and toxic disorders always have those diagnosed defending it like the disorder is so kind and caring. Manipulation is quite literally a hallmark of ASPD, for example. No, they are not innocent do-gooders. Likewise, autistic people think that they feel empathy, but the hallmark quite literally is that they don't understand facial expressions, social cues, etc. It's mistaken sympathy where they get confused that the sad emotion they feel - only AFTER being explicitly and overtly told, not shown, that they are angry/upset/etc. - is towards their own self. Their "empathy" is just them feeling sad because the person that's been sad for the last hour that they were oblivious to being sad is now overtly explaining how sad they are. All that tells us is that yes, autistics are sensitive, but they only feel sensitive to the strong reaction overtly given upon them, NOT the actual impeding sadness that a genuine empath (they are very rare and don't claim themselves as such) would notice just about straight away if not quickly, even when the person is deadpan or silent. Autistics by that definition are the polar opposite, since it's impossible for them to grasp that understanding of emotions at the deep levels. Way too many people don't even understand what makes a diagnosis in the first place, it's sorta ironic how one can claim to have it when one doesn't even know what it's about. Don't get me started on anxiety/depression where literally normal (and healthy) non-sociopathic reactions to bad situations somehow makes you mentally ill. Sorry, but it's normal to be stressed over a stressful situation, congrats for not being a sociopath. ...And I won't even bother mentioning POTS/EDS/tourettes/DID/PTSD/etc. It's just filled with a bunch of edgy and quirky attention seekers who don't know the first thing about them apart from a roleplay of what they read on the internet in a blank and empty context. You don't have EDS if you're a gymnast. You don't have PTSD if your parents didn't feed your ego 24/7. Yet, I see people who believe this way, and I'm not even trying to find this.

@@bunille I agree with all that you said. Except for the first part where you choose not to reveal your gender, and I choose to do so. As long as it goes for other stuff that you wrote, you are right. I can tell you that I started to talk about mental illness 20 years ago, because close member of my family had serious mental illness. And he was stigmatised. A lot. So I thought that maybe speaking out loud would help someone dealing with similar situation. And we are talking about times when bipolar was still called manic depression and diagnosis were not a compliment. But then, times have changed. At first I was glad to see that mental disorders are being destigmatized, but sadly soon after they became romanticised. For crying out loud, I ran into profiles of narcissist and sociopath that speak about empathy and being able to love like everyone else!! And in comments hord of people eager to reveal this "soft" part of an sociopath!! There we are sliding from awareness in collective madness. So yes, I would love that people could be more aware that mental disorders are something pretty disabling, but still with lot of work and therapy and medicine, it could be let's say handled. But nothing to be proud of, and nothing used to express your identity. Sadly I don't see that happening. So instead of being stigmatised like 20 and more years ago,today people with real disorders are expected to not have them, because if you take a glance on a social networks, it all seems OK and so easy. But have you noticed that it comes in waves? Few years ago, there were bipolar allover, then autism took the scene, then borderline. Now even narcissists and sociopaths. And ptsd and adhd are always there in the background, because you know, they are like ketchup, go well with anything!

As someone who is clinically diagnosed as having autism, ADHD, OCD, depression, schizophrenia, and so on I can not stand it when people self identify and self diagnose themselves as these things. Mental illness isn't cool, this is something I have to live with for the rest of my life. God gave me these things, for whatever reason he thought I should go through as part of my journey and my cross to carry, so I'm living my life the best I can as God intended for me. So to see people identifying as having these mental illnesses to get attention points ticks me off to no end, it's not fun having them. They make it a lot worse for all of us who genuinely have it and have to go through it, because now I legitimately worry and get scared about bringing it up because I don't want people to think I'm faking it like these jerks are doing.
@johnbolton2928 ай бұрын
Don't worry about whether some think you are faking. It's real enough. In my psychosis, or maybe in reality as they too often blur, I hope much of it is a simulation for our betterment. Just know that God loves you and remember to live others more than to speak out wildly. There's a time for everything.
@Future_Phoenix8 ай бұрын
I am facing similar things because of what this "we all have mental illnesses now and are privileged because of it" club has brought upon us. It makes everything harder. And things are hard enough as it is, living with mental illnesses. I have multiple disorders too. But as much as it's ruining my life I am aware of what it actually is behind those definitions and try my best not to let it define me and distort my view of things too much. And I sure am not expecting special treatment because of it. In the first place, one should never expect anything from anyone. It's good to raise awareness to a degree and make things more accessible in general. But beyond that we are all responsible for ourselves.
@rodiusmaximus8 ай бұрын
Yeah it seems to have gone through a cycle. Not so long ago there was a 'stigma' associated with mental illness. Then people came forward and tried to bring attention to the issue. Now everyone on TikTok is bragging about how many illnesses they have, and trying to claim victim points. Of course, the reaction to that will mean, as you've said, there's now a stigma because you don't want to be accused of being fake.
@willischwabe13248 ай бұрын
Actually a good rebuttal to set the record straight in your comment: HAVE they been OFFICIALLY DIAGNOSED with what they claim? If not, why not? Do they seek treatment? If not, why not? Because they don't want to have to deal with the downsides of whatever they claim to be / have proving them liars. If someone says, they have an illness but can't show me a diagnosis or refuse treatmen, then they have no right to cry about it, if they are okay enough with their condition and the supposed implications.
